iPhone X Wireless Charging

Hello

With the iPhone X being released end of October/beginning of November this post may be a bit early but I figured I would ask anyway.

The new iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X all feature wireless charging. The 8 Plus is too big to fit in the wireless charging area, height wise, in the E class. From what I can see so far is the iPhone X will be smaller height wise from the 8 Plus.

My question is, what is the height of the wireless charging spot in the E class? I think it fits up to a 5.5 inch screen, but the iPhone X has a 5.8 inch screen, but the phone will be smaller than the iPhone 8 Plus.

Does anyone think the iPhone X will be able to wirelessly charge in the E class? I was really hoping I can use this feature but my 6S Plus is too big for the spot in the car.

Sorry if I seem all over the place with this post.

The phone tray measurements are approx 152mm x 82mm. Not sure of the conversion but should be close/possible

Thanks! The iPhone X height is 143.6mm and the width is 70.9mm so it should fit!

At least according to Apple’s website.

It will charge fine but may not be that helpful in the car , takes 1 hour to gain 15% of juice. will probably stick to a cable until Mercedes gains sync ability like the new 7 series.

Slow charging must be due to the phone model, not the car. My Galaxy S6 phone wirelessly charges from 15% to 75% in about 45 minutes.

Does anyone have any issues with the charging going on and off (you can tell if you have a notification sound set for charging), I'm having that with a Galaxy S7 edge - seems to be when it gets a little hot. I've toggled fast wireless on and off with no difference, same in and out of case.

It depends on the phone model. Some phones support fast-charging via wireless charging. The new iPhones will most likely not support fast charging unless its with their USB C cable.

I don't mind how fast or slow it charges, I usually have access to a charger but its convenient that its get some charge back while I'm driving instead of it sitting in the slot not doing anything.

I ordered the wireless option with my car for the convenience of not plugging in and not dealing with a dead phone in the middle of a conversation. Charging is very slow because the wireless charging has less than one amp of power. It was the worse in the comparison test of premium cars done by Car & Driver. As a matter of fact it's worth reading Car & Driver'e in depth comparison article comparing five premium cars including the Audi A7, BMW 540ix. The E43 was the car to own.

With my E the wireless charger was part of P1. And that is true the amp is lower. I experienced wireless charging on my Samsung S3 back when wireless charging was just starting to become popular. It was terribly slow back then, but the technology has been growing rapidly. I want to say the wireless charging has a 7.5 amp for the iPhone but I could be wrong.

You may be right. I am quoting from the C&D article. I may know for sure very soon. Someone posted that the E43's are being released today and I have a iPhone 8 that is supposed to be here Sept.22nd.

Nice! I'm holding out for the iPhone X because according to the specs it should just fit in the spot without a case. The Plus doesn't fit in it and won't charge wirelessly.

Just FYI, I’ve been a fan of wireless charging for a while. I have an iPhone 7 Plus with a charging case and although it doesn’t quite fit in the tray it charges anyway. It just sticks out a couple of mm but there’s plenty of contact between the phone and tray.
It looks like the iPhone X is going to fit, but even if it was too big it should still charge.

What case do you have for your 7 Plus that allows you to charge it in there? I tried with the mophie battery pack/QI charger and that was way to big. I then got the inductive coils and plugged that into my phone to charge it but it only works half the time and I have to position the coils onto the mat for it to charge.

It’s made by a company called Exelium. I’ve lost count of how many different cases I’ve tried but this one seems very good. It’s slim, and the lighting adapter part has a proper hinge so will stand being unplugged many times. Lots of other cases just have a ribbon cable and before long they break when unplugging to use a regular charging cable.

Question...

With the wireless charger option there is a USB port right beside the pad. Is this the port to use for CarPlay?

Yes. It has the little picture next to that USB port for CarPlay and AndroidAuto.

Interesting. Do you happen to have a link to the case or the manufacturer of them?

Glad to see Apply finally getting behind wireless charging for the iphone. Hope that gives a boost to that feature so it becomes ubiquitous and accessories get better at it. I still think the car implementation is a poor design and the speed is too slow for practical use.

it’s these guys: http://www.exelium.net/?lang=en
I didn’t buy direct from them, I got mine from an online shop here in Sweden. It cost around €30.

I hear what you are saying, but that’s because you’re used to letting your battery drain low, then charge back to 100%.
I’ve been using Qi chargers for a while and you develop a new habit of placing your phone on a mat by your desk, by your bedside table and now in the car. This way you keep the phone charged all the time. It sounds a hassle but for me it’s easier than plugging in.

I charge my phone overnight because I rarely take it out of my pocket. it interfaces with my Surface 4 Pro the way it does with my cars - via Bluetooth. On a long trip I'd probably use the car's QI charger.

I used to be like that too! Always using wireless charging but then I switched from Android to Apple and then that went away. Im excited for the day I can just wirelessly charge my phone and not have to plug it in. I hate having to remember to plug it in every night.

Well to be fair to the implementation, I would have to change my habits in the car and stop using the phone itself. I am usually in my car for short periods of time so a quick charger is better for me than wireless. On longer trips in the car, I am usually using the phone in a holder for navigation so it wouldn't be near the pad anyway. I guess I would have to 'buy in' to the whole android auto/apple car play and just set my phone down and not look at it for the duration of the drive. Now if they came out with the ability to mirror your phone screen on the dash and control is from there too - then I would be all in on setting the phone down.

I just use the navigation in my E class because it works well. I don't believe Mercedes vehicles support wireless CarPlay and android auto yet.
