E550 Owners - driving style?

Just wondering, do you guys drive your cars aggressively? It seems like I'm the only Mercedes driver on the roads pushing his car. This is not to say that I beat up my car, but I do have a car with over 400hp. Shouldn't I be pushing it a little or should I be driving it as if I am retired? I'm not that easy on the gas pedal.

cc16177 01-11-2016 01:09 PM

I wouldn't say I drive aggressively but I drive faster than most people and definitely faster than most MB drivers I see on the road.

Yes, aggressively is probably the wrong word. I do drive this car fast and was wondering why everyone else doesn't seem to. :nix:

jahquan3 01-11-2016 03:13 PM

It depends on how I feel on a certain day. Most days I drive like an old man in the city just slow rolling but on the highways I push it as I push most of my cars I've had pretty hard. If someone irks me for whatever reason or if I'm in a hurry I drive it like I stole it LOL.
On a scale 1 to 10 of driving hard, I'd say I'm a 7 while most MBs I see are a 2 :)

Same here, about a 7 whereas most around here are a 2. Glad it's not only me.

thefisch 01-11-2016 04:02 PM

I only push it when I will get to enjoy the power. Mostly when the roads are clear. Even then I only take it to 5 or 10 above the posted limit. My wife says I drive like a grandpa which is to say I do coast from time to time - it's not always gas or brake like she drives. I just don't see the point in traffic of accelerating until it's time to brake.

I drove the same way with my previous cars except for the occasional pedal punch.

ffr2014 01-11-2016 04:02 PM

When traffic is very light or the road is open in front of me, I definitely enjoy driving fast in my tuned E550 (500HP)! Great thing about the TTV8 is it's perfectly happy loafing along or being pushed! :-)

rediesel 01-11-2016 04:03 PM

I push mine harder than most I see out there. I didn't buy the powerful V8's to not use them.

Dema 01-11-2016 04:07 PM

Stay away of distronic. It kills all aggressiveness and makes you 70 years old grandpa.

g4benz 01-11-2016 04:14 PM

Awesome that I have company!

I could and still never understand the gas or brake driving method. The real odd part is that it's mostly done by the _______ gender.

Ok, I won't go further with that statement.. :D

J.M.G. 01-11-2016 05:38 PM

Well we just did a quick trip to my girlfriends parents. They are about 140 miles away from our home. On Thursday night, we were able to to that in just over an hour averaging more than 130mph...and we used more than half of the gas tank :)

Drive it like you stole it AS LONG AS you do not harm anybody!

cocobeex 01-11-2016 06:20 PM

I push mine really hard only if I got tailgated.
Or someone around trying to show off their rice cars.

I'll make sure they know the power of e550

badbenzz 01-11-2016 08:29 PM

I drive aggressive regardless of the car I am in but safely.....

Abrown3mtg 01-11-2016 09:02 PM

mine: with an angry look on my face back to the STAR computer to sort out what the next Airmatic issue is.....

:D.

Aside from that, it really depends on my mood. I typically flow with the faster side of traffic and unless I'm in a hurry or just in the mood for some grins, I am relatively conservative.

550x2 01-11-2016 09:41 PM

I drive quickly more than fast. I love the push of my ttv8! Makes me smile!

MBSebas87 01-11-2016 09:51 PM

I only have an E350 but I drive it very aggressively whenever is safe of course! I'm planning to upgrade to a 2014 e550 later this year or early 2017! I'll make sure i report back ;)

Johnny Rad 01-11-2016 11:02 PM

I admit to being a grandpa - too much traffic in my M-F commute to open it up much.

I cherish the few opportunities I get to make it fly. Reminds me to smile!

Weekend I'm pushing around a buzz-kill SUV with balloon tires.

PaulE550 01-12-2016 12:02 AM

When the traffic on the highway is minimal and the speed traps are not out, there's nothing like opening her up into the triple digits and listening to the sound. What a great feeling of flying down the road. :-)

I had the opportunity a few months back while In Germany to rent an E and drive on the Autobahn. Now that is what I call fun!

Triple digits? I haven't taken mine over 90MPH yet. :eek:

jonUF02 01-12-2016 10:23 AM

I live in the middle of a city, and I don't drive far each day, or on the highway much, but I love the push I feel when I hammer it right when it hits 2nd gear off a stop light. I did a long road trip, and you don't even know you're doing 110mph, feels like 80 in most cars.

These cars are incredibly safe, well built and have a very solid when it comes to handling. They were designed to run on highways at much greater speeds than we can legally drive them here. You won't break anything on them by occasionally pushing them a bit. Of course, you should only drive your vehicle to the levels you feel safe doing so. Safety first and foremost.

No wonder the guy before me had a radar detector in the car - lol. The car does feel solid. I will open her up a bit more the next time I am on the highway and it is safe to do so.

I've only went over 100 once but I drive 80-90 at least once a day. I have a good 15 miles strip of highway that I can do that just with the flow of traffic. The other portions of the highway though I keep it around 75 or so since you'll stick out going 90ish.

I agree with this overall. My previous long term DD was a 2013 Ford Fusion and I drove that way harder then I drive my E probably. I think a part of that was little man syndrome trying to compensate for it's lack of raw power. Sometimes now I'll just let a Prius or Civic blow past me. Lil boogers deserve to feel good too lol.

In my opinion the car feels more and more "solid" the faster you go (to a point).

For me the sweet spot on the Florida Turnpike is between 95-105mph.

I agree. For some reason, I feel in "total control" of the vehicle around 60MPH+. It could be the clunky shifting in lower gears which many of us face with the 550's.

J.M.G. 01-12-2016 01:38 PM

Wow, I may hit triple digits on occasion, but not enough to bump up my highway average from the high 70's. Of course, we don't have the autobahn here. It mostly happens with passing situations as it's hard to notice with these cars how fast you are going.

For me, reaching those speeds is about putting some distance between myself and traffic situations like truck passing or cars that tend to group together. Once I get some open road, I tend to set the cruise control and relax.

DaddioMB 01-12-2016 02:03 PM

First trip in I-5 in California in ages...

Ok, so how fast can you drive before the police care? I was doing around 80 and being passed by everyone...including a Prius. That didn't feel good.

Why not? If it breaks I can throw it away and buy 2 more of the same used car for what a new one costs.

Nah, they have to go around the block once or twice before they're any good. You just don't want one that's all dirty and neglected, or bashed up.

kotton 01-12-2016 07:14 PM

Hell yes, and i actually use the paddle shifters when opportunity strikes. Nothing like coming up on someone doing 60 in the carpool lane, holding down the left paddle to select the best passing gear, and then quickly getting around them the next line break.

That big NA v8 sounds awesome starting in first gear at a green light as well.

walterk55 01-12-2016 07:28 PM

I drive pretty slow around town, but once on the highway she goes right to 90 (until my wife's screaming begins, at least!) Then I keep her at 80-85. I like the app Waze it let you know then the heavy hand of the law is nearby. As soon as Waze says "Police ahead" I drop to 65, and let the less informed run straight into the speed trap. I love seeing Maxima's pulled over...

Munich77 01-12-2016 09:50 PM

I drive enthusiastically - I try not to get into too much trouble but I love how the engine pulls.

z06michael 01-12-2016 10:48 PM

I live in the S.F Bay Area and of course there is always brutal traffic but when I get out of town I let er RIP!!!!!!!!!

I drive the **** outta mine - mostly in manual - and I love every minute of it. Then again, I do all of the work and repairs so I ain't scared nothing's gonna break nor do I drive like it.

This is what I have to learn to do. I never use the paddles and I know it can give you more control over the way the car pulls off.

My car doesn't have the paddle option, which is fine for me. And I don't know about the W212 models but the computer is gonna take control of the upshifts anyway if it senses you're heavy on the throttle. Basically, you just have to downshift if need be. The thing is pretty fool-proof. 4-6k rpm is the SWEET spot. There hasn't been a day gone by that I haven't hit 100+, and since I got my OE Tune, I see 150 once or twice a week. Nothing worse than hitting the limiter when someone in a pos Beamer or new Camaro wants to play. Now I bring it to whoever wants it.

g4benz 01-14-2016 11:39 AM

I remember when I went for a test drive in this car back in April. The previous owner sat in the back and was raving about the power of the car. I stepped on the gas, albeit cautiously, but was like "okay, cool". The previous owner then said try the paddles. I have no idea how to use paddles and still do not. He said he would guide me from the backseat. Once I hit those paddles, I was in serious race mode. Manual does make a big difference IMO. I just need to learn how to use those paddles!

P.S. Don't get me wrong, the car is still a beast in auto, but paddles is superbeast mode!

J.M.G. 01-14-2016 02:41 PM

That is true for the 5.5 N/A. The 4.7 TT on the other hand as a ton of torque and the 7g-TronicPlus. The new transmission -which was exclusively for the M278 engine- allows multible downshifts.

An example: Lets assume, you are cruising at 40mph in "E"-Mode. The E550 5.5 will use 5th gear. The E550 4.7 will use 6th. Now you push the throttle all the way through the KickDown-Point (WOT). The car will start to shift:
E550 5.5: 5->4->3->2 and then will take-off
E550 4.7: 6->2 and takes-off

That makes the 4.7 way more responsive. It also gives you the feeling of being even more powerfull than it is. In the end it is also the reason, why paddles are pretty useless here.

I even had Mercedes code the "M" mode into my vehicle*, as I missed this mode coming from my '08 E550 5.5 at the beginning, until I found out, that I do not need that anymore!

So in the 5.5 liter, manual downshifts before hitting the go-pedal was really a good idea. In the 4.7...just let the automatic do its job. Manual downshifts might even harm performance, as you could end up in a turbo lag!

That's been my experience too, there is so much torque down low that ya really don't need to hit it hard to move off real well, and i like the low rev burble when you let the torque get you going...

I drive the NA 550 and when I want to make it go fast I hold the left paddle for two seconds and the car will shift directly to the gear giving the best acceleration.

The problem I have with this is that I forget to shift up as I'm used to drive in AUTO mode and the car is too quiet to hear the engine. But it surely takes off with this procedure...

jahquan3 01-14-2016 04:42 PM

^Interesting one Arrie.
I will try that as I always feel like I'm doing more harm to the tranny when I even attempt to use the paddles. My first car was a manual so I just can't wrap my head around not using a clutch and a gear shift knob when manually shifting in a vehicle. It just feels awkward every time I've tried.

Yeah, this works. If you just quickly click the left paddle the car will change to a gear one lower than it was using in automatic mode but if you hold it for a couple of seconds it will go directly to a gear that gives you the best acceleration at the speed you are traveling.

The 2011 E350 that I had was the same.

I also think this is mentioned in the manual but not sure...

This is exactly what I do, including the part about forgetting to click back to auto again since it is so quiet.

No, it does not. By pressing and holding the left paddle the car shifts into gear for best acceleration indeed. However, it does not do this directly. It still follows the shift pattern of the 7g-Tronic, which is one gear at once, except for the direct multible downshift from 7th to 5th!

This is one of the two main differences to the 7g-TronicPlus that comes with the 4.7 TT! The PLUS can also do the following patterns:
7->5
6->2
5->3
4->1

The other main difference from a drivers perspective: The PLUS has an additional torsion damper in the torque converter, which allows lower RPM without resonances or vibrations. So the M278 can use higher gears at the same speed...

I rarely use the paddles, but I didn't know about the holding down the button thing. I'll try it for sure. I noticed that my 2012 does tend to use very high gearing for city driving.

On my old W208, I would leave it in 3 or 4 (of 5) around town to prevent it from going too high and loosing the power to accelerate on demand. The manual shifting on MB is more of a "maximum gear" setting, as it will down-shift automatically when you stop; not fully manual like a Ferrari or something.

Well,

I don't know exact details of what happens inside the gear box but I know that the transmission shifts to the optimum gear just as fast as it shifts between just two gears when I use the paddles. Because the baddle use is very slow for gear shifts I don't use it other than when on rare occasion I'm behind someone on a 2-lane road and want to pass fast. Holding the left paddle puts the car on the correct gear fast and the car really takes off fast too. And it does not matter how many gears it changes. It always happens equally quick.
