what the dealer offered

As some of you know I am selling my 550; the dealer offered 30 towards trade in: I was not excited about it but I am leaning towards the trade.
Car has 43K miles.....

Any thoughts? Thanx in advance

Take it to carmax, it's a free evaluation and they typically only list cars for $2k-$4k over what they buy them for, so you might get a bit more then a typical dealer.

Mbenz260e 03-12-2014 12:28 PM

I don't have much knowledge on the 550s but seems a bit low to me. Maybe worth the hassle of advertising it online as the 550s are a rare vehicle and you could do well from the right buyer?

Are you trading it against an S Hype?

KEY08 03-12-2014 12:41 PM

Not sure how the taxes work in your state, but there is also the tax advantages of a trade. Selling any high end car privately is always a test. I have had my share of this aggravation over the years of getting beat up by buyers and low balled. Plus, most buyers don't have the cash and are looking to finance, which is another hassle. See if you can squeak another couple grand out of the dealer and trade it. Then you are done and can move on.

other guys will chime in with the auction values and give you a good estimate, but i'd say def get another offer from either another dealership or from carmax. the dealer would probably list it for closer to $40k after CPO so i think their margin is a bit high on you.

try to counter with $35k and see if they will come up a bit.

I did try to counter and they stood firm at 30

I will always try to squeeze them for more! yes! and yes, I will be saving over 2800 on taxes for trading my 550 and my 911 TT, so there is that

thanx for the replies Gents

Apparently, you know Kate.

See if Ms. Upton will give you more $?

JoelE55 03-12-2014 03:57 PM

Carmax would be best option, they probably gives you more than dealers do.

Yeah, a couple of months ago the dealer in Arlington, VA where I bought this E550 from two years ago sent me a letter stating that they would give up to $28000 for my car trading it to a 2014 model.

I take this as an insult.

I'm seriously thinking to keep this car for very long time, like to the point of rebuilding the engine and tranny. In the end of it this is more cost smart than trading to a new model as I would have to spend like $40 000 and up between the cars if I want the same options.

Yes, I would not have the latest Comand features like the internet but while I drive I don't need them and I don't spend any time in my car other than drive it.

drsaab 03-12-2014 07:10 PM

Yeah I let him know. 31000 is the auction rate. He should be around there.

Dealer doesn't have to pay auction fees so they should do that number if they need the car.

I am about to trade for a 2014 E. I believe my car is pretty much the same as Hype's car but he has a few more options like Nightview etc.
We will see what they offer, mine only has 25k miles though.

stale-bread 03-13-2014 12:09 AM

Hype, you are one of the most knowledegable posters on this board. I'm assuming deep down you knew your vehicle's worth and was not too surprised by the offer. I wish it was higher as well, considering the original price point. I'm planning on keep mine long-term.
Arrie, great ideas for long term ownership!

for a 2WD with those miles, prob 33-34 range.

For some reason, there is a shortage of 2012 E550 in the auctions, last one sold was 12/2013 and all the late 2013 sales were in the 48-49k range.

Never seen such a difference in 1 model year without a new body style.

many thanx for the replies Gents........
I would keep the car but: my wife does not want it, and I have a new S class coming any day, don't really want to sit on the car any longer......
it's been a great car and I'll be sad to see it go

Yeah right...sad...

When you get the new S you will smile your ears open and certainly will not feel sad...

I was hoping you keep the E so you will stay in this forum...

Tjdehya 03-13-2014 03:33 PM

Well I did some shopping around.
First offer from a MB dealership was $31k (I told them to suck it)
2nd offer from a BMW dealership $32k (I politely told them to suck it, because I now had doubts about the value of my car)
1st MB dealership called back with an increased offer of $34.5k
Then I got an offer from another MB dealer of $38k... (I said you guys have a deal.)

drsaab 03-13-2014 03:57 PM

I now see you have a W4, that would make my estimate 35-36, vs the 2wd Numbers posted above.

$38? WTF... great job

They must have a buyer ready.

hyperion667 03-13-2014 04:09 PM

sounds like you did well TJ, are you getting new Benz?

hyperion667 03-13-2014 06:41 PM

I'll remind everyone the grill is black, the OEM wheels are black, it's debadged and the chrome strip on the door was removed AND the window trim blacked out; they also know I had some paintwork done-not that I tried to omit that info......
but I think they are considering these other factors.....true it's loaded except for drivers assistance package.......but it does have almost 44K miles on it too

alanme123 03-13-2014 07:04 PM

38k very good price.. congrats and enjoy the new S. I will be very jealous :(

2006_C350 03-14-2014 02:03 AM

I've always got low balled at carmax and always got a better deal on trade in regardless of whether I buy the car from the dealer or not.

Maybe carmax has red flag next to my name for low balling purposes.
