Questions Regarding Parking Sensors

2 Attachment(s)
Hey all,

So I noticed the past few days my parking sensors have been a bit weird.

1. in the upper left corner, it says LIM by the parking sensors (see attached picture)

2. Sometimes when I am backing up or going forward, I will notice the side sensors will not show up sometimes and other times they will all show up. Like in the pictures I will post, notice how it shows the lines for the side sensors that run from the front bumper to the back bumper (not the front and back sections). If this doesn't make sense I can try to photoshop a picture with the area of the sensors I am talking about.

Any help would be appreciated

I have also noticed the LIM in mine too, but I have the surround view camera. I notice it every time I back out of my tight garage in the morning, and I dont really see it any other time.

doesn't the LIM light mean that you have activated speed limiter?

Lanzz 02-06-2017 08:07 AM

Wondering this myself, and i did not find anything in the manual about it... I see it when I pull into a tight space at work - I don't see it any other time.

It means that the speed limiter is active.

Lanzz 02-06-2017 09:11 AM

Thanks - what does the speed limited do? (I get the concept, trying to understand generally what conditions trigger it...)

ua549 02-06-2017 10:10 AM

Parking Pilot limits the speed. In addition you can set a speed limit in Distronic.

I understand that the button at the end of the cruise control lever is used to switch between speed limiter and cruise control. Perhaps you have inadvertently pressed it.

makris0000 02-06-2017 11:54 AM

So what does that do? Does it just mean that I can't go over a certain speed with the cameras on?

joshg1001 02-06-2017 12:23 PM

I know that in the past, other markets outside of the US have that LIM switch at the end of their cruise control stock, but we never got that in the US. There is also no chance of switching it on after just starting the car.

Literally, I start the car, put it in reverse, and then see the LIM. The only thing I can think of is that the car thinks I am surrounded by obstacles and is limiting movement of the car for fear I will hit something. I do notice that the brakes are slightly sticky and can hear the computer moderating the brakes

In this picture, this is the other thing I had a question about. See how there is nothing on the sides? Why is that.

Could it be because you have just gotten into the car, or for some other reason the computer has been unable to interpolate the location of obstacles that it has not driven passed and mapped. This being because there are no ultrasonic sensors on the sides of the vehicle so the car's computer needs data of passing obstacles to tell you where they are as you maneuver the vehicle with some speed.

I assume that in that photo you're in reverse with the front wheels straight forward. The markings are showing that there is nothing impeding you ability to back straight out. If you were to turn the wheel, you would see the highlighted direction of travel.

Im guessing thats probably what it is because after I move a little they start to show the lines for them (and then when I'm close then it'll have the colored sections).

joshg1001 02-08-2017 01:09 AM

Don't worry, I looked closely at mine and the side sensors do not show upon startup, and start to show after you start moving a bit. It must need time to initialize.

I also noticed if you go over a certain speed, they will not activate. When I was leaving Publix they went off while the camera was still on and then they came back on when I slowed down.

I noticed the LIM in the same position as the OP mentions while parking very close to a wall. The LIM message disappears what I move away from the obstacle. AMG E53 Coupe with Active Park Assist and Surround View Cameras. I noticed when configuring parking and maneuvering assistance “LIM” is at the front of the car in the display graphic. It is part of the parking assistance feature, just not sure exactly what it means.

I believe that when "LIM" appears, the system is operating at or beyond the limits of its capability. In this case, it means that parking assistance cannot be provided because the space(s) around the car are too tight for proper operation.

That sounds reasonable. Have you seen that in writing somewhere? I can’t find it in the manual.

joshg1001 12-31-2018 12:29 PM

I am pretty sure the LIM is the speed limiter. I have tried pushing the throttle further down when I see the lim and nothing happens. The car prevents me from speeding up beyond normal idle speed

Wondering the same thing myself. I think you’re right. It’s the collision avoidance system preventing you from accelerating above a certain speed, so you don’t hit what’s in front?

No, definitely not. The parking sensors still work when LIM is displayed. It must be that you are in close proximity to another object and speed is limited. I think it will auto brake if you try to get too close (but I have not tried it!).
