Rear exterior door handle hard to open

Hello MB World,

Lately my 2011 E350 Wagon rear left exterior door handle have been hard to open.
It still works but requires a lot of force to open.

Any body knows what is the potential cause to this problem and what would be the fix?

Thanks.

Can you figure out if this is...
  • the door hinges or
  • the door latch ??

Any past body repairs for collision?

no collision, the door is perfectly aligned, it's the handle mechanism which seems problematic.

Have to figure out how the handle works.

Looks like theres an arm on the handle that operates some type of cam that pulls on the lock cable. From photos of used handles it looks like the spring is greased where it meets the cable. Can check to see if thats properly greased or if its rusted.

The cable itself may be binding inside.

May have water penetrating into that door mechanism causing rust or corrosion. Hard to say without opening it up and inspecting.

Can always pull on the handle and spray some penetrating fluid all inside seeing if it works its way in there and frees up anything binding. A silicone spray would be the safest with plastic and rubber components. Though I cant see a little liquid wrench doing much harm.

Inspect the lock where it latches to the door frame. See if that is operating freely or binding.

Photos below are taken at random so may be of a right or left handed door.
