Angry Keyless fob car won't start Key Not Detected

Randomly my car won't start and I get the message "Key Not Detected" I have had this problem since day one on my 2015 E350. I have been to the dealer several times. Replaced batteries, no help. Read computer error log, no help. Software update, no help. They finally said there was an issue with static electricity when putting keys in your pocket and pulling them back out. They ordered some leather covers for the key fobs. It has helped but has not fixed the problem. Pressing the unlock button always re-syncs the fob and it starts working again. Very frustrating. I have a Toyota RAV4 with keyless start. Absolutely no problems. I called the dealer again today and scheduled another appointment. At least this time they are admitting there is a problem, but are unsure how to fix it. The service tech said they are having this problem with the newer 2015-2016 models. If you are experiencing this problem please let the dealer know. The more complaints they have the more resources they will direct to solving this issue. I also have times the keyless door won't work or the trunk won't open.

Sounds like it could be the antennas on the car aren't picking up the radio frequencies from the key. Have you tried using the spare key to see if there isn't a problem with your fob?
Sorry for the previous posts - Technical Difficulty.

I had a similar problem; they had to replace a sensor behind the bumper so the keyless go key could be detected (I think it was actually the wiring harness that was bad).

Repair on my 2014 was about a month ago - have not had the issue since (and I did remove the stupid key cover after the repair - I was using a silicone one)

I remember my mother's Lexus RX having that issue 2 years ago. They replaced the antenna that senses the positioning of the key inside or around the vehicle. I know that Mercedes keyless-go can be temperamental at times so it could just be something simple. If the start button doesn't work just pull it out and use the key.

This happens on occasion in my 12 E350, while in the car key not detected I grab the fob and hit the lock button then unlock button and press keyless go and car starts right up.

Still no fix. The dealership had the car for 2 weeks the last go around. I am taking the car back again. They know it is a problem with static electricity and the key fob. I don't know why they con't just bite the bullet and redesign the fob to protect against it. There is some token that gets lost between the car and the fob. It always works properly after pressing the unlock button. I guess I will just keep taking the car back every month or so. If your car is experiencing this problem please take it to the dealer. The more complaints they get the more likely they will begin to address this frustrating problem.

There is a thread on here about this same issue on other year models. IIRC it had something to do with the infrared not picking up properly due to static electricity. I'll search and see if I can find it and report back.

See post #17 and a few right around it. If you search a few other threads come up as well.

For what it's worth, just an update to my post from 2 months ago. After the dealer replaced the part in the bumper to detect the key I have not had the issue since.

I have a 2014BT and had the issue with key not detected since I bought it new in March 2014. I replaced batteries, the dealer suggested a silicone key cover for static electricity, etc. but since they replaced the part I've been golden (and took off the silicone key cover)

You may want to push for something similar on your car. FYI my car is serviced at Open Road of Bridgewater NJ
