Extended Warranty

I am looking to purchase a used 2014 E350 that has about 35k miles on it. It is not CPO so it does not come wtih the extra 1 year of warranty.

I am a bit nervous since we usually just buy new but due to the accident which totaled our car we are trying to spend only what we were paid out on.

The 2014 E350 that we've looked at has 35k so it is still under warranty for about 1.3 years however I am wondering what would be the best way to go about getting the extended warranty on the car. We are planning on keeping it for about 5 years.

I called the local MB dealer and was quoted 4600+tax for the 7yr/100k from MB and not 3rd party and he stated that this could be applied to new or used. I also called a dealer in NC and they stated i can get extra 2 years from MB for 2400 however it needs to be CPO.

Did anyone purchase extended warranty on a non CPO used MB before? and who did you use and how much was it ?

I would check the extended warranty forum for referrals. MB Santa Clara and MB Austin were mentioned a lot when I looked but that was two years ago. Plenty of stories there from folks who have purchased the MBELW on used non-CPO cars at a discount. You can do better than that price you were quoted.

The dealer who told you about CPO extension is way off since that doesn't apply to this car. Some dealers might tell you that you can't get the MBELW if not original owner. Better to deal with those dealers mentioned in that forum.

How much are you paying for the car? I think you should be fine without the warranty. but you never know.
The engine and tranny are pretty solid. $4600 is a little expensive. I would negotiate with them if you can. $3k would be nice.

If you're not in a rush to buy, then search the MBUSA site for their CPO inventory: http://www.mypreownedmercedes.com/
Looks like there are over 1000 2014 E350s w/ CPO available. The typical price difference on a CPO car is about +$2000, and the CPO warranty is for unlimited miles and can be extended 2 more years.
Call Erin at Santa Clara MB for your M-B ext warranty = good deal.

Go check the extended warranty thread. Best price I have seen is $100 over cost from one of the folks mentioned in the thread. I think that was Jeff.

What I would do before looking into extended warranty is looking up the reliability of the certain model. In the case of this car, Consumer Reports gives this a "Good bet" label and on the chart remains solid performer. It rates very well in JD Power as well. I personally would not get an extended warranty. Reason why is what you're basically doing is prepaying a repair that may or may not ever be needed. The engine and tranny (if you get a not 4matic) is very solid. Stats show this car is as reliable as you're going to get in this segment without buying a Lexus. And imo Lexus dropped the ball on their cars years ago. My advice is to find an indie mechanic that specializes in MB for your maintenance and repair needs. It's often cheaper than the stealer ship and often times they do a better job. Of course if a loaner or unlimited use of coffee and donuts, car wash and free Directv is needed, the dealership is worth it.

Out of curiosity, what's the issue with the 4matic that makes it less reliable?

I purchased an MBUSA ELW on my car and glad I did. Saved me more than the cost of a repair. Not to mention, the peace of mind.
MB's are expensive to repair, both for parts and labor. Whether you use an independent or a dealership. I have a lot more confidence in dealerships than indys, who may have been "certified" some time in the past, but they are not in the MB network.
Incidentally, I have never purchased an ELW on any other cars. I have two Japanese makes and do not plan to purchase ELW on either. MB, or any Euro luxury make, is a different issue.
As for CR ratings, they used to separate the V6 RWD sedan out from the V8 and 4Matic, but no longer do that. The V6 RWD always rated much higher on reliability than the others.

Just more parts that can go bad like the transfer case which you don't have with RWD.

If your car is still under factory warranty and purchased at a MB dealer, they will offer you an extended warranty at a good price
From what I understand, it is better to purchase a used MB that has original factory warranty left than one that is CPO already.

As other mention, I would check the extended warranty thread and get in touch with the people listed there. I just bought an extended warranty from Jeff Jackson, he got back to me timely, patient and made everything effortless. Save a bit over buying outright from dealer since I had time to shop around.

But I believe the CPO is the only one that offers unlimited miles correct?

CPO is unlimited miles. MBELW goes up to either 75k or 100k miles in total depending on option purchased.

First part is right but car doesn't have to be purchased at MB dealer to get MBELW. It can be purchased from private party or another dealer and should be eligible so long as still under factory and not a CPO (or car that was previously CPO'd but not sold as one).

The MBUSA website has information on their extended warranty. You can also call MBUSA customer assistance to discuss it with them. Then find best dealer's price.
Highly recommend the MBUSA ELW as any dealership will honor it.

Do you wait for CPO to be near expiration to look at ELW. Mine still have 19 months left and I wonder when is the best time for purchase.

For a CPO car, only option is extension of CPO by buying up to two additional years (i.e. 3 years total CPO coverage, unlimited miles). IIRC you have until the end of first CPO year to buy additional years. Ask for pricing from dealers recommended in extended warranty forum.

The MBELW is different than CPO coverage (in short MBELW>CPO for what's included) and is only for non-CPO cars but also offers up to 3 years of coverage (mileage limited though).

Actually if the car is bought at an MB dealer, it has to have a CPO warranty. The cpo warranty takes over once the original warranty expires and you can buy 2 more years of CPO. If you buy an MB at an MB dealer without the CPO, you can't buy the extended warranty. If you buy it at a non mb dealer that didn't get their car from an MB dealer, then you can buy the extended warranty. There are many differences but I believe one of them is that on the CPO, you can buy the 2 extra years and you can transfer it, but on the extended warranty, you can also get a refund for the unused part of it, but you don't get that with CPO.

I bought my 2010 e350 from an independent dealer. The car had 70k on it and I got an extended inclusive warranty from GWC for 3 years and 38,500 miles with $100 deductible for $1700. This was part of the negotiated deal from the dealer and it cemented the deal for me. I have already utilized it once for a windshield washer issue.

As mentioned above, when talked about an extended warranty, we're talking about the MB extended warranty, not a 3rd party one. The MB one is accepted nationwide at all MB dealers. The problem with 3rd party ones is that they sometimes tend to go out of business or give you a hard time on what's covered and what's not, although there are a few good 3rd party ones out there.

I read all of these and it still not clear to me. I just got a car from out of state. That dealer didn't offered any warranty as the car was in service on 12-29-2013 and now has 14k miles.
I believe MB cover it until 12-29-2017 or 50k miles. Do I have until 12-28-2017 to purchase an extended warranty plan from MB?
Sorry to be a duh. The service records are clean but I want to see if it develops any major problems before I purchase a plan.

If it's a V6 rwd, I wouldn't expect too many if any problems. If it's a 4matic, a transmission replacement will happen at some point.

Well it's a 4MATIC and I don't plan to rack up miles. Does low miles make a difference?

I'm not sure why you think that. I think some of the original transmissions in the early W211 era were bad, but they've changed them a few times that I don't think 7 speed 4matic has any history of being any worse than the RWD. But in general, the more parts you have, the more likely something will fail.

As for the guy who got his car from out of state: Was it an MB dealer or a 3rd party dealer? If it's an MB dealer, you can't buy the MB extended warranty. If it wasn't an MB dealer, then you can contact the guys mentioned in the extended warranty forum and give them the VIN and they will quote you a price on the extended warranty. It's cheaper if you buy it within 30 days of getting the car. Some only mark up the price by $100.

Same transmission as W220 7 speed?

Not from a MB dealer but it's a CPO car. Is that a thing?
