Got hit by the trunk lid
 

It sounds very funny but both I and my coworker who has the identical car experienced trunk lid closing while looking for something deep in the trunk. We must've moved our feet to trigger the closing mechanism. Is there a way to disable automatic closing temporarily? Should it be a bit smarter and detect that a person is in a way? Anyway the lid is pretty heavy and it's not fun when it hits you on your back or neck :)

I don't have an answer for you, but you deserve a lot of credit for stepping forward and sharing your story. You are the victim here. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Yes, people will ask why did you move your foot in a suggestive manner, what kind of shoes were you wearing, etc. - all in an effort to blame the victim and they should be ashamed of themselves. Vehicle-inflicted abuse is terribly under reported in this country. And I and many others stand beside with you in support... just not that close to your trunk.

I don't think it's funny. I got hit by mine the other day. The motor is very strong and it did take some effort to stop it. I was surprised at how much resistance it took especially when it hits you on the back of the neck or head. I am suffering from a back injury which will require surgery and let me say it wasn't a pleasant experience.

Am I understanding this correctly that the trunk lid also closes with the foot movement under the back bumper?

Yes. The trunk opens and closes when you sweep you leg across the sensor.

Definitely a design flaw. I understand opening with your leg, but what is the reason for closing with your leg? On mine you push the button in the lid and walk away. It's not like your hands are full of stuff.

That's exactly my thought too...why closing with the foot sweep...?

There have been times when my hands are full and sweeping the foot has been tricky but more convenient than reaching up for the button. I prefer the set up on my ML350- you can open and close the hatch from the key fob.

Let me clarify- My Back Injury was not the result of the Trunk closing.

What car do you drive ? What is the year and model ?

This could be a design flaw that was rectified because on my 2016 if there is anything or "anyone" in the way it will not close and if it is in the process of closing it will stop and go back up.

I feel your pain lol. I have a small dog that seems to really enjoy running under the sensor, whenever I'm close enough to trigger the trunk. I can't count the amount of times it has randomly popped open. But he's only managed to catch me with it once. I got a good laugh out of it after I figured out what had happened.

Pick up items from trunk. Hands full. Can't close trunk manually, normally. Can't push any button (fob or trunk lid) either. Sweep feet under bumper, trunk closed and locked. Therefore not a design flaw.

Maybe they should put the sensors closer to the corners (right behind the wheel) instead of in the middle?

Actually, it's the Russians, drinking Vodka from the Kremlin, saying "Alexa, close trunk lid..." while spying on u...

OK, now there's a scenario I'd have never predicted...LOL!
I am curious: so when the trunk ka-bonks you, does it stop, reverse, how much does it "want" to close on you? I'm asking because I don't want to try it myself :D

You can't do that anymore on new models? My 2010 only has the key fob trunk open button, I don't have the foot sweep thing, I don't even think it was available my year?

Edit: I can't close it from the key fob though, at least I haven't tried :B

Haha. I was detailing mine for the first time last weekend when the same happened to me. It really freaked me out for a minute until I realized what happened. This is the first car I've owned that has the foot sensor and it took me a minute to realize what has happening... Thought someone was trying to close the trunk on me.

Don't pick up so much stuff at one time maybe? My post was all sarcasm.

I have to put my key far away from my car when washing it or the car will lock unlock lock unlock and on if I go near the door handles while washing or drying. It's extremely annoying with keyless go.

Haha, don't worry! It'll give a relatively good "bonk":smash:, and probably piss you off for a few minutes, but that's the worst of it. It has a resistance sensor built in, so it'll hit, but it'll "feel" that and stop. Its not like a tesla, no need to worry about losing limbs :rolf::y
