I have never heard of a dealership, or any retailer, taking something out of inventory & holding it for a week---much less, over a month---with NO good faith deposit.

These salesmen must be Ghandis and Mother Theresas.

I'm saying this because I know how excited you are and don't want you to be disappointed if something goes awry. This has red flags all over it. If they aren't taking any REAL actions other than some words of trusting them (like a deposit to hold it) I'd be a bit anxious. If you are doing the paperwork tomorrow, why the month delay? I would have lost my E550 if I didn't have it because ANOTHER salesperson tried to sell it.

I sincerely hope you get the car - and I say these things so you don't lose it.

I hope it all works out for you. The only way a dealer will pull a car off inventory is if all of the paperwork is complete for purchase. At least in Illinois that is how it works. Why don't you simply wire a deposit?

I was doing the paperwork for mine and another salesman came to mine to ask for the keys so he could take a customer on a test drive, but it was a tad too late for that sucker.

Ha, yeah it's a free-for-all in any dealership. You sit there long enough and you see all kinds of action going on.

Very true... 20 minutes later, someone came in asking for my salesman's keys to a GL he just sold because that's the only one with certain features that his customers are looking for... and he gave them to him! "I don't like doing that, but he'll be careful"... just give me my car and let me run far, far away from this place!

I'm a fan of black, so it will be me buying it. But I'll leave behind a white e350. Only missing distronic, 360, split fold down, and low miles (22k)!

The guy I am dealing with leaves for vacation on Monday. I already have plans for tomorrow so we agreed to meet next Saturday the 6th. I asked him multiple times if he wanted a deposit and he said no, he would just pull it for me. So by next Saturday I will have a deposit and binding contract on the car before I leave. I have to go out of the country for work for the month of May so I can't pick it up until June 3rd.

Here is my exact email to him yesterday:

"Just want to make sure the car is pulled out of inventory while you are on vacation next week. Would hate for it to get sold by mistake while you are gone."

and his reply:

"Folder is in my desk, car is moved into the sold section on the computer, and it's written down in our log book. 100% out of inventory under your name.

I'll only be in (removed) next week so if you need anything I should still be able to get emails through my phone."

So I am pretty confident in this guy. 8 days and I will see.

Well it doesn't sound like you can do much other than get your butt there ASAP. In my experience, without a signed buyers order with a VIN on it and (in most cases) a deposit, you don't have any claim. Hope this guy locks his desk. Perhaps he is doing you a solid as a forum friend.

Considering they guy did me right by warning me about the shady dealer down in Florida and then HE contacted me about the E550 he had makes me think he is a stand up guy. Like others have said, maybe there are still some good people out there.

It's an MB dealership and I didn't know that at first, being as you were so hush hush. Ha, you'll be fine I'm sure knowing that.

I assume that means you're paying less then the $43k they have it listed for then. I doubt they price their cars for only $500 profit.

You might want to ask them to pull it off their website since we are talking about at least a week before anything is signed. Looks nice though. Congrats.

Very exciting, but be careful. Consider writing the stealer a small good faith check to hold your unicorn. If you don't buy it after inspecting it, you'll get your dough back.

<><><><><><><><>

When I bought my wife's car, it already had a "sold" sign on the windshield. It was allegedly being held for a "buyer," but the stealer got tired of waiting for them to complete the deal. When I mentioned to my salesman that it was the color combo that I was after, she said she'd be right back and the rest is history.

Oh, and M278! I agree that it's delightfully nasty (and like you said, I can only imagine what it's like to drive an E63!).

If one has a strong BS Detector, you can discern the difference between a stealership, or a dealership. I think the OP deserves the benefit of a doubt here, along with the dealership as far as honoring the deal.

A small deposit goes two-ways. Why chance missing out on the unicorn? Why leave it chivalry?

Ask a salesmen if buyers are liars! If you've ever attempted to sell stuff online, I don't think it's a stretch for me to say that some prospective buyers don't follow through with their "promises." Sellers are in the business of selling and money in hand talks.

Update:

So I have been nervous all week because of the things people posted here about dealers not holding a car for someone without a contract or deposit. So I emailed the guy I am dealing with who just got back from vacation and here is his response:

"Car is still here and still under your name, nobody else can sell it. I asked one of the valets to pull it under our canopy since it looks like rain tomorrow. I'll be in tomorrow at 9am so just ask for me when you come in and I'll see you then"

OMG I am like a kid on Christmas Eve. Leaving at 9:00am tomorrow

When you go for the test drive push the S button and find a nice straight section of road and hammer it. Then try to hold on to that feeling for the 30 days you two will be separated. Enjoy and have a great day!

No, no, no.....here is the best thing......If all goes well with my meticulous inspection, I will do the paperwork and put a deposit down tomorrow and pick it up in 2 weeks. Work schedule got changed so I am sticking around the states but still can't officially pick it up until the 20th of this month.

But that is still too long of a wait.

OP as everyone has said before, no buyer order, no deposit, sometimes means no deal. When you do get there, you absolutely must get it on a lift to see underneath it before you buy. I would also avoid having them hold onto it for weeks after you buy it, anything can happen to that car until you get it home and post sale you own any problems.

Another thing to look out for, this vehicle was auctioned and then it sat in inventory for two months. I noticed a lot of well optioned vehicles especially at this dealer having that situation, so either it is a financial quirk (something to do with lease residuals) or for whatever reason they could not CPO it immediately. Anyone else wants to weigh in here?
