Radar install

I'm going to install a Beltronics sti-r on my '12 e350. Does anyone know a good, accessible place to feed a wire thru the firewall? Thank you for your time and help.

No replies, I'm going to assume most everyone on the forum pays to get work done. Thank for the help.

You ask the question at 3 am then reply to yourself at 7:48 am when no one responds. I had radar installed by outside firm and I have no idea where they came through the firewall. But I definitely would not go out to find out where at 3am in the morning. If I get time some time today I will go and see if I can tell where they came through. You have to have patience.

The times are not correct. It was longer than 4 hrs. I didn't know time stamps are not set to your device. I appreciate the help. I've taken passenger front floor board apart all the way to the metal. There is nothing to use after all taking it all apart. Im by no means impatient. The time says 11:26pm when i actually posted it at 6:26pm. I've looked how to change time zone and there is nothing. .

Well I looked under my hood My car is different from yours. Next to on both side of the fuse box on drivers side next to the fire wall are Rubber plugs that can be removed to allow access through the firewall. If your car has these just remove one and slide it through. It may be high up under the dash but it should work if you have them. Also you can try and slide it next to the wire harness as it goes through the fire wall. Good luck.

Thank you. I'll try that. I seen them but wasn't sure if they were glued in.

They snap in. Use a small flat screw driver and gently pry off. Once off you can slit a hole in middle and feed wire through and then snap back in

I'm not sure if the engine bay and tub is different than my 2010, but imagine the firewall is the same. When I installed my amp as well as the 9500ci (essentially the same as the sti-r+), I used the same place to do so.

I removed my battery from the engine bay, underneath it, there is a rubber grommet. Make a small cut in and run the plug to the antenna into the cab. Wrap the plug with electrical tape so you don't snag and break it. There is quite a bit of foam and such in that area. I used a snap-on camera to explore when I did my install. A coat hanger, tape, and a chase string is your best friend in this install! I ended up tapping switched power from the passenger side footwell as well off of the wire for the cigarette lighter at the harness. I ran the power wire and receiver wiring behind the center console. Remove the panel above the steering wheel, drill a hole and epoxy the USB port for updates and tuck everything away. I ran my controller out to the right of the steering wheel, I played with a few areas for the display, I ended up pulling the screen out and a few stereo components and settled on mounting it in the display surround of the Nav screen. I had initially planned to drill a hole/notch the bezel surround of the dash. I picked up a spare with the black wood trim. (It's for sale) as well.

Feel free to ask any questions as you get deeper in the install. Good luck (if you aren't done already)

Nice work!!! Install looks great! I love how well the display fits up in the corner of the Nav surround (and that it was easy to route the wiring from the location).

I ended mounting the controller on the wood trim just behind the shifter. There is accent lighting there. The wire fits through with no modifications or damage necessary. Initially I'd mounted mine under the column like you did but muting k band false alarms and manual lock outs/mode changes were too clumsy.

I would LOVE to mount the remote using the Mobilesolutions-usa custom mounts http://www.mobilesolutions-usa.com/s...ar_Bezels.html. but at 120.00 for on and 200/pair it is a bit much to swallow and impossible to justify the cost at the moment.

Where are you going to relocate the antenna to? Planning to cut through the mesh in the lower middle grill? Or?

I plan on putting it in the middle head rest which is another project day. I dont plan on cutting any mesg. I had to adjust the receiver enough so the whole front of it was able to see under the grill piece. I wanted to attempt putting the display in the mirror, but the cord is too short. Thanks for looking and feedback.

Is the radar detector head face straight forward and level or cocked? Range will be reduced if it isn't "looking" straight out or flat. Mirror installs are tough. I didn't want to damage the casing either! I like how it is shielded from sun and is stealth enough for my needs

It is level and straight. It has a open view of the road. I have a star grill, if i put other one on i may have to adjust it depending on the openings.

Awesome! I bet it will work well. Let me know if you decide to pull the star grill, I might be interested in buying it

Ha. Yeah, there is another vendor that does an all black star grill with a couple horizontal slats. That is the option I will be mounting up come summer (along with some summer wheels and a front lip)

Sorry to sidetrack your thread.

I also looked at black. Knowing what I know now i wish i had. I wanted to paint mine same as body color. The shops here wont paint chromed plastic because they cant guarantee work.

Scuff the surface, seal it and prime. Than hit it with MB touch up spray paint yourself. Alternatively, you can remove the chrome by feathering it with a propane torch. I was going to experiment with that process on a factory grill, but OEM chrome is a lot tougher than aftermarket. I never got around to it. I ended up just wrapping mine in some 3m Vinyl for the time being.

That is a bit of a loaded question. Where I live, the flow of traffic is on average 10-15 mph above the posted speed limit. When highway patrol wants a customer, it's shooting fish in a barrel. I prefer to go with the flow of traffic but have awareness and warning whenever possible to avoid any chance of becoming the unlucky party with a nice fine to pay.
