It depends where you live. Unfortunately people target homes where I live. In neighborhoods by me, there are dozens of cars on driveways and teenagers used to find open car doors and steal things from them. I wouldnt be naive just because the area is safe, if you are leaving for a few days as the OP mentioned, wouldnt you lock up before you left?

I have full security in my house including intrusion alarms and day/night video. The county I live in has a very high rate of auto thefts.
Pinellas County, Florida has a teen auto theft problem that has been called an “epidemic.” While Pinellas has led the nation in number of juvenile auto theft arrests – outpacing larger counties like Los Angeles, California – the problem also is on the increase throughout Florida.

The last time I left by plane I just left my car on the airport and forgot to take the key with me (it was in the passenger seat), the car was of course untouched 3 days later.
There are 2300 people living in town, we got like 40km of road.

Unknown, but lock sales went up afterwards. If you read the wiki, the theory was that he sweet talked his way in, but I remember people talking about it a few decades ago how it was common at the time to leave the doors unlocked and afterwards people started locking their doors. Regardless, he's not the first serial killer to enter an unlocked home.
