2011 E350 transmission service cost

Was just quoted $915 from dealer for routine transmission service on my 2011 E350 sedan. That price is for nothing else... just the transmission service. Local independent shop that deals with German cars quoted $375. Any explanation that you can think of?

Both quotes were over the phone so no details. I'm assuming that independent quote was for dropping the pan, new filter, gasket and fluids. Does the dealer typically do something beyond this for every 40K transmission service?

Wow. Back at 30k transmission service (still under 60k currently) my dealer charged about 325 for filter and fluid change.
That 900+ cost seems absurdly high

My local MBZ dealer in SoCal was $400 with a coupon. Normal dealer MSRP in SoCal is $499.99 (excluding CLA/GLA for some reason). MB Encino has a $449.99 coupon. $900 is insane. $375 sounds right.

Dealer near me was $460 last time I checked for ATF. $915 is a ripoff.

on my e350 bluetec '12, at an independent mechanic who i use and trust.
trans fluid. torq converter flush, rear differential fluid, engine oil service and it was less than 900 bucks...and he got his parts FROM The mb dealership.
sorry i cant find the actual invoice right now.... to itemize the exacts. i did it at 58k miles. was in line with what the other folks have reported.

What's the mileage? For those that go to the dealer, if it's the 80k service, you could probably buy the 3 pack pre-paid maintenance as long as the car has under 80k. Probably around $1500 and if it needs the transmission or spark plugs, it's included. You'd have to check for vendors in the extended warranty sub-forum.

Sad thing is that most pay these absurd prices and never get the torque converter flushed.

i got my transmission fluid changed 40k miles at local MB dealership for 375. they did not do the torque converter either but i asked them about it and they said they would for free but didnt recommend it. i ended up just not doing it a second time for just the torque converter.

Would you change half your oil?

If you only changed half the oil, do you think the engine would only last half as long?

That's basically the procedure by the manufacturer to change the transmission fluid. Seems like the MB forums are somewhat obsessed about getting every drop out, but it shouldn't really matter. Had a previous car where I just changed the fluid with just a pan drop and filter change, never did the torque converter, still got over 200k out of the car before the rest of it started to fall apart. Maybe if you change the fluid in the torque converter the car will last a million miles instead of 500k, but if you just plan to keep it to 200 or 300k, it probably doesn't matter.

That’s a puzzling analogy and that is not a manufacturer procedure but ok. I would rather change all my oil at intervals instead of paying for half. But if it works it works. Great deal for the dealers

Yeah, lots of other things like that could be puzzling. Like if you're scared half to death, how many times can you be scared half to death? And afterwards, are you half dead?

MB dealer $800, indy shop $600. I called around a lot, too.

I also have a 2011 E350, mine's a diesel but same transmission.

For me this was at 120,000 miles.

My regular indy said he couldn't do the service, as there's no dipstick and the fluid has to go in at a specific temperature; he doesn't have the tools. He also said every other car he deals with does tranny service at 60K intervals, not 40k

I wonder why both my Mercedes cars have a drain plug on the torque converter...

I've seen a couple of Youtube videos on servicing 212 transmissions that show the torque converter drain plugs and how to incorporate them into the service routine. Maybe this link will be useful.
