Ok so here’s a weird exhaust issue with my E450 wagon.

I noticed today when I was trying out the remote start there is only exhaust coming out of the passenger side tailpipe? No check engine light yet. On my other car the 2019 e450 cabriolet the exhaust comes out equally through both sides. I’m thinking I better get the wagon to the dealer soon before I get a check engine light. I’m pretty sure there are two catalytic converters on these cars and all I can think of is the drivers side converter is plugged. I notice too the cabriolet is substantially louder. Could one of you guys who has a wagon or sedan feel both exhaust sides and verify warm air is coming out both sides. On my wagon it feels like double flow is coming out the passenger side. The cabrio is free flowing both sides and not as warm either as the wagon. Don’t ask me why but the strangest things always happen to me. First the app. Now that I got squared away this.

On my sedan the bumper outlets are fake. There is an air break between the actual exhaust pipe and the outlet through the bumper. The sales brochure listed "simulated" dual exhaust. Check the pipes behind the bumper for the real exhaust.

I put my hand under the bumper and felt the actual pipe on the drivers side. Nada. Dealers checking it out tomorrow. Just leaving the dealer now with the cabriolet. Had a nail in the tire.

Lots of cars only blow out of one exhaust when starting up. There maybe a flap system to direct the flow to one exhaust until ready.

I left it running 20 minutes or so for that reason and the cabriolet I have with the same power train blew out both sides even right after start up.

Holy cr@p dude!!!!

Dont buy a lottery ticket right now!

Lots of nails around the roads in Southwest Fla, everywhere you look they are building houses. Glad they were able to repair it rather than a new tire, either way it would have been covered by insurance.

Whoa. Noticed the same thing on my 2019 E450 Wagon this weekend. Remote started the car and when I walked outside, I only saw exhaust coming from the the right tailpipe, same as you.

2012 merc amg 02-25-2019 11:10 PM

Very odd. Maybe it is a fake dual exhaust ? The exhaust on my Cabriolet sounds a lot better too. Maybe I should get Cabriolet exhaust parts and put them on my Wagon lol.

mercedes.fan 02-26-2019 05:39 AM

Try revving the engine, maybe it then comes out from both. Might only come out of one to run the catalytic converter more efficient

I was reading on the bmw forums they have a flap in the exhaust that activate. Today I’m gonna check it in sport plus mode. I notice the car gets louder. I’ll bet then I’ll feel the exhaust coming out both sides.

Bruizer 02-26-2019 10:57 AM

There is a valve on the exhaust pipe on the drivers side. I don’t know what criteria opens the valve , but I think Sport or Sport+ opens it. Take a look under the car behind the rear tire. You should be able to see the solenoid.

I'll try to remember to investigate this later after work. Then again, sometimes I'm just itching to drive home and will probably forget. Eager to read forum feedback.

Yep in sport plus mode when I activate it I can hear the soliniod kick the flap in the exhaust Nd then I feel equal amounts of exhaust coming out both pipes. In sport mode it’s the same as comfort and eco mode and just feel exhaust flow on the passenger side. No idea what happens as the car Revs. I would think that flap might open in every mode. I think I will sue Mercedes. I’m not getting a true dual exhaust. False advertising. Lol. I’d prefer just to have the soliniod in the open position all the time so I’m getting full flow. Might investigate that one.

nycebo 02-26-2019 11:00 PM

I confirm the experience noted above. Weird.

2012 merc amg 02-26-2019 11:35 PM

Whats strange though is on my Cabriolet with the same engine and trans the Exhaust comes out both sides all the time.

mercedes.fan 02-27-2019 03:38 AM

Maybe in the cab lower noise is not the same priority so it runs dual. But in low revs it probably doesnt make any difference if it runs on one pipe

Too much construction! Downtown Venice is still not put back together 100% yet. I had to replace 2 tires on my CLK Cabriolet lat year.

The reason for the flaps is both noise control, but also efficiency of the engine at it's various speeds (and in it's various modes- what it's expecting to happen). A narrower exhaust path (designed well- will help "suck" the exhaust out of the engine. The design of the exhaust paths is a true science and artform for fluid dynamic engineers. And across many RPM's becomes quite complex. The flaps help control the speed of the exhaust gases. That velocity creating the "suck" by using bernoulli principles thru the design of the exhaust system as the gases cool and condense as well. Many cars have the flaps closed at lower speed Ito increase gas velocity at low flows) but indeed have "true dual exhaust." When you see the one super shiny pipe on a BMW x whatever (their valves seem unusually close to the end of the pipe and unusually shiny too, so I find them easy to notice on the roads) its not a sign of a fake exhaust as much as someone who doesn't stomp on the gas very often, if ever.

Some tuners in the VW/Honda type communities disable the flaps, but that's all about sound production, not engine performance or efficiency. On a Merc I think leaving the flaps alone and letting the designers do their thing is the proper choice.

Remote started the wagon today and noticed exhaust came out both sides then shut it off and restarted it regularly and exhaust only came out the right side. Strange. I guess I have too much time on my hands lol.

rustybear3 03-12-2019 07:10 PM

As you know, I have a CAB as well. I can confirm that in any mode, exhaust comes out of both tailpipes.

2012 merc amg 03-12-2019 07:26 PM

Yep in my cab every mode both pipes. In the wagon comfort eco and sport modes right pipe only. Sports plus and remote start with the wagon both pipes.

nycebo 03-13-2019 10:49 PM

How do you get it to start in sport plus? I thought it defaults back to comfort or eco.

2012 merc amg 03-13-2019 11:05 PM

You can start it in sport plus. Just hit the start button till all the dash lights come on with no brake pedal and then flip the mode selector switch to sports plus push the brake pedal down and hit the start button again. I do this a lot as I like the cold stsrt sound with the exhaust flaps open. I use to do it with my amg too and hit the exhaust open button before a cold start. On another subject I’m on a trip up north now with the cabriolet first real long drive and the cabriolet is much smoother than the wagon which is crazy as the cab has the amg line which should be stiffer than the wagons luxury package The cab is a joy to drive the wagon a little more stiff and more tire vibration. The wagon has the Goodyear sport tires and the cab the Michelin I wonder if that could be some of the difference. I’m going to complain about the wagon at the 10k mile service. The vibration on the highway although slight bothers me. It’s always done it from day 1. Could the Michelin primacy run flats be that much better than the good year run flats or maybe I have a bad tire or bent rim?
