How long do oem shocks give good service?
My 2012 E350 RWD just turned over 40,000 miles. I really think the ride over bumps and potholes might not be as good as it used to be. It seems to bottom more easily. Of course the roads are always getting worse. But, I'm wondering if it's my imagination or if I should be looking into shock replacement. If I drove slow all the time I probably wouldn't be having this conversation.
Thanks for any feedback!

In New England, which has frost heaves and potholes, they may wear out after a few years, but should show signs of wear. It is possible however, that the suspension bushings have worn out instead, which allow more loose motion of things like locator arms, steering arms and the struts themselves.

I haven't had to replace shocks/struts in a couple of decades. Seems like they last forever now. We always have 2-3 vehicles and drive them 35-115K miles before getting rid of them. With the exception of our Range Rover's airbags cracking (they're prone to doing so), we've never had shock/strut issues. So they must typically last quite some time.

In over 20 years, I have only to to replace struts one time. That was on a 2010 Honda Pilot with 85k miles. I think a big contributor is how it was driven - someone in my family doesn't slow down for speed bumps. Honda covered most of the repair as goodwill.

In all the vehicles I have owned over the years I have never had to replace Struts. My son has 220,000 on his Acura and still has the original struts. Should last you as long as you have the car unless you abuse the car
