The fuel tank cover just fell off
I was driving yesterday evening and during one of the turns I heard strange voice coming from the trunk. I thought it might something that moved there but I didn't remembered putting anything there.
When I got home, I found this: https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mbw...edb737a9dc.jpg Last time I was in a gas station was 6 days before so it's not that I have left it open. I know that there no chance that I'll get one as part of the warranty although this not a typical Mercedes incident. |
Have dealer replace panel under warranty, depending on production date part is modified as EPC notes old part must no longer be used.

I noticed my fuel filler flap is acting strange after last trip to the dealership from last recall. Normally I can close the flap even the car is unlocked. Not the flap wont latched in unless I locked the car.
|
Been to the garage today. As expected, they claimed for damage. Had to say goodbye for 420 bucks.
Sad but what can I do? |
I'm surprised they didn't cover this as a warranty item -- especially when it cost over $400 to replace.

Same thing just happened to me. 925 miles on a new 2019 AMG E53.
Filled the gas tank twice since I bought it. We'll see if MB will step up to cover this defect. Clearly parts don't just fall off new vehicles. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mbw...3b0cbb9c3c.jpg |
What the hell? That's totally unacceptable!
|
The same thing just happened to me on my 2019 E53 AMG Coupe. I will contact the dealer today,
|
I don't want to sound dramatic, but honestly, I'm embarrassed reading this!
This is basic car building stuff - there is something fundamentally wrong if bits of the exterior like this are falling off... |
It is easy to do especially when mishandling the cover. The cover is attached with adhesive.

FWIW I've never had an issue with the fuel cover. It is a light weight piece of plastic over a very sturdy metal frame. The only way to make it detach is by very rough handling such as knocking it off with a fuel nozzle.
|
It is a very fragile cover and is light in weight. the cover is held in place with pins. I would say I treat this car like a baby and never had anyone put gas on it besides me. Initially 2 of the pins broke and then follow the rest, I was extra careful after the initial 2 broke.
|
Ya thats one reason I'm not crazy about other people putting gas in my cars. Some of them tend to manhandle things and I've even seen them be putting the gas nozzle in cars and miss the hole for the tank and put the nozzle into the side of the fender.
|
Is the cover easy to remove? I may put some double side tapes or JB plastic weld to secure it.
|
Very easy to remove, I tried holding with double-sided tape until my visit to the dealer this coming Friday.
|
Does the cover hold by clips?
If the cover is easy to remove which means it can come off from the car at anytime. MB should have a service bulletin for this. I assume either the double sided tape or JB plastic weld should be strong enough to keep the cover not to fly off. Just found the video from youtube: Maybe, I should put some hot glue to the slot locations to make them permanent stay. |
