Best Value in mid-sized luxury

Just got an email from Consumer Reports re: Best Value based on their surveys. The respondents ranked the Genesis G80 as Best Value in mid-size luxury cars. It compared very favorably to competitors, but at a much lower cost to purchase and to own.
This is not CR's opinion, but that of the people in the survey.
Just providing this as food for thought.

Calling any Mercedes best value is an oxymoron.
Ive checked the G80. Fine car as long as your expectations are solely leather stuffy seats and an unrefined big engine. Cushy ride, torpid handling, unrefined thirsty engine, etc. A nice replacement for your dads old Cadillac. If you think about it as a slightly more upper crust Avalon you're right on the money.

You are confused. The Lexus ES is the "more upper crust Avalon." The G80 is more powerful, larger and better equipped.

Size wise the Avalon is most appropriate. The ES is smaller. And yes Im aware the Avalon is a stretched Camry which in turn is the foundation of the ES. Maybe we should say that the G80 is trying to outLS the LS. Another boring overstuffed car for old fogies.:nix:
Again, Mercedes is never going to win any Best Value awards "luxury" and best value are a contradiction in terms.:hammer::hammer::hammer::hammer::hammer:

The Genesis is disqualified because of the dealer experience alone. Never buy a "luxury" car at the same place you can buy (and service) an Elantra.

I owned the new genesis (no longer have it). Actually, it is a very nice car. The interior however doesn't compare to the Mercedes E300. The weight distribution of that car never made me feel safe...very hard to stop quickly if need be. But, the navigation system in the Genesis is outstanding (except for the voice commands)! Lots of good features, easy to use, intuitive. They have a concept car "Vision G" that looks pretty interesting. I think Hyundai will come up the ranks in time but it will probably take quite a while to build the reputation of the common top brands.

You can have a best value in any category. It means that one item is a better value than comparable items. NOT that one item is the best value OF ALL items in the world.
Not that the G80 is the Best Value of ALL cars period.
Please note, the selection of the G80 was made by people who OWN MB's, Audis' BMW's, etc. of the same size and LUXURY category.
:smash::smash::smash::zoom: Happy Motoring!

Incidentally, the G80 is handled by stand alone Genesis dealerships. There is a transition period while Hyundai dealers will also be permitted to sell the G80 while the Genesis brand stands up.
Purchasing it at the same place where you can get an Elantra does not diminish its value as a luxury car. No more than being able to purchase an older MB or get it serviced diminishes it as a luxury car.
Going by Shortsparks definition of "luxury" would mean that a 5+ year old MB or one purchased from an owner or Carmax or one serviced by an indy would not qualify as a "luxury" car.

El Cid, I've seen many posts from you in the W212 section, good stuff. i realize you may be ready to move on to a newer vehicle, but I fail to see why this post was made, and in this forum. The G80 is a fine car in its own right. If that is where your attention is leaning, congrats, I think it's a good looking car.

That said, I agree with the sentiment that Genesis as a brand is up and coming, just not there yet. Once there, I suspect Genesis will be in line with Lexus/Infiniti/Acura. Most of the vehicles I have owned have been from Japan. German cars drive differently, at least for me. Hence why I moved from Infiniti to M-B and have not looked back.

All subjective, drive with a smile, this is a M-B forum after all.

Just posted it for the informational value for anyone looking at cars in this class. Not pushing the G80, but it is one I would consider as opposed to the W213. And it still offers a V8, although that does not matte to me.

ha ha. Well said. There must be a forum for Genesis cars for similar minded people. Good luck.

Not to sound pretentious, but if someone is going from a Benz to a Hyund... er. Genesis, I automatically think something happened to them and they are financially unsound, or if they go straight to Genesis, theres a chance they cannot afford to be in a Benz, BMW, Audi, etc. (this comes into play especially with the S class and G90, the G90 is MUCH cheaper than an S class). The reason I mention the latter is because I have had people try to on Mercedes while they're trying to hype up their Hyundai (at the time), but then I would discover they just couldn't afford to get into a Benz.

Not saying the G80 or G90 is a crappy car by any means (I still need to check them out sometime since they branched off from Hyundai), but having a Benz I see it as more of a status symbol.

Tsk,Tsk.Your comment is demeaning. Don't sell the Genesis short. It's not a question of affordability for those so inclined, it's value. Those cars are not to be sneezed at and I would not look down on anyone who buys one. Their money is still in the bank and are most probably laughing at you sitting on your phony high horse.

I wouldnt look down on anyone using what car they drive as a guideline. However comparing a Hyundai to an E class is beyond ridiculous. Give it a rest enough trolling. I you like it so much go and enjoy their website

It's a Genesis not a Hyundai and it is a a comparable car. The argument that people buy them was because they could not afford an E class and that is simply arrogant. Even though the Genesis may not appeal to me I can appreciate why some people like them.

As far as being a troll, I have been a member since since 1999. That's a little longer than 2014.

shortspark 03-22-2017 08:26 PM

I can afford almost any car on the planet. However, I wanted to look at the Genesis to see what all the fuss was about (it received very decent reviews, both from pro drivers and the every day man). If I liked it I would have bought it. I test drove it and it was fine indeed but not comparable to the E class or CLS (which I eventually bought). If it was I would have not considered anyway because of the way I was treated at the dealership. I still maintain that the dealership experience is part of buying a luxury vehicle. I feel special at my MB dealer - I felt like a hung out sock at the Hyundai dealership. The car is most of the equation but not the total.

Of course it's a Hyundai, what are you talking about?

Streamliner 03-23-2017 11:17 AM

Three things:
1. I too have had horrible experiences at Hyundai dealerships, just trying to LOOK at the Genesis cars. They need to take lessons from MB, Lexus, etc. I don't need to be talked down to by some kid with spiked hair, speaking with an accent so thick it sounds like he is still in ESL classes.
2. The very best thing about the Genesis brand, is that it will push MB & other luxury brands to offer more & better content in their cars. MB drivers have much to thank Lexus for, as that brand gave the Germans a solid kick in the ass and really pushed them into becoming more competitive in their offerings. Genesis will push them even further.
3. No matter how good these other brands become, they never seem to be able to duplicate or even rival the panache that is Mercedes-Benz. As long as MB can maintain it--and to this owner, they are working overtime at TRYING to screw it up--their cars will always command a hefty premium.

ADD0514 03-23-2017 02:14 PM

I remember the sneerings Lexus received during its early days. Then the term "Lexus like" was coined and used in very major car magazines.
The Japanese was once the king of the hill in big screen TV. Remember Pioneer's Kuro? Then Samsung and LG waded into the foray and beat the existing players to the pulp.
Toyota had half a decade of experience, established reputation, and a solid infrastructure when they launch Lexus. Hyundai has far less that that and the G80 is their 3rd attempt at building a reasonably luxurious car that serves as an option for Lexus customers. Hence the focus on comfort oriented ride rather than performance. They're nowhere close to MB in term of service and refinements, but their technical capabilities and advancements cannot be dismissed.
Incidentally, I visited 2 MB dealers in my area when I was shopping for the E300 last summer. The sales people - the two I encountered - were snobbish and rude. Their attitude prompted me to cross shop at Jaguar, Lexus, and Hyundai. I purchased the E300 at a a 3rd dealer due to their superior people skills. So, while MB cars are the pinnacle of the industry, there are technical and service shortcomings for MB just like everyone else.

The servicing dealer plays a large role when I'm deciding on a car to purchase.

So let me guess, they rolled out the red carpet, popped the most expensive champagne bottle they have with beluga caviar on the side when you bought your "grocery getter"? Oh and lets not forget the paparazi. Anything for the richest boy in the forum.
