So basically the front will look almost the same as the CLS / A Class and new GLE. I think a bit more headlight variation between models would be better.
The current CLS and new CLA will look almost identical!

Going the way of the CLS look thank you for posting it. ...:zoom:

Is that the S Class steering wheel?

superangrypenguin 01-22-2019 08:59 PM

So once it hits the US the new I6 engine with 48V mild hybrid will probably be launched at the same time.

Bye bye only gas powered cars. What a sad year. :(

Yes, the Carscoops article mentioned that it's the same steering wheel that they've been seeing on the prototypes of the next-gen S-class.

I am a HUGE seller of the touchpad and removal of the Comand wheel...especially since I'm left handed! Further, I don't feel navigation is as intuitive dragging a finger than rotating the wheel. One need only compare the two options on the existing E classes with the touchpad AND the wheel.

Sorry, rant over.

haibieb 01-23-2019 10:32 AM

Not a radical departure from present interior layout….I guess if it works, leave it alone….I for one, not a big fan of the controller pad. These German manufacturers like to compete with each other as to see who has bigger…….than the other. Keep it simple in its design and they should not forget the average age category of buyers. I remember working as a quality control staff at our local MB dealership and hearing from the various E and S owners how complicated the systems were. Even some of our technicians had challenges in their hands. :zoom:

Thank God the center MENU button is still there, couldn't live without it. How would I quickly get to my scent and ionization menu?

(Read tremendous sarcasm)

LOL........Perhaps the dumbest button in our cars. Even if you have the Air Balance system.

I'm surprised none of you noticed the keyboard and computer monitor. That's a $200 option in case you want to surf the net while driving.

:D

It's actually the wife/partner replacement option for passengers, it's a new technology MB is trying out. The new concept is that the laptop actually listens, and when not asked for information, shut's up. Even though it's connected to the internet, it's still not as accurate as a wife in giving answers though, due to the fact that wives are always right. In 2021 there will be an option for laptops with boobs so nobody notices it's a laptop.

I'd gladly pay for it, if it never said these words I'm betting every single member has heard before........'WHAT DID I JUST SAY?" And it doesn't have to be a wife saying those words. Trust me. I know of what I'm speaking!

Abohunu 01-24-2019 09:21 PM

Current E class have 2 led strips, so I was expecting to be similar to the new GLE headlights, but ... in the spyshots, there is no room for the 2nd led strip. Not good, now E class will be similar to the A class (or CLS too..)

Any guess when this will be announced/launched? I was planning to order a 2020 later this year.

rbrylaw 01-26-2019 09:23 PM

From the stage of the Mule pictures, it could be announced this summer for a Fall launch, but that would be a guess as only Mercedes knows and we mere mortals aren't privy to the inner sanctum.

DFW_Neal 01-26-2019 09:30 PM

Ain’t that the truth! I’ve been trying to work it out based on the Auto Shows. I was thinking they might launch later this year at Frankfurt or LA auto show and then order in 2020 for 2021. Sure would love to order this year as 2020 with the facelif, but that would mean announce Mar in Geneva or April in NY. But like you said, hard to know. They

OW22 01-27-2019 08:36 AM

I would guess for it to be launched at some stage before October 2020, it would have to be launched for the Geneva show in March. If it's announced at Frankfurt in Spetember then it will be available in March 2020. It looks like a Frankfurt launch is most likely so could be January 2020 on sale?

My thinking exactly. So we’ll know in March.

If I wanted to buy a CLS for it's styling, I would have. Now it seems you won't have a choice. Not a fan of the new front end, and not a fan of touchscreen and losing the rotary knob. I'm so glad I bought MY 2019 and didn't hold out for the 2020 model.

DFW_Neal 01-27-2019 10:57 AM

Mercedes does like to duplicate styling across their models for sure. I have 2015 S550 with touchpad and rotary knob. I only use the touchpad about 10% of the time - mostly for swiping to the next song. But I suspect the new, bigger touchpad will work better with the new interface. At least I hope so.

One thing that puts me off the modern Audi and BMWs is they both have designers obsessed with hard-edged geometric shapes. Someone in BMW is obsessed with hexagons and they're making the grills way too big. The new X5 and 7 Series have ludicrously big kidney grills which make them look like buck toothed yokels. Someone is Audi is also obsessed with hard edges shapes as the dash outline resembles the grill and there are hard edges everywhere. The issue with that is that they don't age well, hard edge shapes can look very old very quickly. A more rounded car keeps its looks for a long time. Compare the Chris Bangle E60 to the preceding E39. The Bangle designs look awful today, the Dame Edna headlights and the weird lines. Whereas the E39 still looks a classic imho, it's neat and tidy and still a handsome car. Which is what the F10 5 Series went back to the E39 look and that car still looks good to this day, the current 5er, the G30 has gone for more hard-edge lines and looks a bit boxy compared to the more rounded F10.

Look closely at the pic of the front end and you'll see the second LED strip barely peeking through in the middle of the headlamp.

If you search the internet about the facelift there are pictures of the facelift prototypes with less disguise where there is no second stripe. The new headlights seem to be very similar to the ones of the CLS.
