Embarrassing moment with Park Mode

I just pulled into a parking lot with my friends in the car, I put it in Park Mode(turned off the car), and was talking to them, and removed my foot off the brake, after a few seconds the vehicle started rolling backwards and I didn't notice, sice, there are no visible stationary objects in my point of view. Luckily, I noticed and applied the brakes, and noticed, the vehicle is in Neutral, not Park. Fortunately, there are no cars/traffic around either.

The loaner vehicle, which I got the other day, 2017 C300, goes into park, when I turn off the engine(with a key, not push button start).

Anyway, lesson learned, need to be more careful.

rant begin..
BTW, MB in the latest firmware upgrade, changed the 360 camera view to max of 10mph, rather than 17mph(which it used to and very useful); why not link 'park' to engine shut off?
rant over..

thanks for your patience.

This still happens to me on occasion. Hate that nervous panic feeling when it happens in parking lots near other cars. Worst was when I was adjusting a shoe and wasn't even looking up - probably rolled 5 feet before I noticed and had to restart the car to move back into the spot.

My Toyota with keyless used to engage park right when the car was turned off. Still not used to the MB way.

BMW does that, when the we turn off the engine, it goes to park.
Even 2017 Mercedes does that, which is a firmware update..!

BTW, one more thing;
Lock the car from inside, without pulling the unlock pin(on the top), just use this door open lever.
The doors gets unlocked for front doors, but for the rear, they won't open, unless you manually use the unlock pin.

Door open Lever:

Is that normal?

haha, we are getting so lazy, we don't even want to manage the gears in an automatic transmission. Q: What did we do on cars 15 years ago, when we wanted to park? A: We actually manually shifted it to PARK.

What next, voice-activated shifting? Bluetooth driving?

I'm not even asking new feature, the same one your BMWs have and the newer Mercedes has..!
I believe it is a safety feature.

That's just the thing...the car automatically going to Neutral (or, in the case of my BMW, Park) is merely a convenience feature, and should only be regarded as such.

The point I was making, bro, is that it shouldn't be looked at as a safety feature or a necessity...I was making a joke that for ages we have been required/ingrained to shift to Park prior to turning off the engine. Why should that responsibility be taken away from us now?

That would almost be like saying the car is lacking a safety feature because it doesn't avoid running over pedestrians.

I wouldn't need it, if the shifter is not electronic, as you mentioned it is ingrained.
But, if it is an electronic like this, and we have to check the screen for confirmation, that is a different story, right?
Again, I don't turn off the car though; I out it in Park, and did not notice it didn't go through, but, I turned off the car, as the passenger is getting ready to get down.
Instead, she kept on chatting, then we noticed, that the vehicle didn't go into park.

You already know the front driver door, but did you know, opening the passenger door in the front, makes the car into park(certain speed), not the rear doors.

Anyway, can you check and verify the other feature I was talking about(post #3). Regarding the central locking system, for rear doors. Is it supposed to do like that?

Similar thing happened to me yesterday.
I was parking in a very tight spot where I had to get the car as close to a barrier as possible so not to block traffic, so I couldn't get out on the drivers side.
I turned the car off (with park enabled), climbed out the passenger side and tried to lock the car.
I couldn't. The music kept playing, even though the car was off and I couldn't get the thing to stop. I hit the FOB, the door handle button. Nope.

Then finally I thought to open and close the driver side door and that worked. I could finally lock the car and stop the music from playing.

I will try to check...but I am never in the backseat alone, lol, so hard for me to test it.

I guess the car still thinks that you are in the car (since you didn't exit from the driver's door) and wants to prevent you from getting locked inside the car.

Yep , learned that a long time ago... and i kinda like it this way , but sometimes it is annoying that you have to open the door to completely shut if down so you could lock it...oh well..

Me neither, until yesterday and it is so weird, but spacious, and comfortable too, lol.

Haven't tried the back seat but will. Did you check to see if the child lock is enabled?

I checked the ChildLock, both of them are in unlocked position and there are other people who sat in the back seat before, but either never got down before the front passenger* or they just used the unlock stick on the top of the door.

*When the front passenger opens the door, all the doors get unlocked, in my car;

For some reason, I still have it embedded in my head that the rear seats of a W210 has more room than a W211 or W212. Must be the nostalgic moments of riding in my parent's car, lol.

I am not sure why MB changed the rear door "policy"---they used to open fine in 2009 and earlier. On the other hand, you have to quickly pull the door handle twice to open in my BMW (safety feature to prevent inadvertently falling out of the vehicle); have you tried that?

I'll try that.
As per head room, I'm 5'7", and I won't others drive my car, so, I'm not worried about it lol.

Really? that is a design flaw? without even trying the other door, we thought it is not working, due to some latest firmware update or whatever.

Anyway, that feature is a bit odd.

Thanks for checking for me. I actually thought of making an appointment with the SA.

Hey just remove the rear door lock pins and you can hold someone captive. Would be handy for taxi and uber drivers. Maybe that's why MB does it that way since they are popular taxi models overseas.

I will have to check my Honda to see how the back seat door locks work on that one.

ha ha, basically that was part of the embarrassing moment, as I met the back seat passenger for the first time
1. Vehicle rolled in park; my mistake.
2. back door didn't open automatically, but I told him, we need to unlock it first, to open the door. Moreover, the unlock pin is far away from the door opener..!
