Front passenger window regulator broke, how much?
 

Just got this 2011 E350 two weeks ago (75K miles) and the window regulator broke. The window is stuck about 4 inches open. The motor appears fine so it must be the regulator which online don't seem too expensive. Anyone know what to expect if I take to dealer for repair?

Expect it to be pricey since they have to remove the door panel to access the regulator. What makes you think the motor is fine?

There is a chance that the window could have come out of its clamps, although might result in the window falling down into the door. Was there any event like trying to roll it down when frozen?

Unfortunately the inner door panel is riveted to the outer and must be removed to replace the window regulator. This is a good amount of labor. If you’re interested in trying to do it yourself I can pull the procedures out of WIS for you later.

This is exactly what happened with an older BMW 5 series of mine. There was a vapor barrier that I had to remove to access the clamps to re-tighten them to the window but all in all, it was not very difficult and beats paying the stealer.

Yes CCWW I would like to possibly try that. Dealer is quoting now around $1400

It could just be what you said about coming out of the clamps since I can tug on the window and pull it up about an inch but it just falls back down.

Go to an independent mechanic that specializes in Mercedes. There are plenty in Los Angeles. It could be half that at an indy shop.

Well I talked to independent MB shop they are down to $900. Good news is car dealer I bought from is willing to help deal with this since I had car only 2 weeks. They are sending me to "car glass" guy who does this everyday. Go tomorrow. Will let you know what they quote.

can you run a drill and a rivet gun? it's not hard, just takes a couple hours time. you can get the regulator off ebay for about $50, I have one in my car, it is almost identical to the stock one. Everything I could find said you have to remove the inner metal panel on the door, but you don't. You can drill out the 3 rivet for the main door speaker, drill out the large rivets for the regulator, unbolt the motor and fish the regulator out the speaker hole. WARNING: METAL INSIDE SPEAKER MOUNTING HOLE IS VERY SHARP AND IT WILL CUT YOU. TAKE PRECAUTIONS TO PROTECT YOUR ARM/HAND AND BE CAREFUL.

you'll need a regular small rivet gun, a really big "body" type rivet gun, a drill and bits, and the proper sized rivets

OK so happy ending. Car glass guy only charged me $160 and he fixed it perfect with new regulator. Glass had fallen all the way into door. He said he would get the remaining money from car dealer so total price I'm sure was around $320.

Lesson learned here is go with local people that do that kind of job everyday. This place was kind of in the hood. They knew how to take door panel off, get the new part and fix all done within 3 hours.

Hello! These documents are great! Do you happen to have the one to remove/replace the aluminum door panel that has the regulator attached to it and are willing to share it? That would be of great value to me! I think 16.3.10 that you provided refers to it as the 'door modulel'.

I already replaced just the regulator part but something went wrong. The window still makes an awful sound when it goes down as if the wire in the regulator has gone off track again. So, I decided to just do it properly and replace the entire door module this time. I have the part already, but would appreciate the proper removal/install document, as I can't find any youtube videos where the entire door module is replaced, just the regulator piece.
