D1S Gen3 - LED vs HID is it really true??? how can this be!!!
Well I finally went and did it -
For the past year - I have been in search of the best way to get more light from our D1S setup - Even tried to use the new Morimoto D1s S 50W setup with little to no luck (also working my around the canbus system - that is a pain to trick.
I had been poking around - and watch many videos on LED bulbs just never been able to live up to ID bulbs..
But I finally bite the bullet and pulled the trigger and bought a Set of D1S - LED - plug and play - yes - plug and play - built in Canbus decoders!!!
My current bulb setup are the Osram Cool Blue Boost - which I feft game me the best color and brightness vs the night breaker...
Well - easiest to show you the picture - figured Id try one to compare each side...
No photo tricks -
Yup CBB is on the left and LED is on the right!
Great cut off line - and Lux meter also confirms what the picture shows....very good size hot spot - no blinding on-coming traffic
Instant on - great white color.
if anyone even cares - you can hear the fan running on the bulb but not when inside the car!
Time will tell if they last - but for the price so far - I'm beyond happy with the upgrade!
Cheers

I feel the throw is as good (if not better and brighter) I think to the HIDs I (at least I think so)
Also I noticed that road signs also seem to reflect better too - like a whiter white ?
Here is a wet night shot from my wifes ML 550 with one in - ..its hard to capture good pictures - Im trying not to over expose or finagle any shots - I just wanna show what I see...
LED is on the passenger side (can you seemy Pug in the middle LOL)
LED is on the Right side
I actually also think the cut off is actually better than the CBBs...

I didn't complaint about Mercedes-Benz headlamps but there's always a room for upgrade as well.
Nice work , thanks for sharing

I guess I just have really good eyes. I have never wished I had brighter headlights, not even on my 1970 Chevy pickup.

You've never driven an '87 jeep with little 5x7 sealed beam headlamps. A handful of candles with a polished chrome dish behind 'em to focus the light.
I replaced those sealed beams with some JW Speaker LED lights, and the '87 Jeep is considerably brighter and more focused than my '13 ML350. They weren't cheap and they are worth every penny.

Can you link to the specific model you purchased? I would like these for my Dad's W212 with xenon lights.

Having trouble finding these and am wondering why the OP didn't just share a simple model number or link....?
Edit: A reverse image search comes up with these:

Lots of reviews stating these bulbs die within less than a year, which is a shame. Why is that basically everything you buy today is just disposable chinese ****? From appliances to furniture to tools to parts, it's all just garbage designed to fleece you. Even modern Mercedes are just tablets on wheels built to impress Chinese.

Hi all - I agree and saw he reviews on the longevity too - however for an extra 5 bucks I got a 3 year no questions asked replacement or refund if the vendor happens to "vanish"
So far a month later - and my lights come on almost every time I drive the car - so far no issues on both my E550 or ML550...so 4 bulbs for a month - is a good start...
I did look to see if Osram or Philips made them - but not yet...
I have to admit - I love the color and instant on too - esp nice if you want to just flash your high beams - there is no warm up time which helps people to see you!
Anyways - so far for the money is much cheaper even if Ihave to replace every year plus if Gen 4 comes out with the way LEDs are advancing...
And I'm comfortable with my new LEDs so if anyone is interested in some used D1S HID bulbs as below if anyone interested..Im looking to sell them...
All D1S (in my search for the best bulb)

Hi
Still love them - still same bulbs - no issues at all - I too also purchased a W166 - ML550 - had them in in the first week - no issues at all. with any of them - (SO much easier to replace in the W166 via the panel in the wheel well)
Include 3 other friends with D1S bulbs - I joke about putting back in the HID bulbs - and threaten me (in a joking manner) to not touch them
Cheers - let me know or post what you think if you do pull the trigger

That's great to hear! I ordered a set of these:
They have very high reviews, I'm super interested to see how they perform.
Did you have any beam pattern issues? Pics of the before/after? on the W166

No issues with beam pattern - they cut off the same as OEM HIDs - I can take a picture later tonight of them when its dark out - But Ill bet you will have them installed by now?
its hard to capture everything like your real eyes will...Im pretty sure you will be happy with light output \ pattern and color...
Cheers

Thanks for the update, I do have mine installed. Runs great so far.
Sorry, I know this is a W212 forum but here's a comparison pic:
LED D1S on Left vs. Morimoto D1S HID on the right:

Thinking about doing this mod but have a couple of concerns. First off might there be any detrimental effects to active curve functioning using these bulbs and secondly, in another thread about this LED swap someone mentioned you could hear a slight fan noise when they're on. Thanks for the input.
