Sorry to hear! I have a 2010 E550 with 126,xxx km on it! After reading this, i lost the urge to drive to the market to grab groceries. Guess instant noodles tonight. My build date is April of 2010.

Just got a call back.. They said I threw two rods. The service advisor said he has never seen this before in his career. He said he has to talk to the service manager about something MB corporate can do however isn't optimistic since I'm the second owner.
He said its upwards of 30k to fix the car. Its totaled...

This has oiling issue written all over it.
I'd ask to see the filter off the engine and any codes pulled from the ECU, at the very least.
Something failed and hopefully for you, it was a mistake at the dealership.
Good luck.

I'm going to be contacting corporate directly tomorrow however does anyone have any recommendations on any department or specific office to try and reach? I had to dump 5k into this car in October for them to perform a B service and replace the tires and motor/transmission mounts. I have about 30k stuck into this car already and I've only had it 11 months. I cant imagine even spending 10k more on it.

Thats what i was thinking , is this coincidence that it happened only 5 k miles after visiting the dealership , or it was there already , and it was just a matter of time......
yes , more detailed info would be useful , would be also nice to inspect engine bay to see what it looks like there , and of course CEL codes , if available...

Time to find an indy unless corporate can help you out. A used junkyard engine is in the $4-5k range. An indy is probably 1-2k to remove/install it.

This is devastating. I'm a grown **** man and this would almost bring a tear to my eye if it happened to me. Def. would have me throwing a Kanye level tantrum. Hopefully everything works out and there is some sort of relief from corporate.

Wow man, my stomach turned reading this. Absolutely brutal. I can see them charging that much for a new motor installed. Indy is the way to go, still will probably cost you almost $10k. Hopefully Mbenz will help you, if you can show service records they should do something I'd hope.
As a former insurance guy I can confirm as mentioned, this is not covered by your insurance. The only way engine damage is covered by insurance is vandalism, damage in a crash, or weather damage (ie: suck up water in and hydrolock an engine).

First - sorry to hear.
Second - I would see what a good used example cost. These engines were generally available in a LOT of cars above and beyond the E class. Don't forget to look for those models as well. Maybe find a wrecked car with lower miles.
For $30k you might as well buy a 2012/2013 with the bi-turbo

I assume when they say 30k that'll be for an engine with 0 miles on it. Anything you buy online or at the junkyard could have 100k miles or more for all you'll know. Plus I assume they're adding in the labor as well.

2014 E550-sold 😩
Well that sucks. You can buy a used 2010 E550 with those miles for $20K. I would not put a $30K motor in a $20K car. Sorry it happened to you! Good luck!

IF they don't help you out, use the site http://www.car-part.com. It's basically a search engine for salvage yards. There are some 8-11k mile 5.5L engines on there for 6k or less shipped. (Still a lot of money, but easier to stomach than dealer cost).
With zero warning leading up to the event, I'm really curious what happened. It doesn't make sense that no warning lights popped up. Hell it's hard to keep the dashes clear of them when nothing is wrong at all!
I really hope they can determine what caused this and take care of it for you.

The problem with the dealers is that generally if it's their screwup and they see the car first, that'll be the end of the evidence. Same thing if a Mercedes oil filter lost some chunks and the bits clogged the oil passages, and most won't look for it anyways.
For all you know, the oil plug fell out 15 minutes beforehand.
Local wreckers will have 272 engines around, and an indy shop should be able to sort you out if they have Mercedes experience.

There is a never ending list of scenarios that could have happened. It's not going to be easy, but the place to start looking is getting a copy of any stored codes, physically looking at oil filter, and inspecting the carnage. Problem is, as stated, it's in the hands of dealership and you'll need their cooperation.

At this point the dealer has basically removed themselves from helping me at all in this situation. They stated even to look at the engine they need to charge me the standard shop rate of 100/hr and said its unlikely they will find the root cause. At this point they have already stated they will not budge and are not even offering me 1-2k off the price of a new engine so I'm doubting I'll get anywhere with them.
I am still waiting to hear back from MB corporate as they have escalated a case and will respond back within 24 hours however I'm not confident. I'm going to store the car and look at my indy options as there is no way I'm ever stepping foot in Umansky Mercedes Benz of Milwaukee ever again. The service manager wouldn't even call me back today. I called him at 8:30, left a voicemail and then at 9:30, 11:30 and he finally answered around 2:00 PM but told me he had no news for me and MB confirmed on their end they were not covering it.
1800 miles exactly since the B service was performed. I even asked the guy if that sounded fishy since he was the one who said "I've never seen two rods go on a 5.5 V8 in my career" and he agreed but said they cant investigate it without someone footing the bill for labor.
Unless I receive any updates from MB Corporate I'm already in contact with a lawyer in regards to the short time between repair and total engine failure and will be in the search for an engine soon.
Thanks everyone for your kind words and help during this stressful situation. At least I know MBworld will never let me down..

Curious what the lawyer tells you. I'm one. The only thing in a B service relevant to this is an oil change. How can you screw up an oil change to throw rods? Somebody suggested missing O rings. But if it were some oil issue, I think it would have to be low oil pressure, and you would have had an indicator light. This is totally weird.

Subscribing to this thread, because I gotta know how this pans out. Were both rods on the same crank throw? If so, that could help to understand why this happened, if only generally.
Wishing you the best of luck.

First, sorry for the mess you are in. It's beyond sucky.
But I'm wondering how they know it threw a rod if they haven't looked at the engine? Is there a hole in the side of the block? What does the physical damage to the engine look like?
If I were you, I would engage the services of a good mechanic and get him to go with you to the dealership, unannounced and take a good look at the car and take plenty of pictures of the engine and the mechanic. Might even help to drag the service manager out with you. At this stage you are your own forensics team and need to gather any evidence that you still can, assuming the dealership hasn't done much with the car.
Concur with finding a used motor and having it put in if you cant get any help from MB corporate. You might want to remind the corporate bubbas that you talk to that this whole incident is being discussed online, and the how they treat you will be open for all to see.
