2014 E550 replacement key coming from Germany?

I'm looking at a 2014 E550 but the car dealership (not an MB dealership) that has it lost the only key so they have to get a replacement key. They had to tow the car to a nearby MB dealership to have the key made. It's now been over 2 weeks and no replacement key. The MB dealership said they had to order a key from Germany(!) and its being sent to them. They said something about "the blade" which I assume is the metal key being the problem.

Does this make sense? Shouldn't the MB dealership have programmable replacement keys on hand?

The keys are from Germany, but it shouldn't take 2 weeks- Mine took one day. I think you can only have 6 keys coded/cut for each VIN and they are very expensive (close to $500)

2014 E550-sold 😩
Extra key for my 2010 came from the regional facility in Texas. No programming necessary. I thought they did change it for newer models though.

Maybe that's how they got it so quickly. I know my 08 C300 Key was sent from Germany and it took a few days for that one.

I had a spare made and it only too a day. I believe I paid a little over $400.

What may be adding to the delay with mine is the key they lost was the only one they had so the dealership did not have the back up metal key to copy for the replacement key and had to send back to Germany for a copy of it. That sound plausible?

It also probably doesn't help that the non-MB dealership that has the car I'm looking at is in competition with the MB dealership that is making the key.

I understand that you're curious why it's taking so long. But, we here on the forum can't give you the real reason why. Only guesses. Even the dealer you're working with isn't giving you a complete answer/explanation. Hope it comes soon.
