Power Steering Fluid - 2011 E350 4Matic

I gave the dealer parts department my VIN and they gave me Hydraulic Oil Q 1 32 0001, even though I said it took the MB Power steering fluid. A couple guys at the parts counter insisted that my car takes the Hydraulic Oil. I think they are wrong. Thoughts?

On the can, it says Pentosin CHF 11S. That is the correct Power Steering oil to use (Pentosin is the company that makes the oil, the can is rebranded with Mercedes logo).

I believe you could also used Prestone European power steering fluid. It's about $5 at Walmart, more like $12 at Advance Auto and Autozone although it's not on the approved list. They also sell a liter of Pentosin Chf 11s, but it's about $26-$27 and you probably don't need that much for a top up.

Thanks for all the replies. So is the owner's manual just wrong?

Apparently the fluid that comes with the car can vary so check your VIN. It took my about 3 days to figure out what my car was using. Here is my saga and the bottom line: https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...ing-fluid.html

So I called a few more dealer parts department. A couple of them didn't even ask for model of car - once I said 2011 they said pentosin. One explained that pentosin is kind of their go-to PS fluid now and most of the cars come with it. If the car came with regular PS fluid, he said you can add pentosin and it won't hurt it (guess mixing fluids is debatable), but if the car came with pentosin you don't want to add regular fluid.

The gold star goes to the one guy who asked for my VIN (only one who did) and he said that my car came with the regular PS fluid, not pentosin and that I should use the same kind. $9 a bottle.

Thanks for posting that! I did not see a marking on my cap, which had me thinking all along that it takes the regular stuff. My car does not have any of the fancy hydraulics, so I think the unlabeled cap, the owner's manual and your thread have helped me to come to the conclusion that I need the MB Power Steering Oil.

So here's a question - does anybody have a W212 that says CHF11S or similar on the PS cap?

So, i called another dealership. They did NOT take my VIN and said it took the Pentosin. I finally decided to call MBUSA. They took my VIN and talked to a product expert and he looked up my car from manufacturing data. They came back and recommended MB Power Steering Fluid. So, to anybody facing this dilemma, I think the definitive answer is to call MBUSA with your VIN and talk to a "product specialist"

Think you should be fine to top up with the plastic bottle. I don’t remember exactly, but I read that the ATF based PS fluid is the cheaper alternative and works fine. However the Pentosin (green liquid) is a synthetic liquid that will perform as well and is better lifetime for the seals in the rack - as ATF base MAY degrade seals over time. I think this was from debate on the w211 forum. Sorry I don’t have a reference for you.

I am definitely going with the plastic bottle stuff. Just ordered a bottle on Ebay for $15.

I actually have a full bottle of the CHF11S stuff left over from when I changed the fluid on my BMW

I used this exact one on my 2010 E550 a few thousand miles back and everything is working fine, nothing blew up.
