New 2020 Mercedes E class interior... Yea or nay?

It seems to have a smaller steering wheel hub and has totally eliminated the COMMAND knob in favor of the touch pad. Of course, it will probably have the MBUX touch system (the touch I'm not crazy about, but the improved voice commands are welcomed). What do you guys think?

MBUX might be a nice upgrade, but personally i prefer the current new steering wheel. Otherwise it looks the same.

Loss of rotary COMMAND knob is a big step backwards; its much easier to use than a touch pad while driving. 1st thing I did on delivery (suggested by MB specialist when I picked up car in Germany) was to disable the touch pad. Enhanced audio commands might compensate, but I'd keep the rotary switch and dump the touch pad. In every car I've driven these were harder to manipulate, even with haptic feed back.

First of all, that's a mule, so it's not the finished 2020 E Class. I highly doubt that will be the steering wheel in production cars. Secondly, it looks much like the current E Class. It will have MBUX for sure, which I could care less about as I have no desire to have a touch screen in my car. I guess the trackpad will be finel, but the rotary Comand dial is awfully convenient, so I'd likely miss it.

Personally, I prefer the rotary dial as well. But I suppose at some point you have to fish or cut bait about how many input systems you'll have in a car. This solution is sleeker too.
I would have liked to have heard the deliberations on which input system will stay and what has to go.

Otherwise, looks pretty much the same.

Mule = Test Car, one with many of the bits and pieces that will go into production, but not complete or ready for prime time. That steering wheel, for example, will not very likely be the wheel in the production car when released.

Got it! I sort of read that into the context but had never seen the term used before.

I'm not seeing the benefits of Touchscreens in these cars if that aspect of MBUX is going to be brought over as well. I went for the 2019 E200d with Comand Online partly because I did not want a touchscreen. I was looking at the new Audi A6/A7 and BMW 5 Series. The Audis especially would drive me mad, I saw many reviews on Youtube where the reviewers had to bring cloths with them to wipe down the screens as they would get filthy after use with fingerprints. And it's downright dangerous to be looking down to try and touch your way through menus etc.

Mercedes is the last of the German cars to offer a touchscreen and MBUX is perhaps the true first of the German cars to include a real personal assistant. They have to stay competitive or lose customers. The younger folk, who grew up in the age of iPhone and iPad and Windows 10 touch screen computers have never been without touch screens and they demand the same functionality in their cars. I'm certainly fond of my iPhone and iPad, but I grew up before cell phones existed, believing hand held communication devices were a Star Trek fantasy. Got to say that Gene Roddenberry was ahead of technology. Star Trek had cell phones and iPad in 1966, when the series debuted. And I'm old enough the remember watching the very first Star Trek episode aired on television in 1966. Times change and so too must Mercedes.

I think people are going to complain with this touch screen, just like they did in my Cadillac forum. It's not just the fingerprint issue. that will drive you mad ( I swear I spent half my time in that car wiping the prints off), but it's downright dangerous to use as well. You'll see that your eyes will be off the road quite a bit, fiddling around with it.

The COMMAND knob in my opinion is a big loss. So much easier to just rotate and maneuver up/down/ side to side then trying to do that on a touch pad. When you get used to the rotary, it almost becomes second nature.

As.for the steering wheel, it is identical to the one proposed for the S class with it's thinner spokes and smaller rounder hub. It's been covered up in almost every interior leak until now. I think it stands a good chance of being on the final production car in one form or another. Personally, not crazy about. it.

I like the lower profile mouse pad, the current one sticks up too much. With a touch screen probably don't need the rotary dial.

I have the touch screen in my wife's Ford Edge Sport: no rotary knob. I hate it.

In my 2019 E450 I have disabled the touch pad: I hate it. I love the rotary knob which I can use without taking my eyes off the road.

A touch screen hanging in front of the dash is a major reason I did not buy a BMW 540ix.

touchscreens suck. They're dangerous on the move.
I thought thats why they invented things like Head Up Display to keep your hands on the wheel and not everywhere else in the cabin.

Cost. It's that simple.

As the facelift glc will have mbux is it safe to assume the w213 fl next year also will have it?

It seems to be coming. The interior spy shots show the track pad. From a business perspective, the E class is bread and butter for Mercedes so I can’t imagine them waiting for next gen in 4 years. So I think it’s a safe bet.

Ok, I am a HUGE fan of touch screen. Wife too! When I went and looked at the 2020 GLE and its new system I was blown away and loved it. The touch screen part was just great and easy to use. Just my opinion.
So I have a question...... I currently have a 19' E63s on order (April build with May deilvery which will be my wife's DD) and that center control on the above pictured E class does look like the new MBUX system in the GLE. With everyone discussing this new interior and facelift, are these rumors that the 2020 E will have the new MBUX or facts?

If facts, I'm cancelling my order to get a 2020.

Touchscreens in cars is not the way to go.
Dangerous
They get dirty
force you to sit closer to steering wheel then safety dictates.

Keep the wheel - spend time improving it.
My ipad andphone screen are nasty and you cannot keep up keeping them clean.

I MISS BUTTONS that you can feel switch... Dayum Steve Jobs and his hatred for buttons...arggggggggggggggggg

I agree, I hate not having hard buttons too, but could care less about the dirty finger prints. I think MB's might be a ltitle better because the dash will have a little bit of an above over hang and hopefully keep the sunlight from showing so many smudges unlike my crappy BMW. And for the MBUX update, supposedly the GLC is getting it but is the GLC a facelift or a new model? I thought it was just a face lift which could increase the likelihood of the E getting it during the facelift.
