Unhappy I discovered rust (specks and tiny chips) on my new E350 - Please advise

Unfortunately, 2 weeks after leasing a 2015 E350 I noticed specs of rust. I first noticed them on the trunk but they are also on the hood of the car.
I feel foolish for not thoroughly checking the paint the day I picked up the car. You can only notice the specks upon close inspection. You can actually feel the larger ones under your finger.

It's diamond white paint. Please see attached pictures.

I plan to go to the dealership on Monday to show them.
What do you guys advise to do? Thanks for the feedback.

I am sure the dealer will correct it under warranty. I had defective paint on a 1989 Mazda 929 in the fall of 1988. After owning it for 2 days Mazda took it back and gave me another car of same color, model etc.

It's just rail dust, clay bar will remove it. Dealer should take care of it no problem.

Thanks guys. It definitely seems like a dust pattern.

I'll update after I visit the dealer on Monday.

I would just do it myself - claying is fun you can also look into a product called Iron-X designed for that purpose.

I would NOT mess with this yourself regardless of how minor it may be. Last thing you want is for it to not go as planned and them not take responsibility for it. Have them document it and deal with it 100%. That way if something goes wrong they are fully responsible.

This link tells how it should be properly removed, stating to NOT use clay: http://www.carwash.com/articles/89042-what-is-rail-dust

"Never use clay to remove rail dust because all that does is break off the tip of the metal particle, leaving a part of the metal still on/in the paint and when it rusts the spots will come back."

It certainly not rust. The hood and trunk lid are aluminum. (and fenders and doors)

Yes it is. It is rail dust embedded in the clear coat. It is metal, not aluminum and it rusts, and will continue to rust until removed. It has nothing to do with what the car is made of. It is a foreign material. Many manufacturers cover their cars in vinyl wraps on the horizontal surfaces(hood, trunk, top) to avoid the collection of this debris during transit, especially if transporting via rail car.

I meant the car will not rust. The rail dust is a contaminant that can be removed.

Claying doesn't break off anything. It works by actually pulling the whole contaminant out of the finish. I'd find a different detailing site if I were you. Yes, go back to dealer and they should fix it for you. Probably clay then polish.

Iron out

This is an easy fix. There is a product called Finesse Iron Out- Iron remover. I use it a couple times a year, usually in the early spring and fall. It is an amazing product, just spray it on and let it dissolve the iron. As it works it turns bright purple. It is amazing how much iron gets stuck to the finish from the brake pads and rotors. Even in areas that have no visible specks. This is a very simple procedure completely safe for the do-it-yourselfer. The worst part is that is smells like a perm, like when my mom used to give herself a perm at home...yuck. After that I clay, polish, seal, then wax, showroom shine!! There is a great bunch of guys in New Jersey at Detailers Domain. Just google their name, they and their website is very helpful. From your pics, it might take a couple applications to totally remove it all.

Good luck!!

Just an update...

I went back to the dealer and the service department told me it would cost about
$170 bucks to detail the car.
I then spoke with the general manager who said that cars are never delivered to the customer dirty like this. He said in his 31 years experience he has never seen this happen. I told him it's rail dust. He asked if I parked under a tree (LOL)
I told him it's rust and he denied that it's rust!

Anyway... after some back and forth he agreed to have the car detailed free of charge.
The car looks great and is smooth as butter.

Thanks for your help guys!

Cool, rust from trees. That's a new one!
Glad you got it taken care of at their expense, as it should be.

Parking under a tree doesn't embed anything into the paint! What a douche! Glad they took responsibility!

Right, wrong or indifferent ... this explanation matches-up nicely with what I've been told by my favorite auto detailing outfit. In my case, the backside of my silver colored SUV builds up enough of those itsy bitsy little speckles that I get them cleaned off every other year or so. After the treatment, it looks like a million bucks again. I figure it's no biggie.

Good luck! I'm sure your rig will be fine.

It takes at best an hour and $20 of materials to clay bar a wagon.
I did mine twice a year.
