Just got back from a nearly 1500 mile round trip to France. Car fully laden and very heavy going out 52.3mpg and coming back was towing large trailer 48.7mpg. This is in my 2019 E220 Estate (Wagon).

Very nice. I wish I could get 1/2 of that mileage in my E300. I'm averaging 18± mpg.

Wow - that’s even better at over 54mpg. 👍🏼👍🏼

My trips were a combination of motorways and country roads.

Don’t worry too much - I think US mpg is slightly different to UK? 1mpg UK = 0.83mpg US so at 18 you are approx 21.6 UK mpg

How do you drive that car, Sport mode? I drive in Comfort mode and consistently get 28 to 29 mpg, 75% highway, 25% traffic.

I'm usually in comfort mode (sometimes eco mode). It is all town driving in 3rd or 4th gear with some traffic. Speed limits vary from 15 mph to 30 mph with an occasional 35 mph.

In Eco mode, I'm averaging around 32 MPG and in comfort mode, about 29MPG. I'm really amazed for the size and power of the E450 CAB I can average these results. On a bad stop and go day, drops to about 25-26....still not bad!

Ditto. A 2750 mile round trip with four adults from the UK to the bottom of France and back in the summer yielded 55 MPG in my E220d. It might not be as exciting as the V6 and V8 versions, but the combination of frugality, size and *reasonable* performance is shockingly good in this car.

Those are great figures you're getting out of the diesels.

On a seperate note, for the chaps from the UK, how did you get your cars across the channel?

I want to do a trip myself but am concerned about getting the car over....

2018 S560 and 2019 E450 Wagon.
I use to have a VW Diesel Golf Wagon, I regularly got around 50 mpg out of that. The problem in the States now is diesel is so darn expensive it would take a lot of the savings away. I get around 29 highway with my wagon and plenty of power 362 hp out of the gas V6 so am very happy with that. Gas here in FLA is around 2.17 per gallon and diesel is generally over 3 dollars per gallon.

Easy as pie! On the train, through the tunnel (www.eurotunnel.com). Takes about 40 minutes.

I usually go on the ferry (90 mins) as I have quite a long drive to the port and can get some rest on the boat. Quite a bit cheaper too. With a ‘Season Ticket’ crossings are about £40.

Oh wow.

I didn't know you could put it on the train. better yet, that you can stay with the car to look after it

I'm waiting for the weather to brighten up, and to see how travel might be affected by brexit, then I'm off on a trip!

interesting. In E mode on the highway with no stops the best I have ever made in my E450 Cab is 29mpg. I wonder how yours is squeezing that extra 3mpg out. Is yours 4matic?

No, it is not. I'm sure I gain a few MPG not having it. I find using Distronic adds to the mileage gains as well.

mine is a 4matic. Maybe that’s a bit of the discrepancy. I use Distronic all the time on the highway. Still a bit of puckering sometimes when traffic slows or stops abruptly, but I’m beginning to trust, more and more, that it’s not going to slam me into the back of someone!

I do know you lose a few MPG with the all wheel drives. That distronic is a remarkable system. I know what you mean by sweating it out and trusting it to stop. I too still have my foot near the brake just in case; what amazes me more is it's breaking on sharp curves. We have what is known as "dead man's curve" here in Cleveland, and it handles and brakes in this wicked curve perfectly!

Yeah, the 4matics are heavier cars so it absolutely makes sense that fuel consumption would take a hit.

So where exactly is this "dead man's curve"? My wife has family in Solon near Cleveland and we might be paying them a visit. I might want to check out this dreaded curve myself!

Dead Man’s Curve is one of those Cleveland landmarks that was never intended to be a landmark. The near 90-degree curve is where I-90 takes a hard left where it splits off with Ohio Route 2 westbound, or with a hard right for drivers going eastbound. Near downtown Cleveland it is where The Cleveland Memorial Shoreway connects to the innerbelt freeway at a modified trumpet interchange, just south of Burke Lakefront Airport. It's famous as one of the most notorious curves.

What? That's a normal highway in NYC!

Check out our dead man curves on the Bruckner approaching to the elevated portion (I-287). It causes chaos every morning.

Also, check out our awesome signs!

What I didn't show ya was the curve itself...it's almost a full 90 degree turn, that isn't very gradual. Every town has it's version, but this one has claim an inordinate amount of accidents from cars and trucks not able to handle it....

We do have plenty of signs to warn you though.
