S213
S213 build delayed

I was already sceptical when being given a delivery date of late February after placing the order for my S213 Nov. 29 or so. A recent follow-up with the dealer confirmed a delay until late March now; supposedly due to the Designo paint, the pano roof and P3

6 Mos Delivery

That's was my initial reaction, However, 6 mos (UGH!) seems to be par for the course in many cases. Mine was mfg in Germany, not Mars (LoL), took 2 wks on the water and then about 5 days from destination port to dealer--Ordered Luxury w/ P3, 2nd 12.3 display, plus a few other items, all of which were offered for sale by MB.
You do need a sense of humor to navigate this purchase process!

Soft sell on delivery included extended warranty, prepaid/fixed maintenance for 4yr/40,000mi and paint chip/tire/wheel repair. I opted for maintenance item and they gave me the paint chip/tire/wheel item since the delivery on car order took 6 mos.
I'd rate the explanation of car electronics and other features upon delivery as a 'B-"--was rushed and wouldn't have covered many new features had I not pushed for answers and further details. Had I not been familiar w/ many features from prior MB, I would have been lost. Recommendation: Don't schedule your pick-up late in afternoon or end of the day.
Good Luck.

Further initial observations...Workmanship and Quality are top of the line...Operator's Manual needs some work--somewhat difficult to follow and coordinate w/ features in the car actually purchased. Better layout of manual might improve presentation of function/option descriptions, operating instructions, etc; presently confusing and hard to follow.

If you ordered the P3 Package plan for a minimum of 5 months to get your car.

I never got a satisfactory answer as to what in the P3 was the issue. My impression was that MB corporate wasn't forthcoming with the dealership...just as they weren't with the Connect issue. I think my salesman or the technician would have told me if they knew.

Plus, be prepared for a very "fussy" Parking Pilot system. It seems to only like about 20% of the parking spaces you drive by...but the camera system is excellent and you really can use it more reliably.

I hear you Dukester. However I have no car yet nor even a VIN number. So it well may be that you are simply getting a more accurate answer than I am. Time will tell.

When did you place your order?

And surprising to hear it takes over two months to actually get the car after it is built.

Late Dec. Dealer replaced one of their orders and made it mine.

The boat is in the Atlantic arriving Brunswick, GA on the 1st. Not sure if it will be trucked from there or trained or continue on by boat. Awaiting an answer.

There are many ship tracking services available on the web. All one needs is identifying information that can be obtained from Mercedes or your SA.

Some shipping lines have a tool whereby one enters a VIN to obtain specific shipping information.

I have just been given a VIN number. Is there a way for me to track the car directly -- even before it is on a ship (embarking from Lisbon)?

That's strange. "National Allocations" sounds like rationing.

You hit the nail on the head. Each dealer is allocated X number of vehicles of each model that they can sell. AFAIK this is true for most brands. I ran into and allocation issue with BMW a few months ago. That is just one of the reasons I opted for a 2018 E300 where I have priority status with the dealer.

But surely if the dealer accepts your order and takes your deposit they can actually order you a car. Certainly no one told me "We will place your order as soon as we get an allocation, which might take months." Are you suggesting that is the case? No question it feels like something odd is going on when so many of us are told the ordered car will come in a few weeks (in my case "6-8") only to have it take many more. I might expect such poor customer service from Chrysler or Hyundai...but from a marquis brand like Mercedes? It's worrisome.

The build delays for MY17 have been due to supplier issues, not allocations.
My dealer won't take an order if they don't have an allocation or can't swap allocations with another dealer (a common practice).
