Brake judder
I'm in my second e-class 220d w213 with airmatic suspension and every 3-4000 km severe brake judder develops and discs become warped, it's a recurrent problem.
anyone with the same problem. Fernando |
The front discs of my E400 are apparently slightly warped. The dealership tells me that it may be due to the Texas heat and stop-and-go commute.
|
ME : https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...ver-100km.html
Had it fixed under warranty, but seems problem is returning. it's def not the heat; i got my car in august 2017 and temps were around 30c during summer (nothing excessive ) apparently it's the adaptive cruise control...???? |
Discs had been replaced but the problem returned after 2400km. second car with the same problem in 1 year |
Got discs and pads changed on warranty in Sweden after 600km.
And been driving in -20C to +10C so can not be the heat... Will see if the problem will come back. I have got "Ordinary" brakes and not AMG. Is the problem only on ordinary brakes? |

got an appointment for next Monday, 29 jan.
I feel this is going to be a never ending story.. |
I've never had an issue with brakes. I usually get 40-50k miles and change pads and rotors at the same time.
|
Do you use adaptive cruise a lot?
|
As soon as I leave my house I set the cruise control to the speed limit. It stays on about 75% of the time. The car has yet to leave the city so most speeds are between 35 and 50 mph in heavy traffic.
|
they say the adaptive cruise is the culprit, apparently because of all the subtle braking... (?)
I drive 80-90pct of time with cruise and my daily commute includes 10km in the city and 80km on the motorway at speeds of 90-110km discs were changed 2 months ago and problem already returning... |

Original brake rotors still on the car and brakes are smooth as silk. You W213 owners should go to the W212 forum and search "warped brake rotors" as this is not a new issue with MB. Seems they never got it fixed. It is apparent MB changed brake rotor supplier or design after the 2010 some time in 2011 when these brake rotor issues started. |
"they" is people on forum. my dealer doesn't know and just changed the discs as advised by MB
I'm curious to learn what they will do coming Monday... my last car was a w212 and had it for 3 years (2014-2017) without issue |
I updated in the other thread https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...ver-100km.html

Brake Judder
I have had a similar ongoing issue with my 2014 W222..
identified under warranty, it needs new discs every 5/6k miles. Mercedes have now identified its down to the wheel refurb prior to purchasing used from the main dealer. (Mercedes provide a doc to diagnose this - i guess it would be the same and I can tell you how to check for it) Only just identified and even though i advised in warranty the dealer doesn't want to know. On my third set of discs, warn very uneven on one tyre (needed new tyre) - tracking was fine. Bought new discs x 2 pairs, now needs another set, paid for new tyre and tracking - needs a new wheel and discs to fix. |
Brake Judder
I own a W205 C220 AMG line - have been living with awful Judder when braking from 40mph to 30mph for about 5 months. Got so bad the passenger seat started shaking when nobody sat in it.
Just replaced front and rear discs and the issue went away. Lovely job! Until it returned this week. They were only just replaced before Xmas. I drive to work down a duel carriageway and back each day. 6 miles in each direction. Not really braking too often. For the life of me cannot work out what the heck is going on! I have read a lot about uneven pad transfer but am struggling to identify any issue that would cause this! I'm getting the piece of backside waste down to my local mercedes specialist to look over it again. There has to be something wrong somewhere that is causing this. Maybe the calipers not retracting fully. I know it's not hub runout as the garaged checked that! Definately something causing this to happen so soon after replacements cost me close to £700 including labour costs. I would never buy a mercedes after this. 12 years of driving many makes and models, I have never experienced anything like it. |

Interesting! Did they say what the exactly cause was and what it was causing to happen? Don't understand how a refurb would cause warp to vibrate under braking only?
|
No but the wheel doesn't sit flush on the hub I think causing the disc to warp over time. The check is to find the disc high point with the wheel still on then rotate the wheel 90 degrees. If the high point remains its the wheel not the disc.

Just my two cents worth, but your problem may not be warped rotors. If you drive in hot climates or very hilly areas, or if you drive very aggressively, you may be simply melting pad material onto your rotor. It is a common problem that is easily misdiagnosed by dealerships. I have had the same problem on my vette in the past and found that I could simply steel-wool the pad material off of the rotor and the judder went away. Often, you can see the actual outline of the pad on the rotor.
If you get the rotors very hot and then stop, holding the pad in the same spot on the rotor, the pad can leave a melted deposit on that part of the rotor. It doesn't seem like much, but it can be felt in the brake peddle as the typical thump, thump, thump when you apply the brakes. I found that if you continue to creep slowly forward a little (not fully stopping) after a very hard stop you can avoid uneven deposits. Of course this depends on the situation. After spending 30 years in West Texas, melted brake pad material on the rotors became an issue we learned quite a bit about. Runout and cracks can also cause this feeling, but melted pad material is probably the most common. https://www.onallcylinders.com/2017/...yths-debunked/ http://www.fourwheeler.com/how-to/te...ed-rotor-myth/ http://www.stoptech.com/technical-su...nd-other-myths In hopes I am not violating any forum rules, I am adding a link to a article that better explains this. Added a couple more articles. They are interesting reading. |
distronic only uses the brakes to slow down to from someone pulling in front of you...
it does not apply them all the time.. now Lane Keeping uses the crap out of the brakes - applys side toward lane center and can be harsh. but rotors warp because they get hot and then suddenly cool.... like hard braking and then hitting large puddles... or severe overheat which would be sticky caliper or racing. or crappy material - bad batch that does not have consistant properties all around. or surface they mount to is not flat or has something holding them in bind that causes them to slightly warp which only will get worse... |
ive been to a mercedes research center, mercedes is having issues with their brakes. Ive had pads on both my cars changed and now the disk is wrapped.
|
i had my back brakes and front brakes changed by warranty, car has 14k miles, i think the back was done around 6k and front 14k.

How is everyone here getting the rotors changed under warranty? I complained about the issue everytime i took the car but wouldn't acknowledge the problem and had my brakes pads changed when it was below 5k miles and now they are saying that its not covered under warranty. Please let me know its done. Thank you
