E550 Rare - Why?
There seems to be a demand for the cars but the car seems to depreciate the same as say an E350 where there's 1000's of them out there.

The "book" value on the E550 is just trash. Like 10-12k. For that I'll just let it sit in the street and drive it when I want to. I'm looking for about 50% more. There are only 2 listed on Autotrader within 500 miles of me in FL. 2012-2013 sedan 550 with the TT V8. The 2014s are selling significantly higher.

An Aston Martin DB5 is a rare car...
A Jaguar XKE Type 1 would be a rare car...
A 1948 Tucker Torpedo is a rare car...
A Ferrari Enzo is a rare car...
Any Ferrari in a color other than red is a rare car...
A 1977 Honda Accord was rare when new, and rare now since all of them are now rusted away...
To me, you may have to look for one, but an E550 is not a rare car. Just a garden variety appearing Mercedes-Benz 4-door sedan with the bigger engine. Now, a W212 with a (theoretical) V-12 engine MIGHT be rare, but it would still be a non-descript, 4-door sedan, usually painted in standard silver, too.

Our new toy car is a 2021 Kia Forte GT with a 6-speed, 201hp turbo 4. It is much slower yet far more entertaining than the E-class.

I was one of those people when in the fall of 2010 I bought my brand new 2011 E350. I asked the dealer how much more the E550 would be and it was like $8000. At that time adding that on top of the $57000 price of the E350 did not sound so good as the thinking was you only get the bigger motor with about 100 more hp and the 268 that E350 has sounded plenty enough.
How wrong was I. This heavy car needs the bigger engine and so about a year later I traded my E350 for the current 1010 E550 and paid $9000 between them. This car came with driver assist package that was the other “must” with the big engine. Best car deal I ever made!
And the best car I have ever owned!
But back to the rarity of it. People who bought the E350 either don’t know or don’t care what difference the bigger engine brings to the car. Most probably don’t care as they are happy cruising with their Mercedes. It takes certain mind to want to have the more powerful engine and obviously those drivers are not that many.
Or a lot of power hungry drivers went with the AMG with even more umph.
Why does it not reflect in used E550 pricing is beyond me. I know these cars are wanted as my local dealer has offered to buy my car three times with 10% higher than the market price is. Due to the mileage my car kbb value is around $9500 if even that. I have no desire giving this awesome car away for “nothing”.
But rare it is. I have seen five E550 cars other than mine so far since I bought this one in January 2012 when I started looking for them.

And they were all different based on model year.
