Before I got married, I used to get into a new car every 9 to 18 months. That all changed after marriage. Since getting married 12 years ago, I've only bought 3 cars and the last one was due to the previous car getting totaled in an accident.
Now money goes towards the house and the kids, so less to play with. I will be keeping the E350 wagon until it falls apart or becomes too expensive to maintain. My Previous BMW had 175k miles on it before I sold it, and the only reason it was sold was because it wasn't big enough to fit the baby car seat in the back seat and stroller in the trunk. Otherwise we would've kept it.
We've had good luck with German cars, BMW had nothing other than maintenance in the 175k miles we had it, Wife's current passat is 8+ years old and no repairs other than regular maintenance, similarly my previous passat 3.6 wagon was 6 years old and no repairs needed. Wife had a C230 before the baby that also didn't have any issues (again sold due to being too small for baby).
We will keep buying german and keeping them till the wheels fall off? (long time).

lol i cant believe how much hyundai genesis crap i see. My half brother has one of those genesis. Interior is gar-bage, it doesnt even have a 1;1 gear ratio anywhere in the tranny setup... skips right over from 1.3 something to .75, he already broke second gear on the damn thing, only 60,000 miles it sounds like a tractor when it turns on and spools...
The metallic paint is the quality of a toyota; blue sparkles in the crappy paint that shows swirl marks with the lightest touch.
I just cant understand how this engine has people blown away. Hyundia just buys parts of old schematics... genesis has the old bmw fat trunk, the chrome trim doesnt even go the whole way around, its like 5 cars spliced together. and korean, which means its got a voice recorder and transmitter thats feeding info to the red party!!! lol lenovo style.
jk. truly tho, pos car. if you take care of your E and treat it right..... its going to reward you forever. The reason people get so down on MBZ for ANY ****ING PROBLEM is that your falling far from grace, in a hyundai... when something goes wrong, your not REALLLLY going to trip out. I mean, its a pos... =D Why would you expect more? but any mbz problem AT ALLLL people are going bat****.
I challenge this E class i own to cost me more than my acura did.

As a corallary to this, would you replace your 2012 or earlier with a new one if you got a new vehicle?
Just curious as no matter how many times I look at it, just can't see getting new "E" even with luxury grille due to the front end design.
Also, have five years with "E", the Hyundai Genesis is really beginning to look like a good buy.

I don't know that the Genesis is such a great buy either if you are looking at depreciation. Cars that sell in the upper 30's are retailing in the very low 20's maybe 3 years later. They are also being used as rentals and being dumped at the 2-3 year mark with 30-40k on the clock. Mind you they are the low end versions, no nav or fancy audio or electronics. I test drove one of these ex-rentals before I bought my used e350. It wasn't a bad riding car, felt fairly solid. But the interior was just average or even below average in terms of materials and fit and finish. It didn't feel like a 30+K car to me. It felt cheap.

Not to mention that the hyundai genesis is number 1(2014-2015 i think autoblog or wards) in depreciation the first few years; my friends at 60k was 12000... I dont buy cars to resell them ever, BUT.... the ONLY mercedes that made it on that top ten list was the S Class (losing 37k the first year. probably daimlers bribe and vacation home fund =D thats fine with me)
So mercedes isnt absollved of depreciation, but PURELY in enjoyment and ownership value no hyundai genesis will be in my driveway.
They did GOOD, i give them that, but nothing id ever sit in and call home.

2015 is better
I would think about it because of the direct injection, though I don't really care for the new grill on the latest models.

thats gr8 if you barely drive but 10 years for 100k miles is laughable to most people. Otherwise, my extended warranty is 3 1/2 years from 27k miles with unlim mile warranty;
My acura had multiple thousands of dollars immediately after the 100k mile warranty. Everyone has a different experience. All car companies have a qwerk or set of issues a good percentage of the owners will run it.

2009 E350
I'll set aside about $5K for unscheduled repair work. If it gets above that before 200K miles, I'll replace it. It's been a great car so far and I have friends/colleagues who have W211 and W212 around my year who have not had any problems, just like me. We're all between 60-80K miles on ours.
I'm hopeful, knowing someone with a 2001 E320 just over 200K miles, who said he's spent about $1000 outside of regular maintenance. Hmm, I like Honda/Acura products as I've had a couple of these. A 90s era Acura got me to 200K miles and I spent about $1000 on unscheduled maintenance work. An early 2000s Accord got me to 160K miles with less than $500 on unscheduled maintenance before it got totaled. I like my W211 enough to allocate the $5K.
I don't do any car maintenance on my own and I'd have to say the regular service every 40K miles makes me gulp each time the service interval comes up. The A and B service is OK but knowing I periodically have to hand over $1000+ for the normal stuff is a gut check.

Based upon the appearance of the new W213 and the lack of a non-AMG V8 option, I will definitely be keeping my 2014 E550 for a very long time. I absolutely love the styling, power, ergonomics, handling, and ride; Teutonic perfection.

2012 E350 BLUETEC
I bought my E350 Bluetec used with 20,000 miles. I plan to keep it for 5 or 6 years. It's a great car. Drives great and the MPG on the highway is outstanding, usually right around 40 MPG.

My 211 is 11y/o and it's phenomenal, I just love the older body style as it is truely timeless. My 212 will be the same, I plan on keeping it till it wears out. That's the only way I get rid of cars. I've never got rid of a car with less than 200k miles.

I figure it has at least another 100K in her before I think about trading her in.
Aside from brakes and tires, I had to fix one Ox Sensor and the front sway bars.

I currently own two Mercedes and a Genesis, I can say that the Genesis has far fewer problems. The Mercedes beats it in quality materials and ride. IMO the Genesis wins in reliability and in quiet super smooth acceleration, and a killer Lexicon sound system. I've had the Genesis since new and now with 193,000 miles on it, it still drives and runs like new, Never any mechanical or electrical problems, no oil usage or leaks. My E63, with 63,000 miles on it has already had a valve cover oil leak, pano roof repair, DIS knob unit replaced, seat fan replaced. My E63 wins in smiles per mile. My E500 is soooo smooth riding and is great for long freeway trips. I'm keeping the three to at least 200,000 miles. (Maybe 300,000 for the Genesis)

I'm still doing well with my 2010. Just a hair under 50k, so I've put about 22k on it in the two years or so Ive owned it. I keep up with all the scheduled maintenance myself. Only thing I had to fix was a wonky rear camera that would go black occasionally. All that was required on that was to pull down the trunk lid liner and cycle the connection between the camera and the wiring harness a few times. Now it works fine, no drop outs or extra time to sync. I've also got a bit of lifter noise when it first starts up, but that wont hurt anything and its not worth tearing the engine apart to fix.

In last a several years, I've had 2010 E550, 2014 Lexus GS 350, 2015 Hyundai Genesis, 2014 E550.
15+ Genesis is actually a great buy for the money. It has all safety equipment options that most other luxury cars have, in most cases, more. To equip V6 5 Series or E Class in a similar way, it would cost about 15K-20k more than Genesis. Blind spot information on heads up display, if you haven't tried it, you simply have to. Vent seat actually blows cold air! Genesis is quieter than both Lexus and Mercedes. Genesis is safer (at least does better in ALL crash tests) than both Lexus and Mercedes. Dealer service is excellent, they will give you another Genesis to drive, and maintenance costs less than $100 per visit in most cases). There is a reason why most critics all seem to agree that there is simply no better luxury/near luxury car at that price range. At 50k, there just isn't any other car that has that much technology, safety, reliability, and luxury content.
I am sure I may upset some people by saying this. But I would have stayed with Genesis and not get E Class if I were to get E350. I really enjoyed Genesis, more so than 62K Lexus GS in a lot of aspects. Only reason I came back to E Class is because I loved 2010 E550 and knowing 2014 E550 was the last E550 with latest design change, I had to get it.

Like many have said I keep my cars a long time -- about 8 to 10 years. Generally I keep them until it is more expensive to fix them than to buy a new one, or I get bored of them.
I ran the C55 AMG to 180k miles, had a blast modifying it and driving it to its [well, my] limits and only sold it because with my young daughter, wife and forthcoming new house, I needed a larger more reliable and softer car.
The '14 E350 is still a great car though. Similar performance to my first V8 AMG, a '99 C43, but infinitely more comfortable.

How long to keep em? Hmmmm:
2004 Suburban, 186k miles, still with us
2004 Volvo, 125K, still with us
1995 Carrera, 160k miles, my DD for yeeeears now
1982 911SC, 145k miles, rock-solid ...ridiculously good and still with us.
So yeah, we are long-term car keeper here, as well.
Our 2014 E350 is the first MB I or the wife have ever owned ...and in these few months, absolutely love it! If it treats us right, it will be with us forever. Did I mention I love driving her car?

I've swapped cars every 2 years, but when I got my '11 E350 I had it for 3 years before upgrading to a new-to-me '13 E550... I hope to keep this car until it's ready to get rid of me
