Does side mirrors tilt down when car is in reverse?

For some reasons, both of my 2014 e350's side mirrors does not tilt down when it's in reverse. I'm taking it in this Thursday for service. Does anyone know if both side mirrors are supposed to tilt down when it's in reverse? My brothers 2014 e350's right side mirror tilts down but the left one doesn't.

Have you made sure that the mirror switch is set on one or the other mirror when you try this? If your mirror switch block is not set on either mirror, I believe that the mirrors will not tilt down. If it is set on one or the other, the mirror that it is set on will tilt.

IIRC you need to program it first so it knows what angle to go to in reverse. I think it was something like shifting into reverse, setting the mirrors angle and saving it via them M button. Dont quote me on that tho its been a while....

Nuru, I did that but it doesn't work. Like I said, my brothers car works fine but only on the right side only. Dealer said something about having to reprogram it. I'm not sure if it only work on the right side or with both.

ok, I gotta try that with my car. I have not taken the time to look at it and see if it does it. Let us know what the dealer has to do to make this happen. If it just going into the engineering menu, then we can all do it ourselves, once we know the steps. but if it requires DAS/Xentry, then it can only be done by them.

it is in the instruction manual (digital one at least) and you have to program it. It will only do the right mirror.
(this is how I got it to work on my 13 CLS)

Emericr,
You're right. Took my car into dealer today and they showed me how to program it and it only works on the right, which is stupid. It should work on both mirrors

Right one only, and Im pretty sure it is in the vehicle convenience settings because you can have the option to not have it tilt.

It's in the operator's manual under section on mirrors. All you do is push button for adjusting right mirror and leave it there. Every time you put car in reverse, passenger side mirror tilts down.
If you leave switch in the center position or on driver's door side, mirror won't tilt. I leave mine in center just to save wear and tear on the motor in the mirror. When I need it, I activate it. Think this is why MB gives you a choice of tilt down or not.

For the US, it makes sense that only the passenger mirror tilts. When backing into a space, you'll want to use the driver's side mirror to check for oncoming traffic. Having that mirror tilt down would be confusing.

They could have added a setting to have the driver's side (but not the pax side) tilt down for parking on the left side of the road, but perhaps they figured that Americans can't parallel park anyway - much less on the left side of the road.

I cannot get the mirror tilt option to appear on the speedometer. Under convenience, I get light adjustment, surround sound, etc. but no mirror tilt. What am I doing wrong??

E220
Okay just taken delivery of a new E220. I can't get the mirrors to tilt down when parking. The manual isn't very clear on this. Does tilt option only appear with memory seats?

You know I believe it does require the memory seats. On my car one has to enable the feature (Vehicle/Convenience) then set the mirror position and save it to one of the seat memories.

Hi, everyone. I am a new member. I just bought a 2014 MB E350, and I came across a couple of problems with the car, as follows:
1 - The Operation Manual stinks, has more pages waisted about warnings how not to do this and not to do that than real information. A lot of rubbish. Further, when we reach the important point, tells us very little, it send us to the Digital Operations Manual (DOM). Of course, you have to go to the car, switch ignition on, waist a lot of battery charge reading the DOM, and on the end, you might not get an answer.
2 - This is the case of TILTING THE OUTSIDE MIRRORS WHEN WE PUT THE GEAR IN REVERSE. This is a very usefull feature when we try to park the car on the street and other places.
The DOM is mute as far as this in the chapter referent to the "External Mirrors". There is information, but not about tilting.
Well, I got the solution for all of the 2014 MB E350 owners.
It is as follows:
1 - Start the car.
2 - Engage gear in reverse.
3 - On the driver door, press the right mirror switch.
4 - Press the lower arrow of the mirrors control. The right mirror will tilt till the point that you are satisfied.
5 - Now, and lastely, PRESS MEMORY BOTTOM ONCE on the driver side door. Do NOT press bottoms 1, 2, or 3 on that Memory control.
6 - Et Voilá, the problem is solved. As soon as you roll the car forward, the mirror wil go back to its normal position... and tilts every time that you engage the reverse.
Too bad that does not work for the left side. MB thinks that nobody in the US parks the car on the left...My old 2005 Acura RL had that feature.

sagres1: Thank you for providing concise instructions on how to tilt side mirrors. I agree the manuals provided are confusing. I was trying to program the garage door opener, and instructions were saying to press buttons number so and so. I checked instructions for 2013 and they were clearer.

Thank you jdhoang. These manuals apparently are writen just to make lawyers happy. They are not for commun sense purposes, and they end up informing very little.
All of us should be gratfull for those that are dedicated to the point of clarifying and informing others. I always learn a lot in these Forums.
I hope that others will profit from my nformation about how to solve the problem of tilting the outside mirrors when engaging the reverse gear. My new car, a 2014 MB E350 Sports Sedan, should have both sides doing the tilting, not just the right side.
Once more, thank you very much.

Thanks for posting the info, took me a while to figure it out too.

Should we all get together and public books "A Dummies Guide to 2013..2014...2015 Mercedes-Benz"? really go to a point where you need a summary of the important parts of the manual!

Hi, Mbenz260e:
Thanks for your message. What we really need is the written Owners Operation Manual just with the juice and leave the one with all the lawyers warnings for the Digital Operation Manual. That, in my opinion, would be great.
Why don't we all send the message to MB?
In alternative, you idea is not bad at all...

I think if your vehicle has memory seats the mirror tilt feature is pre-activated in the factory and all you need is to press the passenger side button on the rear mirror adjust and leave it there and it'll automatically dip down when the reverse gear is activated.

In face my previous 2010 BMW 335D and 2011 ML250BT also had memory seats and the rear mirror auto dips but only on the passenger side.

Dear DC-IT:
Yes, my car does have memory seats and the right side mirror was not tilting when I was engaging the reverse gear. Looking trough the Forum about this subject, I was not the only one with this problem.
May be it was standard having the 2013 MB programmed from the factory about this subject. Or somebody did it before you in case you bought your car used.
My best wishes.

Yesterday noticed that when reversing the right side mirror tilts down as I have programmed it to do but when I reversed fast about 7 mph the mirror moved up again, then when I slowed down below 7 mph it tilted down again. They seem to try think about everything...

Hi, Arrie:
You are right, they think a lot, but why some have BOTH outside mirrors tilting pending which one you choose and program like in Europe, and we Americans can not, beats me. Or why Canadians have electric automatic outside mirrors folding as a option and we don't. May be is too complicated for Americans...
Specifically answering to your thread, I never reversed my car at or above 7 mph, but I think that the reason why your mirror goes back to the normal position is the same reason why one can not park the car using the Parktronic if the speed of parking is greater than 6 mph. It defeats the purpose of parking going too fast and the reason why the mirror tilts down...
My best regards.

My best regards.

You are asking me questions I don't have answers for or don't understand either why they do different things especially between U.S. and Canada.

Mirror going back to normal position when reversing fast I think is to provide a view to distance as with faster speed you need to be looking further away.

Why only passenger side tilts? I have never seen a car that has both sides mirrors tilting. This does not mean they do not exist and I'm sure they do but I also don't see any use for the driver's side mirror to tilt on reverse. Perhaps this is connected to the mirror glass as in Europe and pretty much rest of the world except U.S. and Canada has a convex mirror on both sides. Here we have a flat glass on the driver's side, which shows a lot bigger image on it. Don't know if this is the reason of having tilt only on the passenger "convex" side but it could be.

The lack of folding mirrors I don't get like so many others don't. It is a nice feature and I think it was developed especially for very tight parking garages. In European cities parking garages are very small. When the car is inside the lines of the spot you can barely get out of it. I have been in garages where you have to fold the mirror to be able to maneuver in the spot.

A german engineer may be thinking we don't have this problem here in the U.S., which probably is correct for most of us but I'm sure there are some MB drivers who park in tight spots. For MB to do automatically folding mirrors for a select few may be just something they desided not to have.

Canada in many ways, especially Quebec, is concidered a very European so perhaps they think they have the same issues as Europe. And they very well could.

It is also that the cars we enjoy cost just a little bit more than half of what folks in Europe pay for these same cars. They need to be saving somewhere don't you think?
