Self install of W213 illuminated star

I’m hopeful someone can assist me. I’ve sourced OEM ILLUMINATED STAR & harness and am looking for instructions for my 2017 E300. Dealer claims no written instruction exist for this mode year. Does anyone know how to do it?

opening up this thread again :). Looking for some directions and part to order. For my 2017 E300, I checked with my local Benz dealership and they quoted me these parts and price:

166-817-75-00 : $383.80 (the illuminated star)
218-820-00-00 : $276 (electrical wiring)

Still looking for a video / thorough installation guide for this and maybe some suggestions where to get parts cheaper.

Thanks!

I know Vic hates the Chinese knock off versions but over $650 for the LED star is nothing short of highway robbery. I installed a $60 ebay special on my wife's ML last year and it still works great.....I bet even Vic couldn't tell the difference...

vic viper 02-14-2018 03:02 PM

I bet I could :)

But $650 for the OE star sounds very wrong, in Europe it is around $280 for the star assembly and $30 for the harness.

Well this is the USA - got the parts imported from Deutschland!

If anybody can make a video on how to install these on W213 it'll be great!

Read the text and look at the pictures in the link above.

Did you ever find directions for installation? I found one, but the pictures are not coming out on my computer. I am still searching for directions to install my illuminated star on a 2018 E300. Let me know if you run into any.

It's fairly straightforward if you've ever done body work on these cars.

The front bumper must be removed, it's attached with several bolts and friction plugs. Once it is off, you can remove the entire grille assembly from the bumper, it's just attached with friction clamps.

Once that's done it's plug and play with the new grille.

I've never done it myself, but I assisted in doing it once, took about an hour.

From what I understand I just remove the Star in the grill by twisting it counter-clockwise and route the wires. I don't however know which connector to insert the pin in the connector that is located in the fuse box.

Sorry for the delay, pictures are back up.

Vic - Thank you for the clear pictures with concise directions. Can’t wait to install it in the morning. I appreciate you helping an amateur!

For those who have the none MB official illuminated star installed, can you share where you got it from? $500+ from the dealer for the star is making my head hurt. I already purchased several from Ebay and although they look exactly the same and are the same size the plastic clips that snap into the grill are in all the wrong places. Help is appreciate.

Has anybody ordered one from Europe in the US? The shipping can't be that expensive to offset a $370 difference....and it would be OEM.

I searched the internet for dealers that sold the illuminated star online. I found a dealer in Washington state that advertised the illuminated star for $180.00 and $45.00 for the wiring harness. I took that price and called my local Mercedes dealer to match the price which they did. I used Vic Viper’s excellent installation instructions with clear photos to install.

Congrats! I had a feeling that star could be had for less. Perhaps you wouldn't mind providing a link to that dealer in Washington state, so others could try price matching with their locals.

do you recommend taking a star to a dealer for install or is third party ok?

jraz 01-05-2019 04:47 AM

I recommend installing it yourself. It is very basic wiring. I used Viper Vic's instructions complete with photos and it took me about 20 minutes if I remember correctly. If your'e not comfortable with doing it yourself, then third party would be fine specially if they are versed in Mercedes products. Like I said, it is pretty simple to install, involving only 2 wires.

Raddy 01-05-2019 10:40 AM

that's great to hear since the dealer was trying to tell me it's a complicated procedure that he highly recommends letting them do it so as not to potentially void my warranty if a third party installer botches it and messes with the electrical. They try and scare you with void warranty threats

Bump

Multiple stars later at 75% OFF the suggested MB retail price, none of which fit. Only led me to having to submit a return request from multiple different sellers because they are unfamiliar with the W213 and the front star fitment and will tell you anything you want to hear to have you buy their product. Does anyone that has the non OEM star installed wish to share a product link?

Thanks

I called 10 different MB dealers in WA state and inquired about the illuminated star, and none of them were anywhere close with the pricing that you mentioned.

I gave in. I paid full retail at the local dealer for the OEM illuminated star and harness. Big thanks to VIC_VIPER for the picture guide. As it was obviously my first time it took a lot longer I must say than the estimated 10-15 minute job from Vic. I had the trouble with getting the fuse box out and also figuring out how to remove the pink connectors. But I finally figured it our myself. The job took just under 2 hours. But now I can get it installed in less than 30 minutes if needed for sure. Also I'm pretty sure Vic has a lot more experience working on MB's since hes a tech. ;)

So I decided to also do a tutorial guide. My local dealer wanted $500 for an installation. I hope I can save some of the forum members money. :wootrock:

I definitely would like to have the star, but the price I believe is just too outrageous. I previously owned a 14 CLA 250 and purchased the star and was also able to install it quite easily.
