Can't find clear answer: does the US get E400?

Just what it says in the title—I can't find a straight answer as to whether the E400 will be coming to the US?

No. at least not for the 2017 model year.

Your choices are just the E300 and the E43 a little later

Nuts. Wouldn't mind something slotted between the turbo 4 and a semi-AMG. Thanks for the info.

That is very strange. The E400 is available in Canada.

Not sure what MBUSA is smoking, but not having the E400 is a glaring omission IMO. I think the entire E-Class lineup will change again for 2018 when the new I6s come online. The E300 will remain the same, but the E400 will get a new I6 with about 367hp and the E43 will become the E55 with 490hp. That is what the rumors are now. Thing is the E400 is needed NOW. I know MBUSA has to see this, so I'm hoping they're smarter than that and they have something else planned for early next year. They have to see this because they're offering the E400 wagon here next year! No way was the only wagon going to be a 4-cylinder! I can see 2018 being: E300, E400, E55 and E63. 241hp to 612hp.

The E400 is exactly what I want. Decent power (Drove the 2L in the C300, not what I am looking for) and RWD.

Keep in mind the E400 offered is with the current V6tt. Maybe the I6 would conflict with V6 during the same model year, knowing the legal ramifications in the US with some vulture law firms.

My wife is waiting until next Spring to order the E400 I6 4M Cab for delivery in Sept. 2017. I was told the 4M is coming to the Cab and that is good news for us in the great white north.

That has nothing to do with it. Car marker aren't bound by any laws as to what engines to sell from year to year. They can sell an I6, V6, etc all at the same time.

2022 Mercedes EQS 580
Mercedes is completely ****ing up the launch of this car with only the 4 cylinder. They should at least have launched with an E300 and E400. They should skip the E43 (from what I can tell it's going to have a super short life given delayed launch, and timing of upcoming I6 engine). Instead of e43, just go straight to the 490hp E55 along with the 600hp E63.

But launching the car without a 6 cylinder model, when the best selling car of the current gen is the E400 is just dumb.

I asked my dealer what they are pitching to people rolling off E400 leases, and he said that most want another 6 cylinder, so to these people they are pitching the C43. This indicates some degree of the problem they face.

It may matter if they change the engine midyear. Same model year, same price and a lesser propulsion system would cause some dissatisfaction and we all know that is all the reason the legal system needs for a lawsuit in the USA.

Canadians are not as litigious and we are getting an E400 3.0L V6TT and you are not. Draw your own conclusions.

It is a naked money grab. Nothing else pure and simple. USA is Mercedes biggest market.

It is like in the old days when Porsche would come out with a Turbo S or GTS 3 to 4 years late in the 911 product cycle

These S and GTS models were simple to use up all the inventory parts that customers didn't buy by fully optioning their cars with silly options like power kits, ceramic brakes, sound system, forged wheels, etc.

Mercedes is doing the same thing with the AMG E43

They know that 90 degree V6 is a piece of garbage (should have been a 60 degree V6 like the Lexus and Toyota V6 all along)

But they need to get rid of all the parts for the old V6 even though they know the new inline 6 is vastly superior in every aspect.

So the roll out this lame turbo 4 from the GLA and C class.

Six months later those customers that want performance are lured in by this sexy AMG E43 with 333 hp and this crappy 90 degrees lame sounding V6

8 months later they will roll out the 400 hp inline 6 and the 450 hp and 500 hp plus 4 liter V8 (detuned) from the AMG GTS

What do they tell those suckers that fell for the 333 hp E43?

"Trade it in"

I actually had a deposit for an E Class but changed my mind after the pathetic Honda Accord 4 cylinder turbo was debut as the base engine on roll out.

I am now waiting for the 2017/ 2018 Mercedes CLS which I hope will come with either the inline 6 or V8 as a CLS 550 option

It is a disgrace that the illustrious E Class is being released with a 4 cylinder

That's like releasing a Porsche 911 with a flat four cylinder and calling it a Carrera S

This MPG thing has gone way too far

My dealer acts like "he has no idea" that the inline 6 cylinders are coming. He told me the "torque in the 4 cylinder is the same as the old V6"

So I can go 0 to 60 faster but them have my engine wheeze and struggle to pull 4000 pounds once I get to 75 mph going up a steep hill?

Again, a car company can change anything at any time. They can offer them both anytime. There is absolutely NO legal reason why they can't. Mercedes has changed engines in the middle of a model year before. This engine thing has zero to do with any legal reason.

I agree, but the W212 E400 is clearly NOT the best selling version of the W212 E-Class, the E350 is.

I feel bad for anyone whose lease is ending before the other engine options are available. Those who own, not lease, can wait it out if they want to. Though I suppose the vast majority of leasing E350 drivers will be happy with the E300 and get a 2017. However, a minority of them along with those leasing E400 and E550 models will end up switching to other brands to get the power options they want.

I guess I am used to manufacturers doing facelifts or special editions in the middle of a market cycle. Some are very predictable so you can plan on it. I can appreciate that strategy to give leasing buyers a reason to get another one before a major refresh. But this definitely feels incomplete to launch with one option. They look like they are not ready, rather than savvy. Perhaps this is typical for MB and I am not used to it.

I think Mercedes is waiting for the new engines to put in a 6 cylinder into the E-class. The new E right now is for people looking for a bigger C-class. Or people who just want the status symbol of a Mercedes.

I'm supposing you're beside yourself over the Boxster going Flat 4 now, too - despite the fact that aside from sound it is superior to the flat 6?

"Illustrious E Class"... the car used as a taxi elsewhere in the world. It's a wonderful car, but who is buying an E class for status?

Of course they can but that does not mean there will not be litigation. When was the last time MB replaced an engine mid year? Don't confuse replacing with offering and extra engine mid year.

It doesn't matter man. They can change engine at any time or offer an extra one it doesn't matter. You CAN'T sue them for that. Read the fine print, it says that manufacturer can change specs or anything else at any time. This engine issue has NOTHING to do with litigation or any laws. NO one is confusing anything here. They did it with the first generation ML mid year with the V6s and also with the W211 E-Class with the 3.5L V6, mid year. They replaced the old engines and kept it moving.

2017 E 400 Wagon

The 2017 E wagon will come as a E 400. The wagon can be ordered in September for December delivery. This is contained in an email from the Central sales representative from Mercedes.

I'm sorry but this is nonsense. It is not because Canadians are less litigious. I'm not saying I have an answer for this very perplexing decision by MBUSA but it certainly is not the one you are propounding.

That being said, I am absolutely stunned that this is the only engine variant they released upon model launch.
