Best Value in mid-sized luxury

Truth be told, except for the S class and SL, MB is not a luxury car but rather a premium car in some models and a very ordinary car in the small and compact models. No one looks twice at any MB. With close to 350K sales per year in the US, it's become quite mundane.
I don't say that to diminish the brand as a fine automobile but rather to point out that there is no prestige in owning one.

Sorry if I struck a nerve with my comment but I can see your point of view. The prices you pay for these cars "Down Unda" makes it feel like you bought a luxury car but unfortunately that does not make it so.

So according to you a brand has to be rare and over priced to qualify as a luxury car?
I beg to differ.

In fact, that is the definition of luxury which is diametrically opposite to value. Again value and luxury are antonyms, if it isnt rare and available to anyone its not a "luxury". A better adjective is well equipped.

Here is what someone posted about a "luxury vehicle" on Wikipedia:
"Luxury vehicle is a marketing term for a vehicle that provides luxury — pleasant or desirable features beyond strict necessity — at increased expense (see luxury goods).
The term suggests a vehicle with higher quality equipment, better performance, more precise construction, comfort, higher design, technologically innovative modern, or features that convey an image, brand, status, or prestige, or any other 'discretionary' feature or combination of them. The term is also broad, highly variable and relative. It is a perceptual, conditional and subjective attribute that may be comprehended differently by different people; "What is a luxury car to some... may be 'ordinary' to others."
I don't know what the rules are for others but that seems to make sense to me.

So, am I right or wrong???
I'll concede that just maybe I am both, depending on the model.
PS Now that I have had fun annoying everyone on this thread, it's time for me to get off before someone thanks me.

Anyone mind looking up the definition of a "douchebag" or should we all settle for douchebag=pete1997?

I'll answer the question why I drive an MB. Simply force of habit. My wife and I have had 22 of them since 1983 plus I have two 18 models on order an E43 and an E400. Second reason, one of my neighbors is my dealer. Third I never said I did not like MB, simply that they were a premium car in most models, not a luxury car.
As far as being a douche bag, that could be correct.
PS Obviously you are upset by my opinion and it appears you don't like the term "grocery getter". Trust me, the feeling will pass when you driven them for 30 years or so. They actually get pretty ordinary.

I drive MB cars because I feel that the E Class and above cars are luxurious, well engineered, well built and last, but not least, I believe that they are the safest cars on the planet. I'll also admit that I like the image they convey, which is that the owner is smart. I live in a town where Rolls-Royces, Bentleys and Ferraris are commonplace and I never feel envious of those drivers. Well, maybe when I see a new RR Dawn.

Seems like you and "grocery getter" have something in common. You must be really rich too. Lol
Well at least we agree that youre a douche bag.

Watches. The one thing I have never understood. Why any guy would wear a gaudy watch the size of a dinner plate is beyond me. I can afford most any watch on the planet and I wear a ten year old Seiko. Of course, that's when Im not wearing one of my Swatch watches.

"Really rich" of course not, otherwise I would not be driving the "taxi of Europe". I am happy that you have learned that "douchebag" is actually two words.

Just got an email from Consumer Reports re: Best Value based on their surveys. The respondents ranked the Genesis G80 as Best Value in mid-size luxury cars. It compared very favorably to competitors, but at a much lower cost to purchase and to own.
This is not CR's opinion, but that of the people in the survey.
Just providing this as food for thought.

Consumer Reports and their subscribers value old fashioned family oriented, low performing, inexpensive vehicles. Brady bunch comes to mind. Not modern, up to the minute, high tech families.

That's the point. A $25,000 Piaget must not be a luxury watch because it sells more units and is less expensive than the Richard Mille $800,000 piece worn by Rafael Nadal (while playing tennis).
What defines luxury? Genesis might be a nice car, but it has achieved neither taxi status nor luxury status yet. I'll keep my plain old Mercedes thank you very much.
