Changing Steering Wheel

Hi guys,

I live in Indonesia. I have 2012 Mercedes E250 sedan.
I plan to change my steering wheel to the 3 spoke AMG sport steering wheel (picture attached). I have compared which steering wheel parts are different between my car & my friend's car which already use this steering wheel as stock part from our vin's number. Our car have a same year production but different month only. From my research. i found only 3 items difference: steering wheel, airbag, & RS wiring harness (i don't know what it is).

My doubt came out when i searched for steering wheel & airbag from ebay, one of seller told me that i have to change steering wheel contact plate also in order to make steering wheel buttons, horn, & light work. They said because now produced steering wheel has new contact plate which compatible only with facelift steering column (part that consist of gearshift, cruise control lever) so i have to change contact plate to the old one to install on old steering column. Another problem is we can order contact plate separately since it built in steering wheel. I have asked MB dealer for it and they can't find contact plate part number in their EPC.

Actually, i don't understand this statement because my friend's car has steering column same like me but use 3 spoke AMG sport steering wheel as a stock.
The steering wheel that i wanted has same part number with my friend.

So please someone who expert and know about this matter can share to me
what i have to do. thank you

Steering wheel part number is A172 460 2703 9E38, contact plate number is A218 464 0117

Steering wheel

Contact plate

Where contact plate should be, i think behind the silver plate

He is referring to the "clockspring" It's set to a specific position to the computer knows the rotation of the wheel, it also usually has the airbag connectors and other electrical connection points in it. The problem is if it's not set exactly the computer will think the wheels are turned when they are straight so unless you take it off with it perfectly straight and lock it in place you might have to get a new one. Also not sure it fits the same steering wheel.

I suggest you research this steering wheel swap very thoroughly. When shopping around for my 2014 E350, most cars had a standard or leather trim steering wheel, and I wanted a wood steering wheel. I thought it would be a simple act to remove and replace the steering wheel, until I asked 4 different dealers, their service managers and their parts managers. All of them researched it, including consulting with MB USA HQ, and all of them were told (and relayed to me) "don't try to do this." On my '06 SL500 it was a simple straightforward swap out project for the wood steering wheel and shift knob, so I thought it would be simple on the 2014 E350, but I learned a lot has changed since 2006.
It may be possible to swap your steering wheel, but for my car the MB experts were dead set against trying it.

2014 E350 already equipped with sport steering wheel. As far as i know you will be more easy to swap, only have to know what part numbers of wood steering wheel. sport steering wheel has many option, with perforated, wood, or alcantara just different part numbers. sometimes when we asked to MB, they always said don't try, it can't.

Yes that is very true which is why you don't ask MB about doing such mods. I think the information is out here on this forum (specifically on the W204 board) on how to do this. Some members needed a new column stalk (the blinkers, windshield wipers, etc.) to get everything working. This may be the case as well. But it's certainly doable just need the right pieces- sorry I can't be of more help.

yes, i have checked same issue in w204 forum. some members done on steering column change, but there is one member didn't change everything since he done in 2012, and another only swap the chip(circuit board) and problem solved. still there is no settle conclusion here. from what i got from seller in ebay, in w212 no need change steering column (its only done in w204/glk), only need contact plate change.
