two brake related questions (picture)

hey guys looking for some advice.

1. There is some pitting or discoloration, on my calipers, i attached a picture. Didnt really want to get them painted, so i figured i would ask before trying to clean it. What solvent would you try?

2. I've had an ongoing squeak/rattle that i can hear with the windows down when i hit bumps on the road. The guys at the dealership said it was a front brake part system that was shifting because the brake pads are getting low. Does this sound right to you guys? anyone experience a similar issue? they offered to do pads and rotors for $900 :smash:

any advice welcomehttps://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mbw...77e9d69c82.jpg

That looks like minor surface corrosion. Xylol may remove it but it may need to be scraped off. Either way I think that the surface will be blemished.

After many miles the pads may get a bit loose even with the retaining clips. There's a slight air gap between pad and rotor when not braking so that's when you may hear something. But typically should not be anything rattling, maybe give them a look yourself using a rubber mallet.

I'd just do a pad slap after measuring the rotor thickness. Lots of threads on here about people getting a second set of pads out of the rotors before having to replace them. You can get a set of Akebono pads for about $80 on Amazon depending on your year and model which we don't know about. Takes me about an hour to an hour and half to do them or just find some indy to do it, there's nothing special about changing the pads/rotors, should only be around $50-$100 for labor.

would you guys say that looks like pitting or rust? I ask because I figured rust would show as a copper color and not white/gray. I will look into xylol, i would rather avoid having to paint them
