Why ti a 2011 E550 P2 for a 2015 E400?

I just received a fabulously fantastic irresistible almost giveaway offer from MB to trade in my 2011 E550 P2, 4 yrs old with 56,000 miles, for a 2015 E400 for ONLY $XX,XXX.

Is there any reason I should do that? Anything about the E400 that would entice me to give up that smooth V8 for a double-blown V6?

Frankly I can't think of even one reason. Can you? Is there anything about the 2015 that's significantly better than the 2011?

Yes - full warranty!

The 400 is quite a nice engine and a solid improvement vs the 350, you should drive it just to experience it. It's no V8 of course.

I am with you there - I would rather have a V8.

Fuel Economy is better. I'd still keep the V8.

OP - if you lived in say Cananda would you have considered a new 2015 E550 with the M278 V8?

Besides the full warranty mentioned by YYZ-E55, the 2015 E400 offers a number of improvements over the 2011 E Class:

electronic safety upgrades (e.g. Collision Prevention Assist Plus),
more robust body structure to achieve Top Safety Pick+ rating for IIHS,
360 surround view camera,
active full LED lighting system,
updated body styling,
better fuel economy,
300 lbs less weight over the front end for improved handling.

Are you unhappy with your current car? If not then pass the offer.
If yes then pass the offer and wait till the next generation arrives in 2016/17. Good luck with your car.

Never a good idea to buy the 1st year of a new generation model.

Just spend some time reading on the W205 Forum about the numerous QC issues that are plaguing the new W205 C Class, now being built in Alabama:

bleeding/oozing MBTex seats, mis-alligned bumpers and tail lights, screeching brakes, etc.

Just buy extended warranty and drive the E550.

I would skip the first year product from Mercedes (don't be the 1st year beta-tester for MBZ)

MB
New warranty, fewer miles, refreshed body and a chance to step up from the "luxury" trim to the "sport."

Keep the V8 (and extra money) until the next gen E is out for a couple of years.

I love the face lift look of the '14 W212 though, but I don't think it's worth trading down in power, ever.

Drive the E400 and let us know what you think yourself. Only feature on the new models I'm keen on is the surround view. Otherwise, you've got most everything in your loaded 2011 anyway.

You are right. I should have said wait till 2017/18 or until all bugs are sorted out.
What I am really against is trading your car (I mean the OP) for essentially the same generation car with lower power (the facelift not withstanding). You are really not gaining anything quality wise but the decrease in power and smoothness may bug you unless you like the new facelift that much.

DISTRONIC with Steer Assist is incredible. I'd give up the "loaded" 550 for the 400 with Intelligent Drive in a heartbeat.

FWIW, I had a 2010 E550C so I'm familiar with the old NA V8 - I'd rather have the tech.

Keep your V8 and buy an extended warranty, if you're concerned with repair costs. Sounds like you already have a damn nice vehicle already. While the E400 has some upgraded features, you'll be missing the power and feel of your V8 in a couple of weeks.

im not thrilled with going from a W221 S550 TTV8 to a E400 but payment for us is cut in half / MPG will increase due to 40 miles a day on highway. i will miss the blast from 0 - 135 tho ... we will see how the E400 performs.

the new car will be fully loaded compared to our base s550 with zero options....

the command unit alone is worth it to me .... bluetooth audio. distronic, 360 cam.

GO TEST DRIVE IT!!!! that would help you make a educated choice!

The comments here are really interesting, most offering minimal rationale to go to the E400. I remain not at all enticed, not even considering financials.

Here's the skinny on the offer. Understand this is a form letter from MB making a semi-commitment to a trade in from my 2011 E550 to a 2015 E400.

For starters, there is no way to perceive what the feature content of the E400 would be, particularly since my E550 is loaded.

Second, there is a mileage limit of 48,000 miles on my E550, when it's actually at 56,000.

All this suggests huge negotiating leverage by the dealer. (So what's new)

But, just for grins, let's say the feature content is identical and my mileage is within the 48,000 required, let's look at their offer. While I won't publish the exact number they offer, I have calculated this:

If a KBB used car value estimate is anywhere close to reality, when calculating the value of my current car MB is offering $7,388 less than the "private sale" value, and is offering $5,169 less than the "trade in" value,

So, not only does their offer have huge amounts of money baked in for them, there are enough terms and conditions built in to make accepting the offer not only financially insane, but also scary in execution (so to speak).
