I've asked this on Reddit but thought I'd ask here too.

I'll soon be taking delivery of a W213 which comes with a standard cockpit and small LCD.

I was wondering if anyone here has had any experience of changing the cluster to the widescreen variant?

I have seen videos online on how to remove the cluster which looks fairly straightforward. I'm just concerned that if I replace the cluster with another one, it won't work without some sort of coding.

Could it be as simple as plug and play?

I also have the option of buying a used cluster which includes the standard speedometer but with the Comand 12.3" screen.

I'm thinking along the lines of purchasing this and replacing the speedometer with the existing one if I can get away with not having to do any coding. Would this work?

You'll most likely need to upgrade the firmware to make any of it work. Worst case scenario is that a different controller is required.

Please explain why did you not order the car with the wide screen from the factory? Perhaps because of delayed delivery?

If you really want to have the bigger screen, leave the coming car to the shop and place a new order. Will be cheaper. Difficult to say which option gives you the new screen sooner, could be the new car.

Completely agree, cancel and reorder if you can. You'll have issues with your warranty making that kind of major change.

Retrofitting the screen is no major change, it is a 10 minute job.

However since he was referring to getting the larger analog dial comand screen this would indicate his car being equipped with Audio 20.
Audio 20 is not compatible with the widescreen display.

In a near future Audio 20 will disapepar being replaced by "NTG 5.5 high" and "NTG 5.5 entry" making it possible to select the widescreen display even with the entry level telematics.

What about for US models that have analog gauges and the 12" second screen? Can I simply unplug those and install the dual screen setup, or is additional programming required?

not easy, dealers have to:
- add datacard codes
- retrofit screen (and COMAND if your car has Audio20)
- do programming and SCN of ignition switch, cluster, screen and COMAND
definately more then 10 minutes

Okay thanks. But it can be accomplished then? I definitely wouldn't expect it to be a ten minute swap but i'm curious as to if a dealer would push back on requesting this type of retrofit. Ill be new to Mercedes and am not purchasing a new spec, but all the E300's here that are available pre-owned are specced with the analog gauges and the 12" command screen.

ask first about brand new cluster price - then you will cool down a lot, aftermarket cluster is totally not possible to integrate btw, as virginisation is not possible yet (I doubt this will be ever possible at all)

It seems I can order the OEM cluster for about $2600, not including whatever the cost would be to install and fit.

Don't forget the software cost and installation. The hardware is the easy part of the job.

cluster - up to 25 hours (2 if you are lucky man and IC will come with appropriate FW on it)
COMAND - 1 hour
calculate labor cost ....
