Auto stop/start not working
Noticed on my wife’s 18 E400 Coupe with 4400 miles that the auto stop/start feature is no longer working. Strange, because the light in the center console for it is on. |
Many reasons why it can stop working. On my old E250BT4, it stopped working due to battery failure. Both primary and auxiliary battery had eventually gone bad. This was due to an oil-soaked alternator a year prior, which caused undervolting. Even with a new alternator, the batteries had suffered too much damage. After new batteries, it worked again. The diesel engines are a lot less friendly to auto start/stop. However, my E300W4 seems much happier to start/stop normally, which I would bet is the case with your E400. Have your dealer check the batteries. It took my dealer a good bit of time to finally agree with me that it was the battery. Initial tests showed it wasn't the battery, but some digging finally proved it.

Several conditions must be met for start/stop to activate. I see that you are in SW Florida. Is the A/C running? A/C keeps start/stop from activating in my car.

The system has a lot of variables before it will work like car temp outside temp length of journey battery state etc etc. On my c class the auxiliary battery fail message eventually appeared when the car was 2 yrs old and it was replaced. Ours works a lot less in winter than in summer i presume because some of the temperature parameters are not met.

Is the icon on the instrument cluster yellow or green?

AFAIK US models only show a green icon in the lower right of the display when eco is active. If eco is not active there is no icon displayed.

Turned out to be a weak battery. Battery was replaced under warranty. Surprised as it’s just 1 year old. Works perfect now. |

Glad they found and replaced the battery. Same happened to me on my old E250BT4. Both batteries went bad within a few months. Due to a prior alternator failure a year before. Excellent point on it being a sign of a failure, that's the first thing I thought as well when I encountered the issue.

Stop Start Failure on CLS 350 Shootingbrake (X218)
Recently found that the start stop function was activating less and less on my 2013 CLS 350 Shootingbrake (X218). Light on the switch was green but on the dash it was orange, even after a longish drive. It had become increasingly less frequent to operate. Had a chat with MB dealer and they said most likely the auxiliary battery and the quoted £99 plus fitting. However if I wanted to be sure that it was this battery the then needed to do a diagnostic, for another £90! So I decided to replace the auxiliary battery myself, finally found it in the boot, bought a new online and fitted myself cost, less than £50. However that did not fix it! After a two week holiday the engine was a little slower to turn over, initially no light on the Eco switch and would not switch on. Subsequent starting and the light on the switch was on and the dash showed orange. I was convinced that the main battery was failing. Found the battery under the bonnet, fitting looked tricky, as there is very little space. Purchased a new battery from Halfords and got them to fit. However all the internet sites said I needed an AGM 019 battery, however this didn't fit, it was too long! They then fitted a AGM 115, same spec but not so long And about £40 cheaper! Start stop now works perfectly
