Black gloss center console cleaning/protection

I see random comments in some threads about how hard the center console is to keep clean and scratch free. Fully agree.

Clean doesn't bother me. I can always wipe it down.

But the easy scratching annoys me-in one week mine is already picking up scratches. What are you folks using to protect it? Ive seen a thread where Meguiar's spray wax was mentioned- what else? Aside from replacing or wrapping it.

Any recommendations on this? I just picked up several scratches from the vacuum at the car wash this morning. Very annoying.

Soft cotton cloth is recommended by Daimler, they even have them for sale.

I use Meguiar's spray wax to keep the dust from adhering to the center console. It leaves a very slippery surface. I only need to clean the console with a soft cotton cloth once a month. Do NOT use a microfiber cloth.

Can anything be done about the scratches? Will they buff out with a soft cloth?

Any way to polish the center console?

bellavance 03-25-2018 09:27 AM

Pledge polish?

ua549 03-25-2018 09:34 AM

IMO polishing will make it worse since polishes contain abrasives. That's why I use Meguiar's synthetic hydrophobic spray wax (no residue) and a soft cotton cloth.

In previous cars I have had I have used pledge to protect wood clear coat with good results. The piano black is a killer for scratches and I don't think you can stop them. It looks great on the showroom but for everyday use it is not the best. I am looking for a replacement in the burl wood but haven't located it yet. I would rather get a true MB part rather then an eBay knock off. So I wait and wax on and wax my center console lol

AFAIK MB does not have a burl walnut part for the W213. I have not seen a third party part either.

yes I know bummer, I've looked for hours on this issue. I doubt there will be one for this series. The reason is interesting though.

The only reason I ordered the burl walnut was because of the steering wheel. :(

Funny me too. I wanted the old school wood sterling wheel and I was surprised it didn't come in other wood types.

I wish they would offer a burl center console, as the wood grain will hide much of the wear & tear.

I also wish they made the center console out of porcelain. High gloss with a finish that would last and feel pretty darn nice too. Granite/marble/quartz would have been acceptable as well.

If they wern't so expensive I'd order one to use as a template.

Does the Meguiar's hydrophobic spray wax make the scratches look less noticeable? Its just maddening that my car isn't even a month old and these scratches are there.

I do not have any scratches as of yet, but I only have 2k miles on the car. I never drive with windows open. Our dust here is quartz sand. It will scratch anything it touches.

Has anyone with scratches found a solution that improves the look?

grossmsj 03-27-2018 07:28 AM

If this is driving you nuts, I'd take it to a detailer and have them show you how to do it. They'll have the right combination of abrasives/polishes to take out the scratches. It beats trial and error, especially the error part.
You can fix it yourself after that.

I wonder if it would pay to have the clear bra product applied to the console top to prevent scratches?

I asked my dealer about this scratch problem with Piano and he says many are adding a protective film layer.

amf77 03-28-2018 03:43 PM

Hello Skyblazer: Is there a specific product that your dealer knows about to protect the console?. Today, I asked a business that installs clearbra on cars. Their comment was that they won't use a clear bra type product on plastic as the adhesive will eat into the plastic. Also, they won't cut custom pieces for fear of cutting into the plastic.........Is that part painted metal, perhaps? If metal, it might be ok to use a product with adhesive.......unless it attacks the paint? Does the company that is covering the console have a template, perhaps.

Skyblazer 03-28-2018 03:56 PM

He didn't know the name of product or where to purchase.

Just said some people had added a protective film.
