E250 vs ML350 Bluetec

Hello everyone,

I just want your opinion which one you would keep for long term if you have both. BTW, both are 2015 models. Thank you!

The answer really depends partly on intended usage. If you really need the full cargo capacity of a mid-sized SUV and you aren't so concerned about the driving characteristics of this big, heavy machine, then maybe that's the one who want to keep.

On the other hand, the E250BT is much more fun to drive, handles like a German sedan, gets very decent fuel economy and its clean styling will stand up well over time. For highway cruising, I would also prefer the E250BT, since it is so quiet, more efficient, accelerates faster for passing, has great sight lines for visibility, has very comfortable seats front and rear, and tracks like a locomotive down the highway.

The ML350BT is heavier (by almost 1000 lbs.), is harder to manoeuvre, has slower steering, has very restricted rear visibility, is thirstier on fuel, has slower acceleration for passing and it drives like a truck.

Both the E250BT and ML350BT have 3 seats in the rear. What's the issue ?

Try to sit in the middle when you have two car seats, ML has more room than E

It should be the reverse, because according to published online stats, the shoulder room in the E Class is 1505 mm compared to the ML's 1489 mm.

However, according to www.edmunds.com, the ML has rear shoulder room of 58.4" whereas the E Class is 56.9", or 1.5" less.

The E250BT has the FE of a Hybrid with the power of a V6 and a torque of a V8. It's a great vehicle to keep for the long haul.
But with young children you'll often need the hauling capability of the ML.

I gave up my 2011 ML350BT for the 2013 E350BT and sometimes missed it when the wife want to buy larger items which can easily be hauled by the ML.

The ideal vehicle is an E250BT wagon if only M-B will bring that over!

The closest model to that would be the C250BT wagon, due to arrive early 2016.

I'm thinking of keeping ML for three years then trade it in for a new E class. I hope I won't lose too much $$$

That will certainly be worth a serious consideration and would be a threat for the BMW F30 328D. The new C class has a more luxurious interior than the BMW 328D.

BTW, would you mind sharing what's the average driving range in KM/tank you're getting for the E250BT?

Mixed driving, I've not empty my first full tank from the dealer yet, 3/4 tank I racked up 600km already, avg 9.4/L. Is that better than your current e350?

It's going to get better once you put more mileage on it.

My E350BT currently averaged (combined) 7.0 L/100 KM.
I do over 75% driving on the 401/404 highways.
On trips to Montreal I see 5.8 L/100 KM and can do a return trip from Toronto/Montreal (over 1,000 KM) without refueling!
Your E250BT will get even better FE than my E350BT.

Cheers

6 months in, we've averaged 7.2l/100km of mixed driving. You can easily do 5l/100 km on the highway.

Are your mileage figures based on actual fill-ups or on the computer readout ?
Reason that I ask is that I found that my previous E350BT computer was optimistic by 13% ! That's a significant error !

The E250BT computer seems to be more accurate.

Based on the computer read out for 82,000 KM.

Lately due to the cold winter, I noticed it's now 7.5L/100 KM.

Fuel is less potent in the winter - a result of lower power pour point for the cold weather.

The BC in our E seems pretty accurate, after 30.000km it indicates 7,5l/100km. I've to say that we drive for 60% in city-trafficjam (not the ideal situation for a 2 tonn. 4wd car ),30% highway and 10% countryroads...in my opinion is a good average consumption!
On the highway with cruisecontrol set at 140kmh it's incredibly efficient (14km/Liter) ,I admit this 4 cylinder diesel engine is a perfect match for a dailydrive-wagon,no need for the V6 even with the car fitted with 5 adults and luggages!

PS: due to our vexatory taxation on powerful petrolengine(plus the cost of petrol itself) we had to choose the diesel, but in my opinion the ideal engine would be the 500 V8...unfortunately I don't live in the US!
