tilt wheel stopped working - 2014 E350, 2wd
Hi All and Happy New Year,
Seems my tilt wheel stopped working. It goes in and out, but not up and down. Makes a, "trying-to-work" click. That's all. Clues? Fuse? Paper-clip reset hole? f-d |
give it a tug while hitting the switch

Happened to my 2013 E350 last year. Took it to dealer and they had to replace the whole power steering wheel motor. They said it's a common problem. some plastic piece inside gets broken and jams it from moving up/down.
Don't know exact cost because it was covered under extended warranty. Service adviser said it was well over $1k for parts and labor. |
thanks you both! Hate the sound of big repair$!

I had this happen, and had it fixed under warranty. The actual writeup on the service report that the dealer actually had the gall to give me was "customer states steering wheel will not move in up/down direction. Found motor jammed up. Hit motor with hammer. Steering wheel operating properly now".
To his credit, it HAS been working fine for a few months now..... |
Seems a quirk! Used the fully-out and tug method and it's now working! Such a fun forum!

I had the same issue and the tug worked. Are you in a cold climate ? I am in Chicago area and I think it is tied to cooler weather. I do not recall the issue in the summer.
|
Dealer replaced that motor on my 2014 E350 under warranty, when the car was less than 3 years old.
I live in a climate where summer is over 100F / 35C for months and winter almost never goes below 32F / 0C. |
Mine happened in the middle of July.
|
I'm in Virginia and it hasn't seemed too cold? I've only had the car since July. So glad the tug method worked! Seems a quirk in the model, eh?
Thanks to all for the tips! f-d |
I doubt it's a quirk. Your gear is probably failing. Eventually it will go belly up.
|
^^^This. I'm harboring no illusions that mine will one day fail completely. When it does, I'll just take it in under warranty again. If the warranty is coming close to being up, I'll just say that the problem is happening "intermittently" and I want a new motor based on the last tech hitting mine with a hammer.
|
I doubt it is a gear issue. Most likely just a bit of a tight gear train the motor has trouble overcoming at times. Motor is likely on the small side.

This forum is AWESOME!
+1 Tug method (all the way out and tug while hitting up/down) fixed problem for $0 |
