New Tires
I'm due for new tires on my 2010 E350 Sport. I'm replacing the noisy Pirelli P Zero's. I think I'm going with the Continental ExtremeContact DWS. What do you guys think of this tire? Also, has anyone tried the Continental PureContact with EcoPlus Technology tire?
Is it ok to use one of the local shops such as Mavis Tire or Pep Boys? |
I am on my third set of Bridgestone Turanza Serenity Plus tires. 150,000 on my Genesis and the Serenity is the tire that we keep getting because of ride, and handling with low noise. I will never go to Pep Boys again for tires. Several years ago a Pep Boys so called tech ruined the wheel studs and Hub on my car. The DWS is very good but gets noisy as it wears according to some on the Hyundai Genesis Forum.. The Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 Is very good too.

There is a lot of information on tires and preferences here if you search around different threads. I had the Extreme DWS on my E500 and they were okay but did get noisy. I have an E550 4Matic now and am running a new Continental tire from Discount Tire. It is the Conti Control Contact A/S. I rate this tire superior in control and noise to the DWS. I know that Discount Tire and other tire shops have relationships with manufacturers to produce vendor specific tires and I understand the good and the bad of that. I have had many Conti tires over the years and these are priced right and are wearing very well with no noise whatsoever at speed. I have a great relationship with my Discount Tire guys, so I continue to give them all of my business.

Had them on my 2007 E320 very noisy & with that tread design I lost 2mpg on long trips ---steady 70 /75 mph. My diesel got 38mpg prior to the Continentals. Yes they were noisy. Will put summer tires on in the future |

I think I'm going to buy the Conty PureContact A/S with Eco something or other. They're marketed as less sporty than their higher perf Conty DWS, but deliver a higher tread rating and are less expensive - plus they rate higher on (every?) nearly every measurable tirerack category (though tirerack argues you can't compare tires from one category to another).
Truth be told, my E is limited to 130-131mph and I spent most of my time behind the wheel being a good citizen. That's how I'm rationalizing passing on the DWS. Your mileage my vary. |
Disliked the DWS... Highly satisfied with the Michelin A/S 3.

As I previously stated I use the Serenity on my Genesis. For my E63 I plan on purchasing Michelin Pilot Super Sports.

I use Hibdon tires and run nothing but a Michelin on all my cars. I just bought a set from Hibdon and checked their price compared to tire rack. Hibdon was same price but included mount, balance, tax and disposal.

I know this topic has been talked about a lot but, I am so impressed with the new Conti pure contacts I need to chip in my two cents. I have been running the conti pure contacts for about 8,000 miles on my e550 4matic. Before that the DWS. The DWS did feel slightly sportier on a corner however, the snow performance of the pure contacts has just blown me away. The winter we have had here in western NY has been one for the record books and the Conti Pures performed extremely well, deep snow, slush, ice, pot holes, you name it. The Merc with the Cont pures could drive circles around my WRX with 4 snow tires. Even my wife's 4x4 chevy is no match in the slop. The Contis seem to be wearing well and are quiet too.

I just picked up a set of Bridgestone Potenza RE970AS Pole Position, so far I like them.

Which conti pure contacts? There appear to be a few.
Hope this helps. |
I might have gone with the ExtremeContact DWS but I see the PureContact with EcoPlus Technology beats it in every category on TireRack (although 44M vs. 3M miles driven in surveys and 4000 vs. 400 reviews):
ExtremeContact DWS https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...autoModel=E350 PureContact with EcoPlus Technology https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...autoModel=E350 I'll seriously consider the PureContact when it comes time to replace mine. |
I drove the Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position (predecessor to the new RE970AS) for a couple of winters and it wasn't a stellar performer in the snow. The tirerack ratings bear this out, but hopefully the new 970 is better.

I just looked on the Continental website and under the car tire button, then the passenger/cope/minivan button, the PureContact.
Hope this helps. Those Pure's look like a good deal as Noka and myself mentioned. |

I have those conti's on my S, and they're okay.......did your front wheels cup? that could have caused noise........try to get them pro-rated for a discount if they didn't live up to their quoted mileage.......I just got HALF off on a set of fronts because of cupping......
I really like Michelin too, and just got new meats on my cls, Pilot super 2's sport are really good tires, good luck |

"those conti's" means... "PureContact" or "ExtremeContact"? Cupping was covered? That's typically cause by alignment issues (possibly combined with improper inflation) isn't it? I never heard of any tire manufacturer covering cupping.
the cars alignment is good, and I always keep on top of my pressures.....which are higher in the front, and yes, pro rated....(Michelin) the sound was horrible, and after having the new ones, I can say for sure, the tech said it's good for credit, so I don't argue :) |
So was it the Conti Extremes or Michelins that were cupping and pro-rated?
