Glad the new E lost the fake vents on the rear bumper. Also glad that the luxury version looks just as good as the sport version. I've seen some C class luxury cars without the sport package and they look incomplete with very odd proportions.

Yeah, in profile the C is a stubby little thing. Wheel design and high offset don't help. Also the way the C pillar is behind the rear wheel wells and the trunk is barely there (visually...it has a nice sized trunk in actuality. The S has the opposite problem, trying to make a stretched wheel base look shorter and sportier. The E gets it just right.

There is very little talk about the newer inline 6 introductions and how that would proliferate into other models in Mercedes lineup. It almost seems to be wasteful to introduce the 3.0 turbocharged V6 for only one year, only to have it replaced by a newly developed inline 6.

Are we sure it's getting the TTV6? Although really, a first model year plus a new engine design might not be a recipe for happiness, especially if the wobbly 2015 C launch was any indication.

Most of the car sites are indicating that the new E will receive an inline 6 and the nine speed. The biggest reason was that this design is modular and could be used for 3, 4, 6, and 8 cylinder designs. The economies of scaling was needed to keep in line with competitors.

Yeah I read that somewhere. So is the 213 shipping with the TTV6 to start?

One thing that no one has mentioned yet is how will the W213 drive? If it handles anything close to the C class or the CLS, it will be a big step up.

What I'd like to see in this new model would be a clear differentiation in standard features from what is available from competitors and even from lower models from within Mercedes. Remote start with automatic heating or cooling(seats and steering wheel too), acoustic glass, heated and cooled seats, rear passenger sunshades, and obviously keyless go should have always been standard.

If the C is an indication, the E will come with 5 years of MBrace, with remote start via cell phone app, free. MB will never allow accessories like seat heaters/ventilators to run without human intervention and even then they're timed. But if you're remote starting, a couple minutes of run time will have the temp of the seats and everything else optimal before you ever get in the car. I have it on my S and I use it often. (Just leave climate control in Auto).

Keyless go will likely be part of the P1 package, but not standard. Sun shades will likely be a stand alone option.

The C definitely did not get acoustic glass or infrared glass like my S has. It depends on if the E is essentially a 3/4 scale S, or a stretched and widened C. From a marketing standpoint a scaled down S for half the money would be a disaster for S sales. That car needs to stay exclusive. So I think you'll see a larger C in the E, which is not a bad thing. The C is a beautifully driving and handling car, but a bit cramped.

The S class is not being cross shopped with any model in Mercedes line up. Someone looking at the S class would not consider an E class based the exclusivity and panache the S brings.

I've driven S Class exclusively since 2007. My 2010 is the third. I don't care about the panache as much as I do the ride quality and amenities. Up until now, you could only get that level of refinement in an S.

If the difference between an S and an E boils down to more rear leg room and a V8, I'll gladly cross shop the E.

MB certainly should avoid the situation. Too many people want to cut S class line.

You are suggesting that these cars are all on the same platform?
I assure you they are not. The W201 and the W124 are totally different cars in terms of track width and wheelbase as was the W112. I have driven all three on the autobahn and I can tell you they are different as night is to day.
I had 2 W124s and I can tell you, the W112 was not W124.

I if I wanted a C class I would buy one. Buying and E on a C platform is a waste of my money.

rip Mercedes class differentiation

Call it ego or call it what you will, some e class guys/gals choose the e class because it's more of a statement than the c class... And so on with s class etc

I'm not sure what the answer is but I don't think it'll cause me to shop Lincoln in this lifetime ... No offense. I just have nothing in common with Matthew mcconaughey... What is he even saying in those Lincoln commercials??
I marvel at how Mercedes has abandoned its heritage in design. With the exception of the new S class any design elements that connect to the past are gone.
The classic grill, the hood star etc. have been abandoned in favour of this original Taurus look alike with a nose that looks like the proboscus of some ancient animal.
BMW moves its designs around but you are never in doubt about what it is. It is always a variant on the double kidney.
I think the new cars are ugly for the most part, look very common and they rely on gimmickery for sales.

According to your signature, you are driving a CLA45 AMG. It does not have the "classic grill, hood star, etc." that you apparently like so much. Yet, you harshly criticize the Sport versions of the new W205 and W212/213 with the three-pointed star in the grill - exactly what your CLA45 AMG has !!!

Then, you mentioned that you wouldn't spend money on an E built on the C Class platform - presumably this was a reference to the new W213. Well, your Hungarian produced CLA is built on a B Class FWD platform !

Sharing of platforms between different models has become very common with most manufacturers, e.g. VW Golf/Euro Passat, BMW 3/4 Series, MB B Class/CLA, C Class & E Class, etc.

You should re-think our comment. The platform has nothing to do with models anymore.

Moving forward, Mercedes will only have 2 platforms (MFA & MRA) and all cars will be built on these. Same with BMW (UKL & OKL) and other brands.

So the C-Class and the new E-Class have the MRA platform and so will be the S-Class.

Platforms are now completely modular and have nothing to do with these ancient Mercs mentioned here.

Oh, btw. seeing these three old MB's next to each other I find them as similar looking from the front as the current C, E & S-Class. Not the same but quite close from a distance
