Just picked up an E400 >Pics inside<
I had shopped Lexus, but really didn't like the Styling. Felt something more traditional would be appropriate...
Test drove the C-63, and although it would have been a Great Vehicle if I was 30 yrs old, It was a little to brash for my current taste.
Then I was on to the C450. Loved the Styling, and power, but I was realizing a Theme here... The C-Class was just too Small in the interior. The thing that bothered me the most was all the Road vibration being transmitted thru the Tires and into my seat, and steering wheel. Thos Run-Flat, Oops! I mean extended mobility tires, Really suck! Oh, and the other thing I did not like was the Touch Screen on the Armrest.
So I moved onto the E class, and tried the E400. Ahhh... No Run Flat tires! Yeah! and there is even a spare tire in the trunk...
Also, a Beautiful Command knob ONLY on the ARmrest... Yeahh...
And, A traditional Volume knob for the radio!...
And, Lastly, Lots of power, good gas mileage, and lots of room...
So, Thank you Mercedes, for making this last E Class the way I like it!

It is a Comfortable and Relatively Quiet car. I was thinking about some mods, but I don't have any ideas yet... I'm sure I'll gets lots of Ideas here...lol
Being 51, I have come to appreciate the more Luxury side or Luxury/Sport. I thought the C-63 would be my car, but after the drive, it was history...
Any mod ideas, or upgrades to correct any deficiencies?

Welcome to the frustration of that first 1,000 miles of break-in! I'm sure you will really enjoy the 3.0l TT engine, once you get to know it. I'm a bit older than you, and still love to hear it sing as it blasts past the traffic.
I enjoy mine so much that I've come to the conclusion that MB mis-named the 'S' button on the console. I think it should be named the 'Stupid' button -- for that great big stupid grin that will appear on your face once you press the button.
The E400 is a great sleeper. It is much faster than people expect, but it really doesn't look the part. Kind of like a serial killer in a grey suit.
Enjoy!

Congratulation on the E400 ! Wifey used to own a white car and it was challenging to keep it clean. LOL ! The lightning package would definitely standout in day and night time.

Beautiful car. I saw somewhere on here a person did a basic tune and got like 100Hp extra from that engine. It was no more then a grand. So if you do want a little more pep, you can add it to that for a decent price. If you search on here it should pop up fairly fast. I doubt you'll want that since it's new but just an FYI. Enjoy

You aint kidding! At night it's like a saucer had landed. First White Car, aside from my boat...
Thank you ! Wea re brother's from another mother...
You betcha! I'm running the Continental's all weather, and they seem fine. Curious if anyone has upgraded to a Max Summer tire, for the summer, or just replace with Conti's again?
Thank you! The Lights are awesome. I did see them turning with the car on a dark road. Yep, LED is the way to go. I thought BLack was hard to keep clean...lol The white is just as hard as Black...Or should I say POLAR.
Than you! I'll take your word for it...
Thank's! The White Pano COmbo is the Ticket. I felt that the C-63 was more of the same that I am used to. Lots of Power, Rough Ride, and noisy cabin. The C-63 in the looks department, is awesome, including the Red gauge surrounds! The C-450, AMG LITE, is similar with those dern runflats! I couldn't stand them...But the C-450 did look Great! I wanted to err on the side of Luxury this time
Thank you. That is great info. I'm sure I'll be wanting something once I get really comfortable with the E. Yeah, the Black and the Grey just didn't hit any buttons. White is outta-Sight...lol
Thank you! we too are brother's from another mother...I can learn lots from all the mods you have done... I haven't had a chance to look around but did I see a 3x5x5 in battery in the back, in the trunk?
It's Funny you should say that. I spent about 3 days searching for a 2014 E550, but it is hard to get the color and options you want, at the right price. Plus! I went shopping for used E400's and they wanted ridiculous price. a 2016 E400 in Los Angelas, with 25,967 miles, they wanted $59,950! they said they would go down to $57k
Thank you! The Porsche CAb is second to none. I love hearing those RPM's soar... Nothing like it it that affordable.
I have noticed that the front get's lots of bug splatter on it, and I have lots of Gooo leaking out of the bottoms of the doors. Not sure what to use on it but i guess some simple green should work.. Is that from when they ship the cars of what?

I think the leaking goo may be the preservative they put on the cars for shipping, or something they use in final production that the dealer removes at delivery. Both of our MB's seeped slightly for the first month or two. Any sort of car polish seemed to remove it.
I'm quite convinced that Gonzo (my E400) is male, because not only does he like to mix it up and get aggressive on the road, but he also seems to like to play in the dirt. The E-Class seems to be one of the hardest cars to keep clean that I've had in my 50+ years of driving. These cars do look really sharp when they're clean and shiny, though.

Initially I thought I still needed all that power, but after test driving I realized that I was leaning more toward Comfort...
While I was researching the 2014 E550 and the 2016 E400 I found some data that's pretty interesting...
The E550
Displacement: 285 cu in, 4663 cc
Power: 402 hp @ 5000 rpm
Torque: 443 lb-ft @ 1800 rpm
The E400
Displacement: 183 cu in, 2996 cc
Power: 329 hp @ 6000 rpm
Torque: 354 lb-ft @ 1600 rpm
I see those number's and I'm like
But in reality, the lighter weight of smaller engine, makes the car feel nimble when I'm going thru the turns. It has enough power for a luxury car, and the engine is smooth... I don't know maybe I'm getting older...

The numbers are truth, but the results are as well. I keep thinking back to the Car and Driver instrumented tests I read last August. They said that their test cars (E550 and E400) were very close in performance. Their instrumented results showed the E400 to be 0.5 sec slower than the E550 both from 0-60 mph and through the 1/4 mile. Half a second can be gained or lost in driver reaction time.
FWIW, they also said that their test of the E500 (NA, a few years prior) showed the E400 to actually be 0.5 sec faster than a stock E500, again in both the 0-60 sprint and in the 1/4 mile.
So, while the E400 is "only" a V6, in daily operation it is quite satisfying to drive and is very capable. In traffic, other people just say "that thing is fast!"

Are we done measuring ourselves yet?
I honestly feel that my 2011 NA 5.5 V8 is sometimes much more than I really need. And with the E550 last seen in 2014 with no return date, it may be the last V8 I own. If I keep my car for the 6 or so more years I plan then I would be ready to replace with a 2018 or 2019 model. I guess that may be the E400 or whatever they offer then.

Nah. Couldn't get the grinnie emoticons to work, either. I'm just saying that in the normal daily (for me) stop light grand prix, the TT V6 is far more than most people give it credit for.
I haven't been on a drag strip for over 40 years, but I'm still timing the "tree" at stoplights. Keep on keepin' on.

What (most) people with E400s (based on test drives and published tests) are missing is that E550s (especially the TT) are not so much about 0-60, but more about 60-80 (or more like 60-100). It get "there" just like that. If one drives mostly in the city, then yes E400 (and considering E550s are no longer available) will do just fine (especially when A/C is off), but if one drives mostly on "open" freeways, well there's no comparison in how both feel.

I'll admit -- if there had been any new E550's left locally I would have one, but absent any new 550's, I'm having a lot of fun with the E400.

I agree with the OP (congrats on your new car!) and Steve, recently moved from a C55 AMG to an E350. In my fiftieth year with a 4 year old, the whole family prefers comfort and space to the go-go intimate road connection provided by the C55. Strangely enough, the E350, and certainly the E400 is faster than my previous C43 AMG and far more comfortable than either AMG. What I like best about the w212 E, is the automatically variable suspension, very comfortable and as sure footed as I need.

Sure ...let me know if you have any questions. Yep, that's the secondary battery in the trunk.
