I got my 2013 E350 from its previous owner on January 30. On January 29 he brought it to the dealer for a PPI and they completed the service campaign and did an alignment.
Received a notice to bring car in to replace bolts on the steering rack under service campaign #2019080019. Said salt could corrode bolts. I do not drive the car in winter. do I still have to bring it in?
By all means DO have the bolts replaced.. Mercedes had an NHTSA RECALL on their Metris Vans in Canada and the northern US to correct this same problem. They also recalled other vehicles with similar steering assemblies, but only in Canada. They seemed to have decided to handle the northern US vehicles by means of a "service bulletin". We have a 2015 ML-350 and did NOT receive a letter. (We live in NE Pennsylvania). As we no longer use a Mercedes dealer for maintenance we never learned of the service bulletin. The bolts on our vehicle failed catastrophically, which effectively disabled power steering. Fortunately, this occurred in our driveway when I started the car and began backing out of the driveway. Had it occurred 15 minutes later, I would have been driving 65 to 70 mph on the interstate and the result might well have been a fatality!!!!! Upon researching what happened I found the recall information but only just found the "Service Bulletin". Due to snow and COVID, the vehicle has sat in the driveway, but I will now be contacting Mercedes and HOPEFULLY they will do the repairs at their cost. If not, I will be contacting the NHTSA, as NOT recalling the vehicles (other than the Metris vans) in the US is severely negligent and a recall should have been initiated.
As an engineer experienced in corrosion and mechanical assemblies, to have use ALUMINUM bolts in a steel assembly, failure of which could result in severe injury or a fatality, is unbelievably poor engineering judgment. If any employee of mine had done this, I would have fired him or her immediately.
ANYONE AFFECTED BY THIS ISSUE SHOULD HAVE THE BOLT REPLACEMENT DONE ASAP. Failure to have this design flaw corrected could be FATAL!
Just called my nearest dealer, referenced the service campaign number and provided my VIN, and couldn't find anything for my vehicle. A tad confused on that. Onto call another dealer to confirm whether I am included in the campaign or not.
I have a copy of the notice, but I can't find a transmittal letter. (It's been almost a year.) I haven't bothered with this during the Pandemic, cause I don't want any strangers in my car. But now that me and my family are fully vaccinated, I have it on my list to call the dealer in the next month or so.
Second MB dealer here in Denver actually looked into it for me and confirmed with tech. I'm not included in the campaign either. I received a letter somewhere, but I probably left it in 2020.
