Squealing Brakes

I am hearing a slight squeal when slowing down at a medium brake pressure, for example at a stop sign, at lower speeds.

I have the sport package and the 19 inch wheels. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Car has about 1,200 miles on it, doesn't seem like I should hear a brake squeal.

I got the car with 16 miles on it, so not too many people drove it before me.

There was an alignment issue when I went to pick up the car, the steering wheel wasn't straight in the car when the car was driving straight but that was quickly resolved by the dealer. They said they hadn't done a full inspection on the car since it arrived but then they completed that...I am starting to question that validity of that.

You should bring it back and tell them the brakes are squealing. They should do something about it since it should be under warranty. With only 1200 miles they should NOT be doing that. I have the 19 inch AMG wheels on mine too and so far they haven't done that and i have a little less than 700 miles on mine.

In fact, squealing brakes are a common complaint. They squeal regularly when the weather is cold and humid particularly if its very cold. They will sqeal till they warm up, usually after a few applications. Mine do so particularly loudly. Its due to the pad composition. Its not a defect. I dont mind it at all, its a charateristic of a pad compound that handles high heat stress well.

.
Apply the brakes more forcefully to warm them and the squeal will go away.
That said the brakes also need a wear-in period.

About 700 miles on mine - 19 inch wheels. I am getting tons of brake dust, but no noise at all from brakes. We've had about 3 inches of rain over the weekend, and temps in the teens about three weeks back - no noise, so I would have yours looked at.

arg, I also have a ton of break dust on my fronts with 19". I have had vibration and very slow creeps and also the brake squeal. Whatever pads they are using, they need to be changed. This happens not just at cold starts but also after being driven.

If you look on the new C-Class forum you'll find a lot of complaints about squealing brakes too.

My moms 20 inch non-AMG rims on her 2015 S class used to squeal back when we first got it up until about 6-8 months. My E300 with the 19 inch AMG wheels only have a lot of brake dust.

Have had my E300 for 7 months with 19" wheels...Still squeal....Known issue which started, I was told, with the 2015 models. You would think they would have solution by now. Also excessive brake dust in front wheel.

I just though to mention a note about new cars....It is best to use moderate to easy braking in a new car for about the first 200 miles if possible, just as your mechanic will suggest when a car gets brake pads replaced. The pads need to 'bed in'. Don't baby them, but if you are out on the freeway doing 80mph, turn into an offramp under heavy braking a few times during what should be a break in period, the pads may become so hot they "glaze" the pad surface and squeaking will be a problem for some time.

Conversely, BMW 5 series for a while used pads suitable for braking from 120mph on US cars. They never got enough heat in them in normal American use to operate at a proper temperature range. As a result, operating too cold, they were highly abrasive, again not forming this deposition layer, and simply ate brake rotors for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Ideally brake pads warm up and operate on a thin deposition of material upon the rotor. That is how they get their 'grip' and why your rotors simply do not just grind down to nothing. If the pads are heavily used when new, used it is possible to heat them up too much before they bed in. They become glazed with a hardened micro surface that does not easily form this beneficial deposition layer during regular use. They will be quite prone to squeaking.

But, as has been noted, pads can squeak first thing in the morning when stone cold just because they are disk brakes, this somewhat dependent on the pad material itself. One should not be annoyed by this. Once they get a little heat in them, the noise goes away.

However, if they really squeak all the time, hot and cold, then severe squeaking may possibly be cured by removing the pads, touch them up with carbide paper and give them a second chance to bed in.

If the car has been sitting for some time and the rotors, soft iron as they are, can become rusty. Driving will quickly reform the pad/rotor contact surfaces, but not without a bit of grinding or sometimes squeal as well the first few applications. Again, no big deal.

Hope this is helpful.
