I've got plenty of time. My family folks are very long lived at 100+ while I'm in my early 70's. That's the new 50's.
You're lucky in the genomic lottery. Everyone in my family is dead by 72. I've got 10 years to go unless the bus gets me first! I would think your wife should love it, the female species doesn't have the need for speed as we do. Regards. Ned.

"Grocery getter". What a great term. Lol!

Soon: 2017 E300 4Matic
I have a little tyke in the way, so although I would like a little more juice out of the E300, it's probably best that I start slowing it down a bit and taking my time. If it was just me to worry about, bring on the 43/63. I'm coming from a Hemi Jeep GC and scoffed at the i4, but after driving it, it's more than capable.

This will be my first MB, I'm not quite at the point for a S-Class, but really appreciated the tech and safety feature of the new E-Class. Can't wait for delivery!

Check Rentech, they may have a tune for the 2.0 turbo.

Don't see anything yet on their web site (it's double N, RENNtech, by the way), but they may have some 2.0 help in the works.

I was hoping that the 2018 E Class had a 6 cylinder option, but it doesn't.
I ordered the E300 for my wife as a grocery getter. I'm keeping the E400.

Coming from an E400 myself, I find the E300 more than holds its own against its formidable siblings. There are differences and trade offs between these two fine cars, of course. I think anyone who's interested in the E300 should take the car out for an extended road trip before rendering his/her final judgement. Here are my takes after completing two +1K miles trips in two consecutive weeks - through congested metros, open flat tops, winding back roads, mountain passes, blinding rains, glorious clear skies, idiot drivers, high speed cruising, high speed passing - The only lacking condition was the fluffy white snow.
  • I was still savoring the drive during the home stretch. In some cars, it was a chore driving the last 100 miles. I had fun tossing and putting the E300 through its pace to the last minute.
  • I was completely relaxed as I pulled into the garage after both trips. The only other car that managed to do the same is the GL450. Granted, they both have heated and massaging seats.
  • The E300's chassis is something to be reckon with. It feels lighter and equally agile while out-sizing the E400. It's ready to dance whenever you're.
  • The quiet interior, relaxed manner, capable handling, and unflappable character are qualities that one starts to appreciate after putting in enough seat times.
  • I pushed the E300 pretty hard and the car just shrugged them off with no drama at all.
  • I'd replace the run flat tires if the 6 cylinder is in the picture. Due to the bad roads around here, I'm content with the 4 bangers - Beside, it's the perfect engine for a daily driver.
  • Leaving the engine topic aside, the E300 is the better car in many aspects. It's a worthy upgrade and would serve as a great car for the vast majority of MB owners.
Best,

E300 4Matic

This topic has been beaten to death but here are my 2 cents.
Like everyone else I was like 4 Cyl Turbo. Meh.

I have had my E300 4Matic for just over 3 months. I find it has plenty of power plus getting 33-34 mpg on road trips of all sorts. Climbing mountain roads is a non issue. Highway passing etc etc.

The deciding factor for me was comparing my previous ride - Lexus ES350 to the E300.

Here is where the magic happens. Also note the E300 has slightly larger dimensions.

Lexus ES30 - 3.5L V6
268 hp
Torque 248 @ 4,700 rpm
0-60 = 7.1 sec

E300 - 2.0L 4 Turbo
241 hp
Torque 273 @ 1,300 rpm
0-60 = 6.2 sec

Go out and rev your car engine to 4,700 rpm and then drop it down to 1,300 rpm. Huge difference on how hard the engine is working for the amount of torque returned.

Im not an expert and again this is just my opinion....

It might be a little low on power compared to some of the competition byt the GS not to even mention the ES are no competition in any other parameter. The GS is one of the lamest driving cars I have ever driven. Its handily outclassed by a C class. I drove a C and a GS back to back and it was no contest. The ES is a lightly disguised Camry, period. The LS is so old its basicly a dinosaur. Acura is basicly a single model brand (MDX) and I dont know how Infinity is still around. I dont know whats wrong with the Japanese luxury brands, they used to be viable alternatives now they are just awful.

Completely agree the 2017 ES 350 is an Avalon with a Lexus badge, and the GS is more comparable to the E300, but like you, I did not care for the GS.

Not sure why one would compare a Lexus es350 to a Mercedes e class, much different price points. I have a 2011 rx350 and often get an es as a loaner, not a terrible value proposition for the money, comfortable and nice upscale interior. Just think how much nicer the e would be with a nice 340hp turbo v6. Most 4's still feel like windup toys to me, albeit nice toys. It is what it is. Mercedes really doesn't give us the more basic v6 choice. Regards. Ned.

Ok for argument sake let's compare the GS 350 F Sport AWD. 3.5L V6 311 HP. Still only looking at 0-60 in 5.8 sec. Very little difference.
My point here is the 4 cyl turbo in the E300 is performing just a tiny bit under its V6 competitors. That includes it's predecessor the E350. The new E300 is a mere few tenths of a second slower. So my advice is don't dismiss the E300 with out driving it...

If drivers want a E Class V6 turbo you can get one. In the AMG E43. But that changes the price point.

I did test drive the e300. I had an e43 on order but cancelled it when the dealer wouldn't give me bubkis off the msrp despite me being a 30 year Mercedes customer and despite constant delays in delivery. The e300 is certainly a wonderful vehicle but not if you want the feel of a bigger engine, which is what I'm used to and prefer. Paid up to buy a loaded new 2016 Audi s8 plus and haven't looked back. Something completely different after three prior e's. Still have my 2011 e550. I'm sure had I bought the e300 I would have adjusted and been happy, just not as happy. Enjoy! Regards. Ned.

Felt like eating some popcorn. Also, I was laughing out loud at the original post. I’ve never seen a meltdown like that on a car forum before.
