Updating the W213 is risky?
My E220D went in for its first service and when I asked for any software updates I was told that if any were available, I would be asked first for my permission because if anything went wrong I would be responsible. New orders from Mercedes they said.... Anybody knows something about this?

A typical ridiculous excuse from a workshop to skip that task. There are a few SW updates that the workshop cannot avoid doing. The rest are more or less voluntary, have to be taken care of if the customer complains about certain bugs. The workshop is 100% responsible of the update.
If you have observed bugs, complain about them. If you are aware of a SW update that fixes bugs, complain about the bugs even if you had not seen them yourself. But do not ask for a SW update if you are expecting some fancy new features that do not exist in your car but have been introduced on a later model. It is a very rare case that MB brings new features with SW updates.

Dealers aren't thrilled about doing software updates because they can take a long time and don't generate any income for them.

Hmm i think the command online update said it can take upto 24 hours... and even more so required a CD to be ordered from Merc HQ to do so... No wonder they will not like doing it for you

But I must tell you this; MB tech said there will be a major update coming late 2017 that will change a lot of things in Command Online (to fix the things they could not do on release)...
And the sad fact is that I heard that the NTG6 that had the touchscreen implementation with buttons on corners. But being the early implementation I hear it had very square X buttons and improper located menus... Next years (or following?) buyers will be in for a treat....

2 ways to check for updates:
1) in the car menu
2) on the mercedes me website
I believe maps always have to be downloaded to a memory
card because the files are just too big

I believe these are "telematics" update only however; so only maps will update. They did say they will enable other updates (command/instrument-screen etc) as time passes but not now due to security concerns.

Ive tried 3 times now to download all EU maps (25gb in total),
It seems the MB downloader downloads the maps to the PC
and then writes them to the card. And that's where it goes
wrong, cos it hangs at 1pct...

Even when downloading one area/file at at time, the download manager randomly failed.

I'n now dowloading only France (3gb ) - been going for some 5hrs and is at 75%
So if i want the whole of western europe i'm looking at a good 24hrs downloading...
It's a joke... it used to be quicker to just go to the dealer and have them do it!

downloading one by one definitely works, but it's a hassle nonetheless...
next step; updating it in the car... i'm a bit scared to do so to be honest ;-)

downloaded half of available countries one by one
and updated accordingly.
logged on to my mercedes me website and it show
that updates have been done, as well as which updates
still available.
It also now gives me the option to choose ONE country
for which the car automatically will update the maps
(option wasn't there before)
I think i know why i wasn't able to download all maps at once;
The pc shuts down USB ports which are not being used
and can not always switch them back on when needed.
so i think during the (long) download the port (ie card reader)
switches off and when the downloader finally tries to write to
it the port won't wake up.
in the pc's advanced power management i now set it
so the ports never go to sleep
and updated accordingly.

New update out (V 280).
The car should have updated the maps for France directly by itself, yet it does not.
Though did manage to download all countries at once this time via my pc.

I've had similar problems in the past with map downloads freezing / not writing. Mercedes me Connect Customer Assistance couldn't throw any more light on it. For me, trial and error showed that MacOSX (Sierra) + Safari was problematical, as was Windows 7 + Chrome. Windows 7 + IE seems to work fine - have downloaded the complete V280 set today with no issues.
