Can you close your wagon hatch from the driver's door?

The manual says that you can close the hatch by pressing on the button on the driver's door or open it by pulling on that button. Mine opens from there but doesn't close from that location. Our W211 wagon worked the same way and I always thought it was for safety reasons (you have to be right at the hatchback to make sure it doesn't close on someone). I also cannot get it to close using the key fob (which was the same with out W211 wagon as well) even though the manual says you can. It will open and close by kicking your foot under the bumper, however.

Does your (US) wagon hatch work the same way as mine?

Thanks. Could someone with a US version car chime in?

.
From experience on US S211's no you can't close it with the button, assume it would carry over to the S212 and S213. I've toyed with the idea of swapping out the door button for a sedan's which will have both pull and push functions to open/close to see if that will resolve. There was discussion on the US S211's that it was not allowed to close due to "safety".

I tried the remote, and on a S213, you can close the hatch via the remote, which you couldn't do on an S211.

I dont know, but I wouldnt be surprised if it didnt. The main reason being the presence of the rear suicide seats. Lawyers would have a field day if "Timmy" lost a pinky toe due to the egregious actions of "Swabbian" engineers.

On the 2017 Wagon in Canada you have to hold the driver's side button to close the boot. By comparison the old R-Class you just pressed it and it did its own thing, this one you have to hold until it closes, seems like a waste of time in my view but I am sure there is an army of lawyers and health and safety workers who would beg to differ.

Can someone with a wagon tell me if you open the hatch, does it show on the dash? Like the car graphics that shows open door in red... mine doesn't show open hatch on that graphics... I find that very strange... because there is no sign on the dash that the hatch is open... only when I put the car in R(everse) on the middle screen (360 camera) it shows that the rear hatch is open.

I own a 2018 US spec E400S with wide screen digital instrument display. The wagon hatch opens automatically after a brief tug on the door switch, but to close it you have to hold the switch continuously until it latches. Its a safety measure of sorts since when you let go of the switch the hatch stops moving when its closing. In the instrument display the hatch area of the car icon turns red when its open, just like the doors.
